    13 years ago, my Daughter married. My heart was in love with a particular dress that I so badly wanted her to choose. She chose a dress that I hated, but I never said a word. I pretended to love it, but secretly, my heart was broken. When the wedding pics came in, there was that dress that I hated. I kept silent and respected her choice. She was gorgeous in anything she wore and on her wedding day she was stunning.
    March 15, 2021 my Daughter, Leslie, passed in her sleep from a brain bleed. The first thing I asked for is her Wedding dress. Yes, the dress I hated has now become the dress I love because it represents one of the happiest days of her life. I will cherish it all the days of my life.
    It's not about the dress. It's about the joy the dress brings to the excited, beautiful Bride in this phase of life's journey. My advice...like the dress. Write the check. Pretend you love it because you love her!

    I had a friend that went to 4 bridal shops with her mother, cousins, friends, and all of them said NO to all 19 dresses she tried on, even though she absolutely loved a good 5 of them. After the last place, she would dress shop in secret, just her. Too many opinions spoiled it for her, so she went alone. No, I was not involved in anything and yes, the bride was using her own money to pay. Anyway, she went back to place #2 (or 3, it's been years, can't remember) and got one she had tried on, and I was GORGEOUS. She showed her mom who...loved it, said she didn't see that one. Friend just rolled her eyes. Point is: don't take too many people with you. It can really mess up your own opinion. You want to feel and be gorgeous on your wedding day, not have any doubts. I took my own mother, and she said I looked like a big calla lily in my dress, LOL (she loved it, not hated it).

      I went alone as well. I knew exactly what I wanted and found it - I was the bride and I was paying so other opinions did not matter to me. No one else saw it until my fitting and everyone there loved it.

      For my first wedding, I only had my mom, and for my second dress, I went alone and paid for it as well! For my daughter's wedding, it was just her and me and we had the dress in 30 minutes! No "entourages" whatsoever. You do NOT need them--they are WAY too distracting.

      This!! As a bengali I've been to wedding dress shopping of my family and have been supportive however there are too many people and too many opinions and it just gets to you and ruins the day. It puts you in a bad mood. I'd rather go alone or with my partner (as in my tradition the men buys the dress and matche) at the end of the day its the brides decision as its her wearing it. It's as if people forget about being comfortable in the dress

  • @racheldechene6069
    @racheldechene6069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +867

    Here's a tip: When my daughter went dress shopping, I wasn't in love with the dress she picked but it was her wedding and I supported her, kept my negative thoughts to myself and was happy that she found the dress she loved. Basically, I shut my mouth and went along with her vision because it was HER DRESS, HER DAY! In the end on her wedding day, she looked stunning! More moms/entourages should follow that rule and support the BRIDE!

      A good mother is one who respects that her adult children are adults in their own right and supports their choices or stays silent. In this case it is the brides day and her choice is the only choice that matters. Good on you x

    • @ladennayoung2939
      @ladennayoung2939 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yep. I agree. I think that was the best approach. The problem is in all honesty a lot of mother's are jealous of their daughters. They also don't respect them as an adult or individual. Everyone don't like the same things, and we have to learn that is okay. We should NEVER force our opinions onto others. Because that then become narcissistic and controlling. No one have that right to attempt to rule over someone in that manner.

    • @ladennayoung2939
      @ladennayoung2939 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@shershan254 Not necessarily. Generally most children respect and value their mother or parents in general. And if you have been around controlling and narcissistic parents all of your life. You don't really see their attitude as an issue. Because they brainwash you to feel as though you really don't have the right to have a voice. And if you try to share your own opinion or insight. They will try to make you feel as though you are being disrespectful towards them, and in a lot of cases you just shut down as an attempt to keep the peace if you will. In cases like this you generally have to go no contact with them in order to protect your own joy, peace, and sanity. Because more often then not they will NOT change, and they will keep dismissing you as an individual and your feelings. It's not what you want to do, but it's necessary at times. Parents like these are emotionally, psychologically, and verbally abusive. Try not to judge or condemn people to harshly if you really don't understand what they are going through.

  • @raven-kn6lv
    @raven-kn6lv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +172

    This mother is one of the few mothers on this channel who gave their opinion, but still gave respect to the bride. She's happy if her daughter is happy. You can tell what she needed to see was the full picture meaning the veil, flowers and more customization. For her class=more glam. That's what the daughter wanted in the first place with a two into one piece anyways.

    • @AndrewMacLaine
      @AndrewMacLaine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think it's because the handkerchief ruffles look deconstructed and "raw". Traditionalists will want everything to look clean and neat, otherwise it will look unfinished and low class. But the thing is, the raw elements will tell a story if the "messy" elements transition into an elegant, classy finish.

      @@ladennayoung2939 I don't know if it's so much narcissistic and jealous as opposed to wanting the best for her daughter. My mother was the same way, but I knew that she had the best intentions at heart. It's hard, especially when you are very close to your momma. When I had picked out my first dress, my mom was very opinionated on it. Unfortunately he had passed away only a few years into the marriage. Now the second time I have to pick a dress, I have to do it without my momma close by as she passed away a couple of years ago. I would give anything to have her here to be a part of the process. To have shut the mom out of the process would have caused unnecessary issues and tension that the bride didn't need.

My 2nd daughter, however, is more fond of plain dresses. She tried on dresses that I loved & that she liked but the gown she ended up picking was made of dutchess satin and had a little bling on it. Was it my favorite? No, but I didn't tell her because when she put it on she radiated beauty & looked so happy in the dress. It's her day & she picked the dress she loved. Definitely a first they respected her budget. Definitely need to respect their culture and how family dynamics can be very different than what they are used to dealing with daily. It helps to understand what the parents have issues with and respecting that while helping the bride fulfill their dream gown. Plus many people can’t see the whole picture without seeing a veil, and accessories because not everyone can visualize it in their head. So glad that she found her gown and everyone was happy in the end.

      Seemed to me that Mother did not like the look of white wedding dresses, implying they lack class and she will perhaps be much happier with the Guian wedding clothes I bet she will be smiling then. The bride to be looked beautiful and there was a marked difference in their acceptance of what 'class' was. I am glad the Mother appeared to come round in the end but I bet she was still critical of the dress once home - oh, dear! My Mother would have been the same if she had seen me in Guain wedding attire. Young people have so much to deal with in this generation game. I wish the bride to be and her handsome husband all the very best.
