    “What if you need to cast on 200 stitches, first of all just don’t do it just move onto next project! “ 🤣 very comical! I love that trick with two separate ends so I never run out of yarn or have so much left over wasted yarn because I may have miscalculated.

    this is my favorite long tail cast on tutorial. I always refer new knitters here. I also put a st marker every 25 stitches so counting to check progress toward that 200 sts is much less painful.

    This is such a good explanation. I love, love, love your close ups and the fact that you repeat the cast on so many times while explaining. This is the clearest and best explanation I’ve seen of this online. I’ve been knitting since I was like ten, and have only ever used the knit cast on because it’s the way I was taught. But this is SO. MUCH. FASTER. May the knitting gods bless you with skeins that never knot or tangle and are always evenly dyed according to dye lot. Because you deserve it that much.

    My mum taught me this method 30 years ago - it’s the only way I know how to cast on. Super clear instructions - love it.

  • @KnittedbyCatherine
    @KnittedbyCatherine ปีที่แล้ว

    Very clear video - I was taught to do it with my thumb the second way and I was always confused if this method of casting on was the same as the long tail cast on. I’ve always called it the thumb method. Relieved I don’t need to learn a new way although with the help of this video I probably could!

    I lol’d when you said “if a project asks you to cast on 200 stitches, run away. Don’t cast on that project” 🤣 It’s good to hear someone like you, a professional knitter and designer, feel that away about casting on a large number of stitches.

    Stephen-Your method of using both ends of a cake for the cast on is brilliant! I recently case on 310 stitches for a horizontal brioche scarf, and it took me three tries to get a long enough tail to get it all cast on. Thanks to you, that won’t happen again! 😁

    In case it helps anybody else: Suzanne Bryan suggests that in order to keep the caston from being too tight you keep a little space between the stitches. The LT caston creates a series of loops (from the working yarn) pulled through loops (from the tail) where both are of equal size. If a larger needle is used the working yarn loops are larger and can appear sloppy. By spacing your stitches (I like to visualize them as if they were stretched like a hat would be) you are building in stretch while keeping both loops the same size. Also, once the loops are created and the space has been left you can tighten the yarn into position pretty firmly. Try it. It may or may not be the method for you but it's helped me! Happy knitting everyone

    • @patportran4683
      @patportran4683 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, of course, the way to make the cast-on stretchy is to provide more space BETWEEN stitches, and NOT to use a large needle!! Where do people learn these things? Doesn't anyone ever go to school??

    'grab the carrots' ...took me back to when I was helping my son learn cursive writing...I told him a story about the lower case k in a similar way, only it was a skier who'd lost his pole half way down and had to go back and get it and then had to go around another skier. I always use the long tail co, but over estimate by a lot when I do. I think I'll try the two end of yarn trick for my next co. Thank you!!!

    German twisted cast on is my ultimate favorite!!!!
    But I actually cast on 10 stitches & measure from that to be safe.
    I think it uses a tad more yarn. I NEVER do a slip stitch...
