Welcome to Kitabwala, Lallantop's weekly show where we chat with authors about their latest books. This week, we’re diving into Ruchir Sharma's eye-opening book on capitalism. In an interview with Saurabh Dwivedi, Sharma argues that modern capitalism has gone off track, not because of too little government, but because the government has been involved too much. From huge bailouts for the wealthy to extensive regulations and safety nets for everyone else, Sharma calls this "socialized risk."
He explores how this distortion of capitalism has contributed to slowing economic growth and rising discontent, especially in the context of recent U.S. elections, including those involving Biden and historical figures like Carter. Sharma believes that instead of more government intervention, a series of seven key changes could restore balance and revitalize the economy.
    About Ruchir Sharma:
Ruchir Sharma is the chairman of Rockefeller International and the founder of Breakout Capital. After 25 years at Morgan Stanley, Sharma moved to Rockefeller in 2022. He also writes for the Financial Times and has penned several influential books like "Breakout Nations" and "The Rise and Fall of Nations."

I think this is one of the best interviews on Economy. I hear Mr Sharma regularly on US CNBC where he is a frequent guest. But he only gets few minutes. Impressed with Surabh, he was fully prepared and had done his homework. There is a lot to digest from this interview. Great observation on what will be next dominant currency. There were several sub topics that could have a full interview. Great Job. Wishing you well. As to what I am reading. Begums, Thugs and White Mughals. Fanny Parker wrote about her travels while in India.

That's why you can see that even during the UPA time, Gujarat grew very well, and even during the NDA time, Tamil Nadu is growing very well. Another example would be Punjab and West Bengal. Both were among the biggest industrial power hubs in Asia during Independence, but later, both were ruined by their own state governments.

The American education system has been usurped by the Marxists for over 60 years that is why socialist ideology is gaining traction there. Before the 1990s when India opened its market many factories were state-run and were running in losses. People have forgotten what those times were. India has to mortgage its gold reserves. A country where people are ingrained with entitled casteism and some weaponize it can never develop. There was a time when India had 1647 castes and sub castes according to the 1901 census, by 2011 the number increased to 46 Lakhs. Yes, you heard it right we have 46 Lakhs castes and sub castes in this country. Of which about 4000 come under reservation. Out of which 3500 have taken all the benefits of reservation and 1500 of them are still where they were decades ago. Now, you have less than 1 Crore government jobs in the whole country. And all of these castes and sub castes are clambering for those. Now in such a system how can you find meritocracy and do you think such a system can ever make India a developed country? The government recently tried to get some expert technocrats as advisors with lateral entries. What did some opportunist politicians do? Get caste reservation into the whole process. The government tried to reform the agriculture sector. We all know what happened then. So just dividing the whole discussion between capitalism or socialism is not enough. There are far bigger lacunas in the Indian social system and culture. As far as America is concerned, there was a term used in the past "American Dream." It means that if you have an idea and a will to work hard the system will give you every opportunity to succeed. This promoted entrepreneurship which led to the formation of big conglomerates in the US. Today, with the advent of socialist and Marxist ideologies that dream is dead. Trump in his speech has emphasized this again and again. In fact, his whole campaign MAGA is based on the fact that he wants to bring that American Dream back. China on the other hand is the extreme form of both socialism and capitalism. It is a hybrid model. It is a known fact that many Chinese conglomerates have people associated with CCP as owners. And that the government literally runs sweat shops where people are made to work to the bone. Now, do I think both these models can work in India's context? The answer is no. An average Indian doesn't have an entrepreneurial mindset. He wants a job and for him or her a job is sarkari naukari. So the erstwhile American model doesn't work. For the Chinese model to work, India would need a dictatorship the chances of which are next to nil. So, India will be where it is, neither developed nor underdeveloped, always developing.

What a billionaire point you noted, I loved to hear from a renowed economist that, "Indian government sey ho nahi payega", because Indian expenses for Reaserch and Development is very low comparitevely and it's very important to understand that how TAIWAN uplifted their economy.
Indian government is working only for the reasons and solutions of their respective terms and powers or for the chair.
Indian government became impotent in my harsh words, only because of their arrogance and their compulsion of protecting their chair (governance).
Indian government is concentrated in the context of capitalism which is fatal and again Indian government is incompetant to spend appropriate capital for research and development.
It's also true that left and right both governance has no bigger difference in the economic context, whereas, they are having their fight regarding religion and region which shows how deadly they are forced to compete for the power first.
Bhajpa is the worm which stimulated the pillars of our contry's economy with their competant arguments regarding capitalism, religion, education, hospitality etc and BHAJPA fooled Indian generations with their arrogant policies after Late Atal Jee especially.
I would like to state that congress ideology is far better than this religious party because congress is a political party which bilieves in strenghting the pillars of education (research and development), industry, health, economy, armed forces, IT etc.
This arrogant government is focused on shining India in the name of burglary with slogans like "Made in India - Not Made by India" and hiding its uncementry constructions by fixing shining glasses despite of strengthing the construction with time, money, research and expertise.
Eventough, don't feel bad for this incompetant government of India just be positive and live for it, just try your level best and live for Indian economy.
Wishing everyone with my penny pocket.
