    Nice video!! I'm looking at one of the swamp runner kits with a 13 hp predator and was wandering is it hard to hold on to when it hits all that vegetation?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Not that I've noticed. If you're running open water and hit a stump that you didn't see, it'll scare ya and jerk depending on how you struck the stump. If it's a straight-on hit then the skeg takes the hit and it's not bad, but if you are running and only the prop hits then it'll jump to one side. When running grass and thick vegetation, it's not hard to hold on to the tiller, just make sure you have good footing and balance if you're on plane.

    Man i want one...i have a 1448 deep wall flatbottom right now with a 25hp evinrude...but i have an old 12ft flat bottom that i want a mud motor for...what would u suggest for it...its a 1232 I believe...is a 6.5 kit decent enough to get through some shit? Or should i stick with a 420?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late response. It got put in review for "language" and just now caught it. For a 1232 or a 1236 the 6.5hp engine is great! I'm actually getting my 6.5hp engine cleaned up to put on the 1436 to see how it does. I've had it on the 1436 before and got 12mph without playing around with props. Now when it comes to heavy vegetation and nasties, the 13hp thrives. The 6.5hp engine doesn't have all that much torque to it so it struggles pushing a load through mud and grass. The 13hp can handle a bigger prop and has more torque to really power through, but most 1236 and 1232 can't handle the weight of the engine and the operator and the chances of swamping the boat really increases.

    Well, I'm stuck and I value your opinion. I have 3 little boys (7, 9, 11) that weigh in around 50, 60, 70lb for a total of about 180lbs. I weigh about 220lb. I really want a 1542 for the little bit of extra length/width but I'm not sure about motors. I was leaning towards a 13hp predator/ honda gx390 but wasn't sure if that would be enough. I didn't really want the added weight of a 22hp. I know it sounds like a lot,but with their combined weight, it's pretty much like having just one more grown man in the boat besides myself. I have access to the Honda for free (non functioning pressure washer) or I can spend a few hundred on a new predator but I was trying to avoid $750+ for anew 22hp. Do you think 13hp is enough for a 1542 and 400lbs of people? Thanks. Going with the swamp runner either way

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to reach out and also for your kind words. When ever I hear a 1542 I think large kit and a 22 or 23hp engine (HB or Briggs and in your case a Honda) A 13hp engine will work, but it will function as an inexpensive means of propulsion. With that kind of weight in the boat, it will most likely not have the torque to power you through thick mud. As long as you are floating on water, the 13hp should do fine, you just won't go fast. It will still eat up heavy vegetation. No matter if you get the large or medium kit, you will need the 100" shaft. The added weight of the 22hp honda would be a downside, but you gain A LOT more torque and HP. It just depends on what you plan to use it for and you plans down the road. You're kids are going to continue to grow and get heavier also. So if you need it to power through mud and get to tricky places, you'll need the 22hp engine; but if you just need an inexpensive means of propelling a boat, the 13hp will do it, jus not in a quick manner. If you have any more question or maybe I sparked a new question, please let me know. I'm glad to help any way I can

      @@JTgatoring thanks for the quick reply. I don't ever deal with mud up here in Ohio, just rivers between 2'-5' with the occasional tree or skinny water that would chew up an outboard. Any feelings on the duramax 16hp? Thanks again.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harleywayne6456 I would not recommend it. There are few reasons why, but the main thing is that the harbor freight has the same specs as the dura when it comes to cylinder size, bore, and everything else and you'll be able to find parts and answers to problems easier for the predator engine.

    Good thing about longtails is you can always find a bite somewhere if you get stuck.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I have water or mud that the longtail can grip, then the boat will propel forward. If the prop can't bite, then I'm on dry land, and I can get out and move it hahaha

    How is the weedless PVC mod holding up? Are you using the one piece versus the multiple pieces you showed on your other vid? I saw another youtuber tried the mod and his appeared to fail, any ideas on why his didn't work.
    I appreciate your time to reply, I want to pull the trigger on an SPS kit however I want to ensure weeds won't be a problem since my area has so much vegetation. Thanks!

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not been out much. That's why I haven't been uploading many videos. The reason his failed, is because he used thin wall PVC pipe and only did a single layer. The thin wall is not as structurally sound as the thicker PVC (standard sch40), and it gets hot a lot quicker. He did have both thin wall and standard wall pvc pipe so I don't know which one failed on him. This was also because he only used one layer. With it getting hotter quicker, it got hot enough to melt onto his shaft causing an issue. That is the reason I used two sizes of pipe, and standard thickness, so that way it would take a lot longer for it to heat up when in heavy grass without water. I have been in thick stuff and not had an issue. When you get your sps kit, dial it in, figure out the best prop for you, then add this spacer in the once piece version, and don't plan to switch out your prop that much. The multiple slices are a pain and don't work out as well as I would have liked. I am currently using the 3d printed version a viewer made for me here - th-cam.com/video/RFxwi7yMP4w/w-d-xo.html

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      👊 Thank you thank you!! That means a lot. So far this boat is about perfect for me really. I can fish out of it, I can bow fish from it, alligator hunting works great in it, it's light enough to run through some skinny stuff and the motor is still small enough to be really fuel efficient, I don't have to worry about staining carpet or cleaning it because it cleans really easy. If I were to recommend a boat to someone for a 1436 it would be a tracker. I would go to a tracker 1436 if this boat disappeared. A good thing about the Tracker 1436 is that the transom is put together with bolts and nuts, so it can easily be replaced when it rots out. This alumacraft is put together with rivets so it makes it more difficult.

      what's the difference between your mud motor and a surface drive?

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Self-EsteemandHowtoImprove Depends on what you're looking for. I chose the Thai longtail route because it is a simple build and easy to fix. I can fix almost anything out on the water if it breaks on the longtail. When doing some research, I would read a lot about people breaking belts on their surface drive and that is was difficult for them to change that out on the water when it happened. The Thai longtail is also cheaper too which helps a lot.
      Awesome! Most people put the 22hp predator on a 1542, but I'm sure it'll ride out with a 13hp. What motor do you plan on putting on it??

    I want to get the sps large kit with a 40hp Subaru. What boat would you recommend in combination with this? Speed is not everything to me I would like more of comfort with a speed of high teens to 20mph. Thanks for any feedback

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I have a 1436 with a 13hp and I'm getting high teens and mid 20's for mph. The main guidelines you should follow for these longtail mud motors to work is a transom no taller than 20 inches, and try to keep the bottom width under 48". These longtail boats like narrow hulls. If you could run an 18' or 20' boat with a 36" bottom that boat would be able to carry a lot of weight and go fast with a small motor compared to say a 16' boat with a 48" bottom and the same load. There was someone who had a 1648 flat bottom skiff with a stock 23hp Briggs and a large sps kit and they got 23mph. With a 40hp Subaru that's huge. You could move a big boat with a big load if you only wanted to stay in the mid 20 mph range. First, I would call Swamp Runner and get their input, but I think if you stay within the guidelines above, then you should be able to go with a 2048 if you can find something like that. I do not know though. I only have experience with my kit and set up.

    • @JTgatoring
      @JTgatoring  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of my older videos have the 6.5hp motor, but this is the 13hp motor with a medium Swamp Runner kit on it. I like to use the SPS Swamp Runner 8.75" weedless prop. It pushes the boat a constant 19mph and does pretty good against the grass. I was also testing out the CLP and CKS weedless props but I didn't like them that much. They didn't grip as good, were slower, and caught more weeds.
