  • In this special edition of Indianomics, we dive into the recent volatility in global markets. August began with a significant downturn as the U.S. seemed dangerously close to a recession, and the Fed was expected to make six rate cuts over two years. However, just weeks later, stock indexes are nearing all-time highs, the economy appears strong, and the Fed is now expected to cut rates much more slowly. Amid all this uncertainty, what's the real state of the U.S. and global economy, and how does it affect India? Joining us to shed light on these issues is former RBI Governor and Professor of Finance at Booth School, Raghuram Rajan.

Recessions are part of the economic cycle, all you can do is make sure you're prepared and plan accordingly. I graduated into a recession (2009). My 1st job after college was aerial acrobat on cruise ships. Today I'm a VP at a global company, own 3 rental properties, invest in stocks and biz, built my own business, and have my net worth increase by $500k in the last 4 years.

Investing without proper guidance can lead to mistakes and losses. I've learned this from my own experience. If you're new to investing or don't have much time, it's best to get advice from an expert.

The issue is people have the "I want to do it myself mentality" but not equipped enough for a crash, hence get burnt. Ideally, advisors are reps for investing jobs, and at first-hand encounter, my portfolio has yielded over 300% since 2020 just after the pandemic to date.

Raghuram is a professional economist when he discuss about US and China economy. However the movement he talks about Indian economy he changes his colour and becomes a Politician, may be expecting that he will become Finance Minister under Rahul Gandhi or at least the Governor of RBI in future.

In 2004, FII inflows were 0.7 % of GDP; by 2014, they had become 1.7 %. Unfortunately, FII inflows have decreased to 1.45 % of our GDP today. This happened during a period when the world and its brother were following the China Plus One policy. India has missed a Golden opportunity to attract FIIs in the last decade.

Unemployment in India is altogether a different issue. There's a huge shortage of farm labourers in states like TN. TN has highest No of migration labourers from North & their work culture is not very suitable to TN. I could see many farmers & small industries are struggling to cope up. The 200 days job assurance scheme by Govt was a very bad idea. It deteriorated the work culture. They just work for about 4 to 5 hrs, local body & agents get 20%, all enjoy the scheme. No productivity at all, infact that led to farm labourers shortage. It may be suitable to poor states but definitely not state like TN where Per capita income is high arround 4.5 lakhs.
Govt need to focus on these issues and skill development is more important for high quality jobs. We are now importing skilled labourers from China!!
Govt schemes meant for job creations are not actually monitored. Politicians just announce schemes for the sake of getting votes not for real nation building.

We have had jobless growth as, in the last decade, India has moved to become a nation of traders rather than manufacturers. The contribution of Manufacturing to our GDP has decreased from 18 % to 14 % in the last decade. This has happened because we have a BANIA government in power.

RR such good man he was, but his inclination to China and woke culture has perhaps tarnished his image. His unfettered advocacy of China despite knowing their stance on so many critical issues and values, ethical standards have really helped him sink further.
His association with RG & band is even more questionable.
Notwithstanding anything mentioned above its pleasure listening to your analysis but always form the sidelines.
