I actually just finished A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking a couple of days ago and LOVED IT! The main character was just so wonderful and I loved everything in this book!
I loved the magic system being really strangely specific forms of magic 😂 It really forces the author to think creatively about the way they use magic in battle 🙌
I was surprised and happy that Lackey was included! Since you focus more on fantasy, I would recommend checking out Bujold's "World of the Five Gods" aka "Chalion" series, either the older novels ("Curse of Chalion" and "Paladin of Souls", and the not quite a sequel "Hallowed Hunt") or the newer series of novellas, "Penric and Desdemona". It won a Hugo for best series in 2018 (and her SF series the Vorkosigan Saga won the same award in 2017) but despite that neither series seems to get talked about much in Booktube.
Sabriel by Garth Nix. I know it's "old" but I love it. I've read it 3 times in the last 3 years (since I first read it) and it's just kind of cozy/dark fantasy (and is shelved YA). I know it may not be to everyone's taste, but I recommend it to everyone anyway. I was actually reminded strongly of it while reading Sorcery of Thorns. You can read Sabriel as a standalone even though there are more books in the series. They follow other characters at different times (future/past).
I listened to A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking a couple of months ago. I discovered T. Kingfisher last year also. I love it when a story is focused on a small seemingly useless power and the magic user does a deep dive into all the uses of that power and they end up being more useful that the strong power blasting types.
Witch Hat Atelier quickly became my favorite manga ever, it deals with so many artists struggles (inspiration, plagiarism, artblock...) and societal issues, I cannot recommend it enough! ♥ (And Shirahama has the prettiest artstyle AAAH) Thank you for sharing your recommandations with us! The art of prophecy is really intriguing, I'll check it out soon! ♥
Great recommendations, thank you! I also really loved Rebecca Ross' Duology, A River Enchanted and A Fire Endless, they are a wonderful story and so well written, I have been surprised that fantasy booktubers haven't read or discussed it.
I'm currently reading The raven and the reindeer by T. Kingfisher and I'm loving the story. I love The snow queen fairytale and T. Kingfisher has made interesting plot twist to this fairytale.
I’m so excited for the Art of Destiny by Wesley Chu to come out in August!!! You are the reason I read The Art of Prophecy and I absolutely loved the book!!!
A huge YES to Cinda Williams Chima - she never gets enough love. Her 7 Realms series is SO, SO underrated. If you ever want me to get you a signed copy of one of her books I see her a few times a year; I'd be glad to hook you up as a thank you from an appreciative subscriber 💜 I also see the Knight Owl author here and there so same goes for that one.
If you have not grown up with Mercedes Lackey you have missed out. They have one of the most ahead of its time inclusive writing styles. Most of the Valdemar books that the Arrows are part of are always broken into trilogies so its not endless reading to get to a conclusion. I can not speak more highly about another author that I have met. There are also urban fantasy she wrote before it was really a genre that are fun as well. Diana Tregard and the Serreted edge series. Hope you all enjoy them if you give them a chance
I personally found her stories to be pretty problematic as they completely disregard consent. Once you're chosen as a Herald, you either have to comply with the compulsion, of this horse-like creature that you are now essentially soul-bound to, whose feelings and mind you now share...or you both die. And you die if one or the other dies, which isn't as unlikely as one would think or hope, considering that the country throws you into wars, that you are again, conscripted into without much if any input from you. Even as a child, as heavily romanticized as it is, I still found it creepy. So if anything, I was dismayed that she recommended Lackey.
I just purchased "The Art of Prophecy" because of your recommendation. Also because that book looks so beautiful. I got the hardback to give my son for his upcoming birthday ❤️🔥💞🦄 ...and the Kindle/Audible versions for myself. 🌠👑 I swear that watching your videos costs me sooooooooo much money! Good thing there's no such thing as owning too many books! 😂❤
YES I am obsessed with Children of Ragnarok. I cannot wait til the next installment. I was so invested by the end and love the Norse mythology symbolism - makes me even more excited for the next.
finally! books you recommend that I've read lol (Mercedes Lackey). but I am feverishly making lists from your videos, as I find a lot of books lose my interest quickly, so it's good to get some reviews to help me gauge what to stick with
T. Kingfisher has become a favorite author for me. I fell in love with Swordheart which plunged me into the world of the White Rat, so I have since read all of the books in that series and am anxiously waiting for the next installment. I just bought A Wizard's Guide and Nettle and Bone, so I'm looking forward to more of her wonderful writing. I also just finished Arrows of the Queen and I'm looking forward to reading more in that world as well.
Love seeing books that don't get talked about as much. I really enjoyed The Athena Club triology, a retelling of horror classics set at the time of the Jack the Ripper murders
Ive been meaning to get to Witch Hat Atelier, but I feel like I might need to get to that ASAP. Bought the audio of The Art of Prophecy due to your review, but I've decided to wait for my BB copy of it to arrive before I start.
witch hat atelier was such a precious find! it is currently my favourite manga ever and as an amateur artist the ART BLOWS ME AWAY i've lost count of the number of times i keep going back to certain panels it's ingenious
The most underhyped fantasy book I've read recently is The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez. That book was absolutely stunning, I've never read anything quite like it, and you're one of the few people I've seen even mention it on your channel! As soon as I finished it I wanted to start it all over again.
Great list of books. I've added Witch Hat Atelier and Blade of Secrets (obviously as a 1st book to Master of Iron) on my TBR. Thanks so much, as usual, for a great video. :)
Never read the fantasy books but I really enjoyed a few of her horror novels and the collection of her web comic Digger (published under Ursula Vernon) Whoops for to say i was talking about T Kingfisher
Do you think a 7 year old girl would enjoy this book, if I read it with her? Or is there too many adult situations? Thanks for your input, looking for something different for my granddaughter.
@@shellykeyes8389 might be a bit grown up for a 7 year old. I would wait until 10 or 11 at the youngest. Someone is murdered at the beginning of the book and it's a little graphic.
WITCH HAT!!!!! YAAAAAASSSSS!!!!! Agreed, I am surprised so few people have been talking about The Art of Prophecy. It was a lot of fun. There is a huge lack of people diving into the backlog of fantasy on booktube. Love seeing people bringing some of these gems back to the forefront.
Thanks for recommending Trailblazer, about Dorothy Butler Gilliam. I've been trying to listen to audiobooks during my commute, and I really enjoyed her story!
Please please please read road of the lost! It is so whimsical and I think you’ll love it! It’s really the true spirit of Fae and not sexy Fae that’s become so common
I’m surprised that I haven’t seen much for Django Wexler’s Shadow Campaign series on book tube. There is a couple, but not anyone that I generally watch. Would be interested in your opinion on them. I got stalled by ending of the fourth book, and need some reassurance if I’m going to finish it haha
Have you ever read or watched D.Gray-man? It's probably the best manga and anime I have had the pleasure to watch and I haven't seen anything like it! I think that the manga was published around 2003 and the art style changes a lot throughout the manga, the anime too. Season one has 103 episodes and season two(D.Gray-man Hallow) has somewhere around 13 episodes with the second season being up to date with the latest manga chapters. It has this Halloweeny vibe going on and you might start sobbing on a few occasions. Resently I have been rereading the manga and I have been struck one too many times with the realization that these characters feel way too real. Oh and also you must definitely watch to episode 93 or read to chapter 170-something because believe me you will be slammed with realization that you know absolutely nothing about the characters or what the heck is going on! Oh and new volumes come rarely so if you see that chapters updates come once every four months and nothing comes sooner don't be surprised. But all in all the slow updates are worth it for this masterpiece and I swear Katsura Hoshino(the creator) is a genius!
The older authors from the 80's and even earlier are worth exploring. Followed most of the Valdemar stories, many focus on YA overcoming adversity but they don't bang you over the head with it. Her Vow and Honor series is very good also. Have you read the early Robert Heinlein books, The Red Planet or Have Spacesuit Will Travel? Or Andre Norton?
The world of the white rat series are a set of 6 fantasy books also written by T. Kingfisher and they are great! I still think Nettle & Bone is her best work but you can definitely feel her unique sense of humour in these books as well ❤ (I didn’t love Defensive Baking but it could be because it’s middle grade)
I miss that youtubers doesn't talk very much about older books, some do like you. Like Katherine Kerr who was my big favorite in the 90s. But also newer like Trudi Canavan. Awesome books and series. A newer favorite Rachel Aaron I haven't seen around at all either
VALDEMAR! I love that world! I love that you get groups of trilogies that all follow someone else from a different time, or a different region, and it bounces backwards and forwards in time for the world. the last herald mage was my first trilogy. theres gorgeous omnibus colorful editions in paperback for a bunch of them. this one is teal! and so many queer characters as important figures in the world!
Also yes to Evicted - that was really eye-opening. Some of their stories were heartbreaking but also makes you as the reader really angry at how poorly we as a nation are handing these situations.
Love the Valdemar love. I would say, though, that her books are more from the 90s. While the first trilogy was published in the very late 80s, most came out in the 90s till today. Too bad so many of your age didn't find them when you were getting into reading in the 90s.
My go-to book that deserves more hype is Toby Alone by Timothée de Fombelle. It's a little older and it's middle grade, but it's my favorite book of all time and nobody has read it. Literally, if you type it into the YT search bar, you get no result and it makes me sad

Wizards guide to defensive baking was super cute.
I'm so glad you reviewed The Monsters We Defy a while ago, I probably wouldn't have picked it up without you and I really liked it!
I'm hoping to get to Children of Ragnarok soon as I have heard such great things about it.
I love Mercedes Lackey and ‘The Arrows Trilogy’! ❤ I read it in the old 80s edition many years ago.

I picked up If You Could See Me on a whim during B&N's end of the year sale. Might have to move it up the TBR.

I loved the Arrows Trilogy! I hadn't read Mercedes Lackey in a while and I was glad I picked up some of her books again.
My 12 yr old daughter and I both really enjoyed A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking! I read it on your recommendation and then passed it on to her!

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is great, the other books in that style they did are good as well
I read Art of Prophecy because you chatted about it. And I loved it so much. Have you read “Never Die” by Rob J Hayes?? I think you would love it.

The Art of Prophecy sounds so different and good!
i like If you could see the sun.. its an easy & interesting read
Funnily enough, I just put A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking[ and Children of Ragnarok] on my TBR just the other day! 🤭
Now, I'm adding The Art of Prophecy onto my TBR too-I think I heard of it before, but then somehow forgot, so thanks for reminding me!
My go-to book that deserves more hype is Toby Alone by Timothée de Fombelle. It's a little older and it's middle grade, but it's my favorite book of all time and nobody has read it. Literally, if you type it into the YT search bar, you get no result and it makes me sad
Please take a look at the children of time series. I know science fiction isn't your thing, but these books have NOT been talked about nearly enough
I love Cinda Williams Chima and gave Children of Ragnarok a try but didn't really enjoy it.
More hype: Beyond Redemption by Mike Fletcher.
This really should be on the list since it did so poorly ini the review section, albeit, for good reason, and those poor reviews are why I picked up that book. Highly recommend if you like morally gray characters.
Elliot Brooks deserves more hype on youtube. Your fantasy book is cool. When will the followups be out?
You missed the Spellmonger Series
