Virginia Beach spearfisherman captures encounter with great white shark during Outer Banks dive

- Video provided to The Virginian-Pilot by David Scherrer shows his close encounter with a 10-foot great white shark while spearfishing about 20 miles off the North Carolina coast.
Shark: “Looks like someone’s a little lost…”
*sees gun*
“And I hope you find your way-have a nice day”
Yeees!😂
“I believe that’s your boat right over there sir, try not to get the bends”
Fun fact sharks don't like it when you point anything at them. They're ambush predators the idea that you see them makes them uncomfortable. When you add f-off to the equation they always dip. That haven't been said I would be extremely concerned that he's just going down to shoot up at you after..... From below. I would so be GTFO.....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The shot of that shark slowly swimming towards the camera is a cinematic nightmare.
The way they can play off their next move is insanely predatorish
It's barely 3 feet long. 😂
*Edit*
For those who misinterpret my statement, here are the rest of my replies:
My point is that it is small and, contrary to popular opinion, great white sharks rarely attack humans. I'm not saying that I would not have been concerned. Only that I would have been far more concerned if it was larger, or was a bull or tiger shark because they attack humans much more often.
Also, can't believe I forgot this because it is the most relevant part. Great white sharks, and most others, do not approach prey from a horizontal angle. They charge it from underneath. You're most likely not going to see the shark that attacks you, until you're already in its jaws. The only time they approach something that they intend to eat slowly and from a relatively parallel angle is if the thing they are going to bite is already dead, like a blue whale in the middle of an ocean.
Again, in the moment it would be unnerving. But it really shouldn't bother an experienced diver to have an encounter like this. Looks good to people who never go in the ocean though. 😂
Have a great white day. 👍

Predators hate being face to face with their prey. Definitely an intense moment but very well composed there my friend. I’ll dive with ya!
Almost any animal doesn't know what to do if you stand your ground & make yourself look big. Getting into a fight where injury is possible is the last thing any wild animal wants, so if you look like you could fight back they think twice.
Edit: of course there are exceptions, especially if the animal has babies.

And they can see the silhouette of a black wetsuit from farther than you can see them. In slack or calm water they might even be able to sense movement in their lateral line before they even see you. Not sure how sharks work but I enjoy fishing and almost pursued a career in fisheries biology and many freshwater fish have heightened senses. They can feel, see, hear like you wouldn’t imagine. It wouldn’t take much in that situation to trigger a chase. Surfacing would scare me more than being face to face because most fish feed up and attack prey from the bottom.
The whole surfacing was scary as well because I agree with the previous comment-- they are known to swim away and then come UP and attack. They don't want to be seen when they attack which is why facing them constantly is so important. That diver is a very fortunate soul indeed!
The side eye of the gun is hilarious 😂
I've watched this clip about 50 times. And it amazes me every time.

For all you hunters, gun enthusiasts and spearfisherman that know little about how sharks actually function, sharks can't really tell you have a spear gun. The reason why it backed away wasn't the gun, it's the fact the person was aware of the shark's presence, was looking at it's approach and held out some sort of long implement in it's face. Sharks like the great white operate on the element of surprise and if they lose it they'll leave and find a better prey alternative. All of that is a deterrant to a continued attempt at an attack for the shark, but it by no means can recognize that the spear gun is an weapon that shoots a harpoon that could kill it.
You'll see this in other videos where awareness and the same factors aren't enough to ward off the shark and the shark attempts the attack only to be shot.
I think gun enthusiasts, or anyone else, who know nothing about sharks know that a shark doesn't actually know what a spear gun is. 🙄
Duh
No shit
You understand that there's this thing called humor?
Yes, at first he lied as if he was leaving, he walked away and suddenly turned into an attack position. It was scary. If the diver had not seen him, he would have attacked from below to his waist and legs.
It's amazing how fast the shark sped up with just those few poweful thrusts of its tail! One minute it's swimming along slow and smooth and then it's got you!
The way it just vanishes back into the ocean is chilling.

Which means you see them only if they let you see them.
Great white sharks rely on smell and eye sight. They have to be really close to use what you describe. Hammerheads can do it from further thanks to the hammerhead.

I just want to say that the diver handled the situation perfectly. He stood his ground and didn't panic as the shark swam closer out of curiosity, so it realized that the diver wasn't prey and it swam off. In the end neither the shark or the diver was injured, well done.
@skinny pig No it didn't! Great whites don't attack divers very often unless they're mistaken for a seal or something. They mostly accidentally attack surfers.
If you're ignorant enough to think a spear gun would kill the shark or that the shark somehow "knew" it was in danger then you know nothing about great whites. They are present every day on the California coast and they don't attack people unless they're mistaken for a seal.
@skinny pig no, it's just that we are like weird aliens to them so they get curious but once they see we aren't food, they often loose interest. Plus some species of sharks don't like the sound of bubbles.

Definitely a great white. No other shark has a face like that. Also the caudal (tail) fin is nearly synmetrical (which puts it in the mackerel shark family). Its proportions are those of a white shark rather than a mako. Hard to tell its size from this video, but it seems on the smaller side... maybe a juvenile. Still big enough to be able to cause damage. The spear Fisherman handled the situation perfectly.
Oceanic black tip🫤!!! That's a white shark right there. A juvie but still a deadly sized great white none the less
I actually have agreed & pressed "like " with some comments here with regard to the similar physical characteristics to a GW. However~ have never seen a White with such definitive & pronounced bi-coloured dorsal fin (*alikened to Oceanic Black Tip) which is SO obvious here. (Even juvenile whites will not have any black coloration).Notice also black colouration to the pectoral & caudal fins. Having looked further am now more convinced is Oceanic Black Tip. *pay careful attention to the differences between "Black Tip" (OCEANIC)" & "Black Tip" (REEF) sharks.
Seriously? The only thing anyone needs to look at is the fact that this shark is about 4 times bigger than the biggest Black Tip from ANYWHERE on the planet! I am perfectly willing to bet my LIFE on this NOT being a Blacktip shark!!!!! A little bit of color here and there is not enough to distinguish a species from any other. If a shark thinks that you do not know it’s presence then it may attack. If it has no option for stealth they will often do what that shark did and swim directly towards whatever it is interested in, often just out of curiosity. Sometimes scarily it is because they’re hungry and they generally are looking for food, what you did by not flinching and standing your ground is exactly what probably saved you from getting a nip.
