Ruchir Sharma is a gem! I can't wait to read his new book. I think it's hard to find economists who have this profound knowledge and understanding of the World politics. His observations and conclusions are top notch. Thanks for this interview:)

Why do people not talk about Bangladeshi, Pakistani Hindus who are really prosecuted.
Demographic change in India which could also lead to a similar situation as in both countries.

My brother just focus on your very own Community. Because monsters are growing who want to eradicate your very own Community. It can lead you to the extent of establishing a whole new country of own where your Community can find solace. My bother I wish you well. I am not your enemy just giving you a reality check. Stop wasting your energy on unnecessary causes.

Great conversation here. But would love to focus on the economic side and reforms for much longer in such interviews.

Democracy has deepened in India over the decades. Public sentiment cannot be bulldozed or overuled or dismissed even by a powerful executive. Scrutiny is intense amidst the advent of social media. But the cause of concern is shrill and divisive rhetoric which has the potential to polarise our society and polity. Much needed reform being held hostage by whims of populism is another such issue.

Welfare spendings have gone down, yet taxes are rising for honest tax payers. There is everything wrong with money management of this government. They have proven that they are no different from the previous govts who didn’t expand the tax base but have increased taxes for same 2% of tax payers of this country…

Ruchir Sharma please explain how from Gujarat in the west to Odisha in the East, BJP swept both states and all others in between - MP and Chattisgarh. Only big disappointments were UP, Bengal and Maharashtra.
So, your "general" observations in your election road trip are in fact general -- and silly

Good conversation except for the part on elections...democrats people , not wanting to give same people all the power , give some chance to the others etc...I'm paraphrasing... election analysis is typically personal view and conviction passed off as academic analysis...
UP and Maharashtra and Rajasthan ( to an extent )were mismanaged by the bjp machinery and the combined opposition fought well using the gaps provided by the stupidity and hubris of the bjp...
Punjab , TN and WB were always wishful thinking by the bjp environment...haryana the bjp is having a hard time with the dominant caste...
Rest of the points by Mr Sharma were fantastic!

Yeah, democracy is strong as long as the independence of the institution is guaranteed. However, for the past 10 years, there has been a growing resentment of the way political prosecution is done. It is a ticking timebomb that will explode if the RSS/ BJP agenda is not stopped. The vertical split in the lines of caste and religion will grip India if the BJP foments division. Look at the Manipur scenario, nothing concrete action has been taken by Modi to solve the issues. It is a tragedy and indifference attitude that will sow a seed of civil war in the long term. Democracy and Liberty cannot be taken for granted. We may go back to square one if divisive politics persist.

Does BJP foment division - yes Hindu/Muslim
Does RSS Foment division - No, it is a pro hindu pro India organization. There is nothing wrong with that. All religions have that.
Does BJP does caste based politics - no
Does Congress and its allies do caste based politics - yes
Does Congress and its allies do North South Divide - yes
Does BJP do North South Divide - no
      Khalistan issue - Congress
Manipur issue - BJP should have handled better President rule
      Kashmir issue - Congress
Congress economy - crony socialism and now communism
BJP economy - crony capitalism with welfare
