    It's interesting that the "most active bike" had the best climbing performance here. Goes to show you that a high anti-squat isn't everything, especially if you're climbing in the PNW. The trend has been towards stiff and progressive bikes lately but there's a strong argument to be made for more active suspension, especially if you aren't racing or hunting KOMs.

      I was going to argue that 'best climbing performance' is more complicated than being able to more easily traverse difficult terrain. But a better ability to even REACH the top is obviously key.
      To finish first, first you must finish.
      I tend to think of climbing as either efficient or not. But you're right.

    The Trance X winning makes sense. Active suspension bikes are the best for climbing junky, technical sections because they find traction and hep you keep your footing. Climbing on xc ski trails or roads and climbing on tech should honestly be two different categories. Personally I don’t care how a bike climbs on fire roads because I don’t do boring climbs. I always take the bike trail up.

  • @Hardcaslte
    @Hardcaslte 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Do any climbs favor hard tails?" Anything more than a smooth surface and a full suspension wins, I don't know how pro XC racers use hard tails on the gnarly courses they have to race now. I learned the misconception of "hard tails climb better because more power gets to the tire." True, right up until the rear tire hits literally anything. Root, Rock, slight bump in the dirt, anything that can ram into the tire makes the bike stop dead, any bump in the trail bounces you off the seat, they're a bitch to use for climbs.

      @bananasstuff3344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The OEM tires are part of the bike...

    • @dtolios
      @dtolios 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bananasstuff3344 yes, but are also a consumable which will wear out and/or might be swapped even at the point of sale (at least for LBS purchases). Tires are also region specific: a tire that might work great in Sedona or SoCal might be weak in Squamish and v/v. This is why tests - imho correctly - often go with control tires. Yes, this is called a value bike comparison, but with prices varying 50% to...250%, i think results are skewed. If we were talking a much stricter price variation having "just" $1200 ΗΤs +/- 10%, yes, what is OEM is important, but if I was to buy a Ripley AF and whatnot, I'd probably swap a tire to work with the area/season I'm working with.
      What we saw here was pretty much enduro rear tires beating faster rolling trail & XC tires over wet roots.

    • @bananasstuff3344
      @bananasstuff3344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dtolios I'd still say that it was a review of the bike.

    • @dtolios
      @dtolios 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bananasstuff3344 overall I agree, the field test was informative. But if you go through it, you will see the disparity: e.g. nowhere in their casual discussion was the Trance X or the Rift Zone or the Growler the "above average pedallers" etc, perhaps to an extend exactly because those came with the "more enduro" / knobbier/meatier rear tires, which ofc are a pain to pedal with all-day, but would give you the edge @ rougher / technical short climbs.
      I don't try to invalidate the overall review, just the specific technical climb part that is too much tire dependant.

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dtolios pretty sure they said the rift zone had a lot of xc roots and was super efficient. Makes sense it did so well. Plus the tires that come on that bike are slow as hell, if anything the tires were a disadvantage to it.

    Good test. But this is why I prefer a triple crank with a little granny ring. One can crawl up slowly with loads of torque. 27 gears are the business...;-)

    • @creepingjesus5106
      @creepingjesus5106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pretty much what I was thinking. Given that my local area features many goat climbs which I tackle with my half-ton 3x7 bike, I'm in no hurry to 'upgrade' to any 1x setup. In fact, I might yet get a good old Megarange just to be sure!

    • @creepingjesus5106
      @creepingjesus5106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spiffpilot2589 I realise quite a few gears are redundant: 7th on the granny ring, and 1st on the big ring are practically inaccessible on mine, just for a start; quite a few are near enough duplicated too. Less weight, less bits to go wrong...I get all that, but...
      I drove trucks for a living, I know equally well there's no substitute for dropping down gears and keeping the engine in the sweet spot. In this case, the engine is of course, me, and I find I have better traction control with more options. The least I can see myself doing is a 2x.

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With 1x12 you're getting even lower gears then 3x8, plus less weight. And at a certain point you spin too fast and loose traction anyway.

    • @geraldmaybebaby1585
      @geraldmaybebaby1585 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a ten speed that came on a bike I bought. The low gear is not low enough. The high gear, the peddles top out at about 24 mph. And is frustrating downhill. It is only 300 gram or so lighter than my XT triple set up. Me old marin quad Tara crawls up narly trails with ease.
      Maybe a 12 or 13 speed would be an improvement on the mid range 10 I have. But personally, not impressed with 1X systems. In Yorkshire. There are hills. Lots of hills. Often the 10 speed has me walking up hill. The marin never lets me down. And for riding all day. The triple, covers everything.

    • @creepingjesus5106
      @creepingjesus5106 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geraldmaybebaby1585 100% hear you. I know the hills of Yorks, Lancs and the Peaks from my truck driving days! Up here in Fife is a good bit flatter, but the climbs are often violently steep, on thick grass and slimy clay, so I'm happy to stick with my 'too many' gears! Besides that, old tech is cheaper and I can always lob on the old MegaRange set...51t ftw, ten minute job.
      Mine tops out about 21mph which is a pain in the arse on road, and the frame's stable up to 30. More gears please!

    Question... Just started riding trail/DH bikes last years, still learning from it and having a blast at same time, my question is: Why don't you get off the seat to pedal uphill??? She is also looking down at her front wheel the whole climb instead of slightly more forward, not saying she isn't a good climber, but I don't think it's a fair comparison because the bikes can likely climb much better than she may feel comfortable with. @@slowspoke1027 I agree witht he same arguments. For the grawler to climb that well, the giant named first and the XC-ish Norco and BMC being so far apart goes to show how they literally cared only off of grip (tires) and handling (short stem).

    • @slowspoke1027
      @slowspoke1027 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ZhengZL69 I have a growler and I can guarantee I'd be much better at climbing on literally any other steeper angled hardtail, I've only ridden one other bike uphill so far but the difference in climb performance is ultimately down to how skilled you are as a rider. All this said, it's still fair to make said video because it has some value; the tires and setups of the bikes do matter quite a bit for harder technical climbing, and having a slightly less skilled rider hosting the videos helps to demonstrate how the average rider is likely to handle the bikes on a climb. Mike is an extremely proficient rider, and it's fair to say he'd likely be able to do this specific climb a bit easier than she managed to. However without being there and trying that climb yourself it's hard to make judgements, seeing as it may be much trickier than video makes it seem 😃
      P.S. I want to emphasize that nobody should be hating on her climbing techniques, everyone is out there trying to have a good time, and I'm sure she was trying hard to make it up those climbs.
      I do feel that it would maybe have been interesting to have them do 5 tries on each bike to see if she could have learned the climb lines a bit better on each frame before moving to the next one, since it's easy to hit one root and be tossed (and that isn't a fair judgement of the bikes performance).

    No offense to Sarah but I think this trial depends more on Skill than the bikes. Although, having rear suspension is an advantage ( helps generate more traction) choosing the smoother line is probably the priority. It also depends on the person's physical traits, meaning, one person may perform better on another bike and vice versa. I would probably have some issues myself with that climb - it seems like there is a rock garden among root, etc. which I know can be a pain!

At the beginning of the test I totally thought the ibis was the best and wanted that one. I'd far rather go with the trance, Marshall, or rift zone over the Ripley now.
