Great opening episode to a great season. I love every episode, even the couple which feel like returning elements of what we've seen before. Some nice cameos in those one, Clare Grogan (the OG Kochanski), Anita Dobson (Big soap star here in UK & of course tuned up in The Church on Ruby Road) & Jenny Agutter (actress who started when a child, The Railway Children, & went on to lots of other good stuff including American Werewolf in London).
Series 6 has probably the best episode of RD, episode 3! In fact, it won an international Emmy, which is amazing because the BBC said, "no you're not making it", so they did anyway.
Actually Janet Street Porter who was in charge of BBC 2 at the time told them in her usual friendly charming way the episode was far too ambitious and there was no way they could shoot it in the time they'd planned. When you first decided to watch Red Dwarf, could you have imagined how much you would love it? A British sci-fi sitcom with actors you’d never heard of.
One of the best parts of owning the DVDs of the series was the cast commentary. Hearing them razz Robert Llewellyn for never remembering his lines or needing other cast members to hold up sheets of paper with his lines on them, hearing Craig Charles talk about scenes like the bug kissing in Psirens or the head pop in Justice, or the other cast members alternately praising and being annoyed with Charles' ability to read the script once and have it memorized. After watching the series so many times, it was great to watch it again with their reactions and commentary.
Fun fact for this episode: Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music provided the guitar playing for Psiren Lister by standing behind Craig Charles and sticking his arms through his armpits to play it. So I guess in his mind, Lister is as good as the guitar player from Roxy Music
Remember how Camille inverted the trope by being totally chill instead of playing it the usual way? Well, say hello to playing it the usual way, care of The Psirens. Nice to see you reboot your background in alignment with an aesthetic reboot for the show. Since the show was coming back from hiatus/the failed attempt to launch a US and/or movie version, this is by design a new "first episode" and the second best onboard point for a new fan after the literal first episode. Holly, and Red Dwarf itself, disappear in the overhaul, and the "Boys From The Dwarf" era begins. There's more signature recurring gags from here on out (including but not limited to the "Space Corps Directives") and more Star Trek TNG parallels as they're forced to explore (scavenge) like never before. All time top 10 episode for me. It's always one of my favorite gags when the crew stumbles into accidentally saving the day through their flaws. As such, catching the psiren out because it's too good at guitar is a top Red Dwarf moment. And yes, that was THE Jenny Agutter as Dr. Mamet.
Don't forget, they blew their only prop of Red Dwarf in the last series. As for Holly, they kind of shot themselves in the foot when Kryten joined as he basically did the same job as Holly plus the physical humour.

The final series with both writers, after series six they had a huge fallout and split. Only one of them continued to write red dwarf and it went on hiatus for about 4 years before returning in 1997 for series 7
Season 6, for me, might be peak Dwarf. It was the sweet spot where the cast was very comfortable in their roles... the writing was still great and the effects and production design was much improved from when the show began.

That episode felt a lot longer than it actually was, they really knew how to keep the flow going. I thought for sure it was going to end after the guitar playing test, so good.
The split between Rob and Doug is subject to a lot of speculation, hyperbole, and often both writers contradicting themselves. However, I do get the impression that Rob was wanting to move on and do his own thing.
The reason for Series 6 being set on Starbug: Prior to the scripts of Series VI being written the model of Red Dwarf had fallen off a shelf and had broken which gave Rob Grant and Doug Naylor the idea to have the guys in Starbug searching for it.
First one I've seen where you're in the same room. 😀 I did enjoy hearing a Scheiße. S6 is decent, and production-wise (if people want that from Red Dwarf) it's the best the show ever looks. But I'm amazed so many people regard this as a "peak" of the show. I guess it is if you like gags about Kryten's head and Space Corps directives as - spoiler - there's about 50,000 of them to come. It's very much "gag per line" instead of characterisation, which gets wearying. Grant-Naylor would never have stooped to a "I didn't know they had a duty free shop" gag in their prime, and while most of S6 just about gets away with it, you can see the wheels coming off, sadly. If it was a peak of Red Dwarf, Rob Grant wouldn't have cleared off after it was over.
season 6 is without a doubt the best season in my opinion, every episode is just amazing (although season 7 ep 1 is my all time favourite episode of the show).
Well...sharks can smell blood from miles away through water, when the smell molecules can't possibly be making it to their nose. Gotta be some quantum entanglement thing going on. Whatever particle magic is going on with sharks, that's what Cat has.

It's interesting to me that they spent more time reintroducing us to the characters and their personality traits than they did explaining what happened between series! Like they're more concerned about new viewers than returning fans.
Together again in person!! This season has some of the best episodes and is also the beginning of the downfall (if comes back) and Paula guessed right about being stuck on Starbug ages ago. The small seasons are condensed for you, for us at the time is was sometimes years and years and years between them

6:35 "Like an episode of Star Trek" - one of the derelicts in the field is in fact a model of a Klingon Vor'Cha class attack cruiser. There's also the Eagle from Space: 1999 and the escape shuttle from Alien in there. Also, pointless trivia, but Captain Tau is played by Anita Dobson, who was (and indeed is still) married to Brian May.
Captain Tau is also the name they gave the captain in the attempted American remake of Red Dwarf. I wonder if killing her off was creator commentary on how that went? It was not a happy time for them, at all.
It may be too late if you're too far ahead on Patreon but if not, when you get to season 7 you should definitely consider watching the extended cuts of the episodes
It great to see you in the same room for a reaction, and saying "gals from the dwarf" 😂. But let's be serious for a moment, never attempt a vindaloo 🤯. I believe someone said "I'll eat my words"... ALPHABETTY SPAGHETTI
That's probably largely due to the fact that there was the longest break up to this point between Series 6 and 7. Partly because of Grant and Naylor's falling out and partly because Craig Charles had to go and serve a prison sentence.
I'd recommend watching the Series 7 TV version with the added laughter track. You'll need it. The pauses for the laughter track, I find, make it uncomfortable viewing. I think that's where the 50/50 divide on Series 7 comes from.
Did you spot the retcon of the Lister/Kochanski relationship? With this episode, she goes from being an unrequited love to an ex-girlfriend who dumped him after three weeks. An example of continuity from the novels (which I highly recommend, btw) making its way into the show, as Grant and Naylor thought Lister's original attitude toward her was immature, and that it would be better if he were pining for a relationship he'd lost rather than one he never had. Also, between S5 and S6, there had been an unbroadcast pilot for a US version of the show featuring Robert Llewellyn (with the Cat played by Hinton Battle, who sadly passed away yesterday), followed by a 10-minute promo, which can both be seen on YT.
I hadn't heard that about Hinton Battle, what a shame. One of the "Behind the Scenes" Red Dwarf videos had a lovely anecdote from Danny John-Jules. He said that when the cast heard about the US version of RD in development, of course everyone was cynical. But when the news came about who had been cast as Cat, Danny was taken aback. Hinton Battle had been a major inspiration to Danny in his life & career, and he (Danny) said something like, "It's a pretty amazing thing to have your own role model perform a character that is so close to your heart."
The female who got killed by the psirens who was with kochanski was Anita Dobson (wife of Queens Brian May) who plays Miss Flood in the Doctor Who episode: 'The Church on Ruby Road.' P.s. ive just noticed everybody else has imparted the same information. Oh well.❤😂😂
If you're surprised that Red Dwarf isn't in Red Dwarf, read up on Taggart sometime. Scottish police procedural centred on Jim Taggart, ran from 1985 to 2010 (with a pilot in 1983). Mark McManus, who played Jim Taggart, died in 1994. The title referred to a character who wasn't in the show for more than half of the life of the show!
Craig Charles complained that Rimmer was getting more action than Lister. So they gave him this scene lol He says in the DVD commentary, “Talk about making me pay for it!”
I love how unpredictable this series can be.. all with some really solid sci-fi. Kryten-3D reminds me so much of the movie Top Secret. I had to laugh, my wife was presenting at a science conference and caught herself about to drop the S-bomb and hedged to Schiesse just like you did Kat. The only problem... she was in Germany lol.
Hey Paula, remember when you said "What if the rest of the show just takes place on the stupid bug"? … Well… Oh dear. 😂
I sniggered.
It was a chuckle moment

It's interesting to me that they spent more time reintroducing us to the characters and their personality traits than they did explaining what happened between series! Like they're more concerned about new viewers than returning fans.
I do love this Kochanski
Together again in person!! This season has some of the best episodes and is also the beginning of the downfall (if comes back) and Paula guessed right about being stuck on Starbug ages ago.
The small seasons are condensed for you, for us at the time is was sometimes years and years and years between them
Oooh , dinner plans sound good Paula.., I'll have a spicy Rogan Josh, some onion Bhaji's , a garlic Naan, with some minted yogurt dressing on the side Pls Gals !! :)
Fun Fun Fun in the Sun Sun errr. asteroid episode ;p
Series 6 and 7 are my absolute favorites
6:35 "Like an episode of Star Trek" - one of the derelicts in the field is in fact a model of a Klingon Vor'Cha class attack cruiser. There's also the Eagle from Space: 1999 and the escape shuttle from Alien in there.
Also, pointless trivia, but Captain Tau is played by Anita Dobson, who was (and indeed is still) married to Brian May.
I understand the Eagle and Alien Shuttle but how did the Vor’Cha get there?
@@Meritania "puq Hutlh! nguvchoH!"
If the first result for "klingon translator" can be trusted, anyway.
Captain Tau is also the name they gave the captain in the attempted American remake of Red Dwarf. I wonder if killing her off was creator commentary on how that went? It was not a happy time for them, at all.
It was funny to that DS9 had Jupiter Mining Company on one the Promenade screens because they were fans of the show.
It may be too late if you're too far ahead on Patreon but if not, when you get to season 7 you should definitely consider watching the extended cuts of the episodes
See also as prof. Mamet, Jenny agutter, as seen in American werewolf in London and a Sheild director in the MCU
Wasn't she also the hottie in Logans Run?
@wyrmshadow4374 yes she was Jessica 6 in Logans Run, the movie not the TV show.
More recently she is in Call The Midwife.
Also also, the male psirens victim played by Richard Ridings who does the voice of daddy pig in Peppa pig
There's also The Railway Children that she was in.
It great to see you in the same room for a reaction, and saying "gals from the dwarf" 😂. But let's be serious for a moment, never attempt a vindaloo 🤯. I believe someone said "I'll eat my words"... ALPHABETTY SPAGHETTI
The BBC loved the hell out of series 6, when I was a kid in the 90's If Dwarf was on there was a 99.99999% chance it was S6
It's the "Back to the Future 3" of TV series 😅
Yes, I started with S6 and got to see it about three times before they showed any of the earlier series.
I remember they repeated it, but played the episodes in the wrong order which really annoyed me.
That's probably largely due to the fact that there was the longest break up to this point between Series 6 and 7. Partly because of Grant and Naylor's falling out and partly because Craig Charles had to go and serve a prison sentence.
BBC2 in the mid 90s could justify it's existence to the BBC board by saying "series 6?"...every year from '93 onward
Hhhhhhmmmmmm Peter Tranter's sister ❤️ 😍
Another great reaction, Gals! Funny how, although you are both in the same room, the background makes it look as if you are not...
The pen and full stop lime still killed me
I'd recommend watching the Series 7 TV version with the added laughter track.
You'll need it.
The pauses for the laughter track, I find, make it uncomfortable viewing.
I think that's where the 50/50 divide on Series 7 comes from.
Interesting... I always figured people were down on series 7 because they rewrote sweet K as a total B... :D
The retcon occurs in season 3 there's a throw away line about how they dated.
@@wodmarachOh yes! There's a line in S4's DNA about him wanting to become a squirrel after she finished with him.
The woman before Kochanski is Mrs Flood from Doctor Who
The female who got killed by the psirens who was with kochanski was Anita Dobson (wife of Queens Brian May) who plays Miss Flood in the Doctor Who episode: 'The Church on Ruby Road.'
P.s. ive just noticed everybody else has imparted the same information. Oh well.❤😂😂
The thing i like is that you said a few episodes back, i hope they dont lose Red Dwarf and stay on that mini ship. 😂 I knew this episode was soon haha
So glad you got into this series...😊
Another quality psicat video!
"Inspecturrr, thurs bin a murrdurr."
Though IMO, the best thing about Taggart was Mark's cameo in Scotch and Wry in one of the Supercop sketches.
Blake's 7 did it first!
Hope you 2 enjoy my favorite series of Red Dwarf!
Paula called it a few videos back 😄
Boys from the Bug
So when it comes to eating words... do like it with ketchup? Just asking...
and here we are on that stupid bug lol 😆
Craig Charles complained that Rimmer was getting more action than Lister. So they gave him this scene lol He says in the DVD commentary, “Talk about making me pay for it!”
I love how unpredictable this series can be.. all with some really solid sci-fi. Kryten-3D reminds me so much of the movie Top Secret. I had to laugh, my wife was presenting at a science conference and caught herself about to drop the S-bomb and hedged to Schiesse just like you did Kat. The only problem... she was in Germany lol.
