It is amazing how you successfully explain a complicated biochemical process in our body in such simple way. Love the illustrations as well. Thank you!
I drink coffee almost every day because I love the taste and smell of it. But to avoid dependance on it I limit myself to only drinking it if I’ve had a good sleep. If I didn’t get enough sleep I won’t have coffee and that gives me the motivation to get proper sleep next time. So I use it like a reward system with positive reinforcement. I’ve been on pattern for like 5 months now and I don’t get any withdrawal symptoms when I miss a day and can easily go a few days without it.
That’s really good. And for something as tasty as coffee we should treat it like a candy or something, and be able to enjoy it and not feel guilty or like we need it to survive.
The effect is also nice. I like it as a boost when I’ve already got energy, but I don’t rely on getting my energy from it. Because then I’d let other areas slip, like allowing myself enough time to sleep, and I’d become dependent on the energy boost to get me through. No, I like the mental acuity and energy boost, but not as a substitute for healthy energy. Plus decaf doesn’t sit right with me.
@@vivanity9750 i completely agree with you! Imagine a world where we can learn of our own terms of field in study from Nursery to last year of high school!
This video explained caffeine, sleep, neuron receptors, why coffee keeps us awake, why it makes us feel better, why I feel grumpy when I have recently woken up (AKA I still have some adenosine docked in my neuro-receptors) or really wanna go to sleep, and why I'm perfectly right to tell my parents to stop overdosing on coffee. Thanks, TED-ed!
i was just getting curious about this as a person who doesn't drink coffee and wants to stay awake at 2 am. this was very informative yet simple to digest, thank you Ted-Ed!
Yes. And I'm not being funny about that. All coffee shops are drug dealers. So is your local grocery store with an over the counter medicine aisle, every bar, hookah bar, convenience store. Remember to be nice to your dealers.
this video accidentally makes an *amazing* explanation for adhd on a biochemical level. explaining the adenosine/dopamine connection, why stimulants are used as treatment, and how it works on a detailed level, explained in a very easy to understand way. I've used this countless times in school projects and explaining ADHD to friends and family.
Me: gets headache because of coffee abstinence TH-cam: recomends this I think TH-cam knows a bit too much about my life. Gotta find where the hidden camera is.
Something that the video glosses over is the fact that, caffeine blocks the receptors, but it doesn’t stop the adenosine from being formed. That means that it accumulates to higher and higher doses as time passes. So the withdrawal is even harder, since there is a huge amount of adenosine stored up waiting to be consumed. That mixed with bad sleeping habits/insomnia turns this little problem into a fight between the body trying to sleep and the habits trying to force you to drink more coffee to stop the sudden kick of adenosine from knocking you out, turning it into an addiction. Otherwise, the video is excellent and I’m glad people talk about caffeine and how it affects the body.
I was a caffeine addict before, consuming it every meal. I developed heart palpitations over the years, and headaches became more painful and I could feel pain on my sides where the kidneys are. My stomach feels ill all the time. I decided to quit, for about two weeks I was having cold extremities, I feel cold all the time, having anxieties, depression, palpitations. My heart and stomach became weak. Coffee has benefits but the contradictions outweighs them.
I gave up caffiene 5 years ago and immediately after going cold turkey I had horrible headache for 2 months. It was awful at first but now I'm so glad I gave it up.
My lesson after the mood disorder: never intake any stimulants again. They might help you to be alert at first but the consequences that you take after is bitter and long-lasting. Instead of relying on them, people should exercise in order to stimulate our bodies to produce dopamine. It plays a role of a natural stress-relieving substance. That's when you are happier and increase your own productivity.
This video was really informative. I felt that consuming too much caffeine can have the opposite result. But the fact that its consumption with a normal amount can have useful impacts for preventing some diseases such as Parkinson and some types of cancer really surprised me.
I didn't drink coffee once in my life and sleep right after, I drink it like normal people do, if I go to coffee shop or just a drink while watching TV and I feel nothing different at all for the rest of the day. My sister on the other hand, she goes from squidward to spongebob with just one cup of coffee
either you are on medication, have some mental disorder or your diet is crap. Man are you missing out on one of the best drug effects known to man kind.
Yo! Thanks a lot!! I was having a headache and I literallyl thought it was migraine...which I don't have at all!!! It was just that I stopped drinking coffe for awhile..!!! I feel so relieved now!!
I never drank coffee as an adolescent or young adult, I didn't like the flavor when I first tried it. Now, if I ever drink it I actually get put to sleep. My doctor said there could be multiple reasons for this but it really sucks for me because I don't have the advantage of just being able to drink coffee when I need more time for work/study.
This was one of the funniest TED-Ed videos I've watched! XD The faces the guy makes had me busting a gut. I also learned a lot! The anxiety aspect of caffeine is definitely something I can attest to as a college student who has drunk more than his fair share of coffee during all-night cram sessions. Not a pretty picture when you then try to get to sleep. :'s
Wow, this is really informative and it's explained in a way that makes it really easy to understand. I drink coffee every morning when I wake up because it helps me feel more alert and less tired. If I don't have my 'morning fix', I usually get grouchy and I can still feel tired hours after I wake up if I don't drink some coffee. I haven't found that I need to drink more over time, in fact, I prefer to have less coffee and more sugar (I'd say the coffee to sugar ratio is about 45:65) I don't drink coffee for its taste (I actually don't really like the taste of coffee), I put more sugar in than coffee which probably helps give me more energy as well. Also, side note, is anyone here from Jacksepticeye? He made a video about his genetics and health and he talked about his caffeine consumption and pointed out this video.
My last caffeinated drink was in Jan 2013. I’ve never looked back. A few years later I decided that sugar water decaf soft drinks were unnecessary. So my last soft drink was Jan 2016. I’ve never looked back and never felt better. It’s possible and it’s worth it.
I can probably count the amount of sodas I've had since 2006 on one hand, plus I never use sugar in my coffee. Though these were not a decision based on health, rather I just never liked the taste of soda in general, especially coca-cola, which I never drank even as a kid if offered it, I rather had water. But coffee I enjoy for the taste (I get no effect from caffeine for some reason), but usually no more than 1 a day, and sometimes I don't even have one at all. I would definitely recommend cutting down on caffeine and sugar intake though, they're poisons when consumed in the volumes that most people do these days without even realising it.
@@aldobonaso3481 Thanks for sharing. They really can be poisons when used in excess (even if you don’t realize its excess) and our bodies function just fine without them. I can’t believe how many stories I’ve heard of people suddenly healing from “chronic” illnesses or health issues that the doctors couldn’t figure out, all because they finally cut out sugar or caffeine intake. Especially diet sodas with artificial sweeteners. Those are the worst offenders.
I had an epiphany. When we digest food, it gets turned into ATP which releases adenosine. That’s why we sometimes feel tired after eating. That’s so cool.
Also ATP is made from cellular respiration and gives us energy, and it says here that whenever adenosine triphosphate is broken down (aka it becomes only adenosine) we get sleepy, so is this why whenever we use up energy (use up/break down? ATP) we feel tired?
Never had a more persistant headache than when I went to stay with my aunt who didn't think to tell me she was still drinking decaf having gotten used to it after having her latest baby. Couldn't work out where my thumping headache came from, suffered for two days until we worked it out and a box of Earl Grey tea fixed everything. For reference, I drink 4-6 cups of tea a day, probably more if I'm home all day.
Sometimes I have an energy drink about 15-20 min before hitting the gym. On the way there, I've recently noticed that once it kicks in, I'm not necessarily filled with energy but I'm happier. Music feels and sounds better as well. A few days ago I thought to myself, "What if the caffeine is really just a dopamine enhancer?!" And here we have it. Stay curious. Sometimes it'll bring the answers right to you!
I loved the animation, very well done guys !! Just one correction... Caffeine doesn't stimulate the nervous system, what's really happening, caffeine block the relaxing mechanism for limited time,. So, caffeine won't wake you up, you just won't be able to relax.
I had some coffee a few hours ago...and I don’t really like it, but I keep drinking it to keep me awake and now I REALLY, REALLY want another mug...when it’s finished I want another. I’m only a kid really...I think I’m addicted!
Last week i watched one video on TedEd and now I know things Which I would have never thought of knowing or I didn't even know such things exist 🤣🤣... Love this process
Caffeine and Cannabis have a long history of use as a synergistic combination. Cannabis increases dopamine in the brain which supercharges the effect of caffeine's dopamine lifting feeling. There are many account of Ephedra being mixed with Cannabis in ancient history and it explains why I love the combination so much. You feel super alert yet stimulated and happy. Too much makes you feel extra forgetful and ADHD though
After drinking coffee, I feel more sleeping in the first hour. That is, I feel more tired and can almost immediately sleep. And caffeine only affects after that first hour. Can someone explain?
I have basically quit coffee. I switched to matcha green tea because of its antioxidants and noticed long-lasting energy and doesn't increase my anxiety like many types of coffee has done.
Really simple terms here. Basically it helps your body run out of energy with something to do with calories so after the caffeine uses up the energy you can sleep.
@@tammeydavis9750 is that actually why? I don't drink coffee, but even smaller amounts of caffeine from teas make me tired. But then might keep me awake 12 hours later when I'm trying to sleep
if you had explained caffeine’s affect on those who suffer from adhd... personally when i drink coffee or chai or consume other caffeine items i tend to feel calm and slowed
Great video; to comment on the part about caffeine being banned as a performance enhancing supplement... the cutoff level still allows for responsible use and positive effects for competitive athletes. They place the cutoff well beyond a point of diminishing returns where the drug begins to take on more harmful effects. It's basically protection from overdose.
I don't think coffee and many of my friends find this weird, as if drinking coffee is something everyone does. I avoid coffee because the negative effects, just like they are listed in the video - anxiety, sweating, high blood pressure, diarrhea, increased urination - are all present and very strong with me. People say they drink 5-6 coffees per day - the maximum I've had was 2 and I almost had to go to hospital after that. I've tried drinking just a bit of it, maybe replacing it with green tea, but in the end a glass of water or juice just works better for me.

@@tammeydavis9750 is that actually why? I don't drink coffee, but even smaller amounts of caffeine from teas make me tired. But then might keep me awake 12 hours later when I'm trying to sleep
Who’s here for school
I'm literally addicted to the narrator's voice.. He's got the most beautiful voice I've ever heard in my life..!!!
if you had explained caffeine’s affect on those who suffer from adhd... personally when i drink coffee or chai or consume other caffeine items i tend to feel calm and slowed
That moment when I'm addicted to coffee .I always have headaches without my coffee in the morning and evening
Cool, so all I need to do to stay alert is get addicted to caffeine, get anxiety, quit, hope anxiety goes away, and I'm good?
Great video; to comment on the part about caffeine being banned as a performance enhancing supplement... the cutoff level still allows for responsible use and positive effects for competitive athletes. They place the cutoff well beyond a point of diminishing returns where the drug begins to take on more harmful effects. It's basically protection from overdose.
What a brilliant way of explaining pharmacology
this is something else, simple, understandable and most important not fast speech
1:54 So, caffeine does not help you stay awake, it prevents you from falling asleep.
And preventing you from falling asleep, helps you staying awake.
Caffeine is the opposite for me, I tend to be sleepy
ah yes, caffeine; the drug that lifts up your mustache 2:25
I don't think coffee and many of my friends find this weird, as if drinking coffee is something everyone does. I avoid coffee because the negative effects, just like they are listed in the video - anxiety, sweating, high blood pressure, diarrhea, increased urination - are all present and very strong with me. People say they drink 5-6 coffees per day - the maximum I've had was 2 and I almost had to go to hospital after that.
I've tried drinking just a bit of it, maybe replacing it with green tea, but in the end a glass of water or juice just works better for me.
U r friends are sugar patients and they don't know that 😂
One of your best videos.
