Happy New Year. I love the long tail cast on and have used it for many years. I do wrap the yarn around the needle to figure out the amount of yarn. However I only wrap 10 times and take that measure and fold the yarn on itself times the number of stitches I need. For example, take the tail size for 10 stiches, fold it on itself 5 times and you have the tail size for 50 stitches. Much faster than wrapping 50 times.

This episode was soo helpful with the quick "fix" of not having enough yarn to cast on all my stitches! I cannot tell you how many times I have ripped out and started over in anger at myself for not having enough because there have been so many. It usually is less than 5, which is the infuriating part.

Great video and super comments. Saying “I dare you” is root of “Playing chicken”. Calling yourself “chicken” is a way of saying “I am not daring”to do something from gambling on finishing a row with a questionable amount of yarn to asking someone for a date. I had three chicken episodes this week, lost all three. Love you both.

May be somebody already mentioned this BUT... I recently discovered that casting on for a circular needle it is actually better to put the tail over your thumb when casting on. I alway had a problem with making the connection. And now I found out this works better. Just cast on the stitches (with the tail over your tumb) separate the stitches in half. Let the loops al point up and Bob's your uncle (and yes, I know you both don't like the magic loop... but hey... I'm just sharing)

I taught myself to knit from a book when I was about 12 years old(haha, with pencils because I didn't have needles). It was very specific about everything -"you must do it this way only!". Like many north american knitters, I was extremely dependent on written patterns. Thankyou so much to both of you for teaching us to use our instincts and to just DO the thing without overthinking it. I have always loved knitting but I find it so much more enjoyable now that I have learned some things from you. I knew the longtail cast-on but found it frustrating to run out of tail yarn and having to start over. I watched another video where Arne explained a different way to continue and it has relieved so much stress. it's now the only cast-on that I use.

Thanks for the tutorial. It‘s the cast on method I use the most and so did my mother and grandmother. I also usually eye ball the tail, but for a lot of stitchesI start with a loop made by the two ends of a ball of yarn or two balls. After casting on all stitches I cut the unneeded end - you cannot run out of yarn that way. If You like cast on one stitch more and open the loop, so you haven‘t a bulky knot at the end. You might also mark every 50 or 100 stitches with a removable marker or a piece of contrasting yarn. For socks knitted with 2.5 mm you can measure the tail with a 20 cm DPN - 1 needle length makes around 15 stitches (I always add a little more for safety).

This was how I was shown to get the correct amount of yarn for the cast on. Take 1 needle and wrap around 10 times if you need 30 for the cast on. Now take the yarn off the needle (to be used as a measuring tape) and measure 10+10+10=30: Now you have the amount of yarn to use for cast on. So if you need 210 Drs for

Thank you! That bit of information about cutting the yarn and finishing wth a new strand is one of the best I've ever heard in my 82-year career of knitting! Wish someone had taught me that years ago. Although I'm not easily frustrated with knitting, and although I'm resigned to ripping out and starting over, it's so much nicer to start out with a happy heart.

So nice to have you back starting with laughters.🤣🤣🤣 Lovely also to see the snow through the window in the background. If you have that kind of ball where you can knit from both ends, and you don't mind weaving in one more end, you can do the long tail cast on using both ends, one on the thumb, the other one on the index. That way you always have eactly the amount of yarn needed for your cast on. I use this method when I have to cast on many stitches

Thanks for the tip. I have run out of tail before I've finish the cast on. This tip will help big time. Thank you again! I love you guys! ❤️

Love this cast on! It is my favorite also!! Thank you for the demo of adding in yarn when I run out during my cast on. I am so looking forward to trying the hack of determining how much I may need to start. I have unraveled so many times because I didn’t choose enough for my cast on! Great basic video. 👌🏻
