Keith on the sound techs re: his open-sounding bass drum: "When they figured it out, it was okay."
And therein lies the problem with so many soundmen: they want the drummer to figure out a compromise rather than come up with the solution themselves. They have essentially got one drum mic'ing technique in their arsenal, and that is stuff the bass drum and cut a hole in the front head.
Some years ago the Evans website informed me that Keith used a clear G1 (thin) batter. So I got one. There was no info on his front head. My front head had some form of damping on it but no hole. And nothing in the bass drum - it was wide open. The two sound guys were freaking out during sound check (it was an open-air gig) because they were accustomed to mic'ing stuffed bass drums, often single-headed.
"How does the drum sound to you?" I asked them. "It sounds amazing," they responded. "Okay," I retorted, "if this drum sounds amazing, all you need to do is mic the amazing and put it in the mix." Telling them that John Bonham played his bass open seemed to legitimise the idea.
It took them 20 minutes but they eventually figured it out. I later ported the front head so I wasn't constantly dealing with that hassle.

Thanks guys. I'm right smack in the middle of trying to find my bass drum sound. I really like the open sound but I have to be careful because sometimes I play small restaurant gigs. Also. Sometimes I have to mic the bass drum. Still figuring it out. But this definitely helps.

Larry Mullen Jr has some tracks with a totally unmuffled kick drum sound. Totally different style but .... has that metallic but round sound

With a 26” open wide, it seems to create an earthquake that you might not realize until you stop playing it.

Surely it cannot be an emperor he used..cannot be.. must be an ambassador he used. I've ordered an emperor anyway, apparently they're boomier than a ps3 even though they're double ply. Maybe it could be an emperor after all aye

It’s a sound engineers job to capture your sound.....not the other way around.

Its a team effort to make to fit the music and venue as best as possible. That attitude is unbearable.

It kills me that drum companies have taken steps to maximize resonance, and engineers want to take it away.
