    The best comparison I've seen is that FLCL is similar to a music video. It can be something you can analyze if you want to pick it apart, but if not, it's still something entertaining and fun you can watch.

      Have yet to see the series but that sounds like a perfect description for movies/shows similar to FLCL in the sense that they’re made to entertain. Too many critics nowadays pick apart film too much imo, movies that pose a boring watch get too much praise for simply being “intellectual” or “artistic” which while they can be good to watch often times aren’t because that’s all they present.

    I remember watching “Firestarter,” the second episode of FLCL, back in middle school (I wasn’t allowed to watch Adult Swim back then so I sneaked into my parents room to watch while they were gone on a trip) and I just remember being in awe at what I saw. I had watched anime before but I didn’t understand that anime could look or be written in the way FLCL was. Up until that point I thought anime could only ever be like DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, CardCaptors, and Sailor Moon. It changed my outlook on anime and it remains my favorite anime to this day.

    • @Atomsk88

      NessTheAlien Same. I ended up watching the series twice when it first aired on Adult Swim because I missed FLClimax. So come Tuesday night and it's the first episode again, 14 year-old me was massively confused. Kids back then were use to seasoned series, like you said. It was for the best though because it is still my personal favorite to this day. I hope the new seasons will add to it greatly.

      NessTheAlien Had pretty much the same experience. I marathoned the whole show because this was back when Adult Swim did that Burger King contest and the winner chose a whole lineup of great anime beginning with FLCL in its entirety leading into Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Lupin III. That was a pretty amazing night for young me.

    You killed it, FLCL exudes the idea that you shouldn't be so serious, and should instead be more sincere. People who are hating/scrutinizing the New seasons of FLCL don't seem to be remembering / getting a big message in the original.

      @minato458remington3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Your Mom I can't entirely disagree with you, but at the same time I definitely saw a very well thought out attempt to recreate the level of structured chaos that the original FLCL had. They have done a great job so far from what I've seen of the new seasons, to expect things to be just like they where in the original is in a way an unrealistic expectation, the original FLCL was an experimental anime done with the new animation tech they had at the time, all these aspects add up to create something you can't really duplicate purposefully.

    • @lucak_art
      @lucak_art 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      the thing is that,. why even name it the same just to get credit? Its obviously not supposed to be like the old fooly cooly so I don't see a point in sayint it's fooly cooly, it can even turn out to be a heck of a good show, most of the team seems solid with new talent even, but the original fooly cooly is over and it never needed a continuation, so it's sort of betraying the flcl identity and branding, what if it turns out bad? you will recommend someone flcl but tell them "ignore the other seasons they are crap" They can and should keep experimenting all they want but using the same name just for marketing sake or whatever isnt a very good practice, right now I will just keep my expectations on medium.

    • @minato458remington3
      @minato458remington3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Lucak Arts I feel your concerns trust me, for instance I've been a huge fan of the dark tower series, and when the movie finally came out I hated pretty much every minute of it because the books are so much better and they didn't do the story real justice, I felt like they should have just made it an entirely new movie and not called it the dark tower, but after finishing the movie and realizing I spent the entire time hating on it because the books(original content) where so much better that I didn't even give it a chance to really show me what it had and was only looking for what I knew I should be seeing.
      Now take the new seasons of FLCL and you have a very similar case. I honestly have grown out of the idea that we should get new seasons of great anime when they've ended already, after seeing so many new seasons just no do the series real justice. However when they do get more content I almost always watch it and take some sort of enjoyment from it, so it's important to not be so serious and allow the creators the freedom of expanding on the universe, in the end if you feel the content wasn't up to par with the original content and that makes you really upset I get you, but that doesn't mean you should let it ruin the potential of the new content they've given you, you gotta take the good with the bad and in this particular case I can really feel the passion of the people working on the new seasons of FLCL, they want to do it justice and if some things are off I hope we can still enjoy the content and not let trivial details to rule our experiences, we as the viewers have to leave the creators room to grow and such also if there is going to be a continuation of content.

    I had one of those moments...
    When I was about.. sixteen, I think, and I was watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time, in it's initial US broadcast run in 1998. I remember watching the first episode and really liking it. The characters were fun, the action was interesting, the music was fantastic. I just really liked the show.
    And then episode 5, Ballad of the Fallen Angels happened...
    There was that moment, when Spike is walking to the church, specifically NOT to rescue Faye, but to confront Vicious and be certain he's still alive. It's about a full minute and a half of nothing but Spike walking in the open door, with the camera panning from one gorgeous shot to another, while that rendition of "In the Rain" plays in the background. There's no action, no dialogue, and nothing but the foley effects his footsteps set to the song.
    I distinctly remember thinking that nothing I ever see will ever be as amazing as this moment, right here.

    The show is confusing, wild, and deep. But it's also about puberty. Puberty is confusing, wild, and deep. Even if the whole thing flies over your head you can still enjoy the show. And even if you don't grow into the super adult you thought you would, you can still be a cool one. Like Haruko says in the very first episode of the new season "BORN TO BE MILD!!!"

    Man, I remember when I was 15yo downloading this series in a slowass internet and being blown away (I'm 31 now).
    Just to drive home what you said in your video, being in a unique position of being able to talk about this anime a little more than 15 years later I can say this: I remember VERY LITTLE of the overall plot. But the visuals? For me Evangelion (another anime I watched when I was in my early teens, which I remember MOST of the plot ironically enough) and FLCL are the benchmark for visuals (especially during action scenes) against all other anime are measure against.
    Also... the soundtrack is unnaturally good. Hearing Blue Drive Monster filled me with such nostalgia that its difficult to explain.

    This was a lesson that was most profoundly hammered into me by 2012's Cabin in the Woods by Joss Whedon. In watching the film there is a point in the 3rd act at which I actually yelled out in excitement and CLAPPED in reaction to what I had just witnessed on screen (which is something I simply never do, I generally HATE when people make noise during a showing). I walked out of the theater and in discussing it I realized how little the main plot made any sense yet I was struck with a single thought: "Why did I enjoy it so much then??" The movie started to fall apart the moment I began to critically analyze it. In retrospect, what I had born witness to was a perfectly executed balancing act between willing suspension of disbelief and disillusionment.
    Watching the movie again does not elicit the same response yet I have never forgotten the feeling of overwhelming emotion overtaking me in that moment in the theater.

      Same thing happened to the theater showing Godzilla (2014). Despite the various flaws the film has, it's the only time I've seen (and participated in) a standing ovation from an entire theater after a film's end.

    My mom recently passed away. I had known this was her favorite anime for a while. I just never got around to watching it, so I finally sat down and watched it when I was done I felt sad because to me the show didn’t really have an ending. (I tried to look at the other shows but I’m pretty sure they’re all prequel’s.) so I just went online to find the first explanation video. I could to try and get some closure to the ending and luckily I found yours first Thank you for making this it’s very well-made and has helped me.

    Me and my boyfriend just finished rewatching it in preparation for the new seasons airing on Toonami. We had both seen it when it first aired on tv back in '03-'04, right as we were leaving middleschool for highschool. He hadn't seen it since then, I'd catch it on occassion when it'd re-air a couple of times after but even that felt so long ago. Still we were fans of the show. This time around we still enjoyed it just as much as before but we didn't see it as a random mess as before. Maybe it's because we were only 13-14yrs old when we first saw it and maybe all the randomness kind of hit closer to home for us at that time in our lives to see it from afar, but now at 29yrs it all made much more sense to us. It's still kind of random, but we see all the symbolisms clearer now, and the messages the story was conveying, that with all the wild and crazy things that are out of our control, especially as adolescences experience it, we just try to go on and live life doing the best that we can not knowing if it's right or wrong, which I dont think i got the first time i watched it back then but the story and soundtrack would stick with me from my first step into highschool until my last.

    FLCL was (and still very much is) one of my favorite anime of all time, it's in my personal top 10, and as many times as I've watched it, to this day I can only scarcely tell any of my friends what it's about. It's something that has to be experienced by a person in the 6 episodes. The characters, the music, the emotions, it's so brilliantly confusing and I've loved it through today! And with the premiere of FLCL: Progressive, I had to sit and watch this one again! Glad to see you talking about it, great stuff.

    When I saw flcl as a child, I fell in love with anime. It was fast and quirky, but I always felt like it had some sort of depth, whether intentionally there or not, and there was something very melancholic and real about it. It was surreal, but relatable. As a kid, I had this feeling that flcl was showing me what I would come to experience as I grew up. In such a short time, the show managed to convey relationships between characters that were short and sweet on screen, but clearly and successfully led the viewer to infer about the complexities behind them. I'll always love this show.

    Good shit man. Thanks for exploring this aspect of the show more deeply. One of the main reasons I love FLCL so much is precisely because it is the perfect marriage of spectacular, dumb fun and thoughtful reflection. And like you said the reflection is there if you want it but it doesn't impose itself on the viewer because things move so quickly and chaotically. Wish I knew more on just how Gainax was able to pull that off. Such a balance is incredibly difficult to strike. Maybe a future video? :D

      Adhec Rodriguez It's has nothing to do with getting or understanding the series. It's a time and place piece that most people, even younger people now will probably not have the same experience as those who watched it as it aired in 2003.

    • @camilobogado3331
      @camilobogado3331 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Adhec Rodriguez it definitely falls on the "right place and right time" to really apreciate FLCL. It really was a product of its time, catching references from all pop culture from the end of the millenium. The bullet time scene, for example, feels so dated today, but back then it was really a novelty.
      Even little things like the coloring of the frames. The use of digital painting is the norm today, but FLCL was really Innovative on that regard.
      It also threw a wrench at the over-thinking anime that was everywhere after Evangelion, showing that you can make a show about fun and forget all the deep stuff.
      So yeah, you "had to be there" to profoundly feel what FLCL is.

    I love this take on FLCL. I feel like this 'analysis' really stands true to all of what FLCL is. Taking my own experience w/ the two Gianax stables you mentioned it makes perfect sense. I spent actual years delving deep into Eva. While FLCL I watched over the course of a week, enjoyed it, maybe I learned something maybe I didn't. But I have no need to keep going with it. Yet a few months later when I bought it without hesitation because I knew I'd definitively want to watch it again.
    It was dumb fun, I didn't get. But as you said there was one scene that made it all so important. For me the scene between mamimi and canti struck such a cord. If you ask me what it means I won't be able to tell you. But it is still very important to me.
