It seemed like he was purposely choosing harder lines to stress test the bikes, but if he missed the harder line he would just keep going. Very weird test.
Pinkbike does this all the time, it's basically a paid ad for special-ed bikes these reviews are as non biased as an apple salesman recommending you an apple product

Absolutely! Our next Field Test will incorporate a bunch of new enduro/trail bikes.

@@pinkbike I would be pleased if Grim Donut was in every test. Even if it starts to get a bad reputation, if it beats anything...ever, that's rather significant.
The 2019 field test had the "impossible climb" which I believe only the Trek Top Fuel cleared it.
It would also be funny if the Grim donut beat most of the bikes in the field test, because then you would suddenly see the entire market shift to grim donut level of geo haha

His smoothest and most confident ascent, really, was on foot.
It would be easier with some actually grippy tires on there... I get that they are 'XC' bikes but I never understood putting what are basically slicks on a mountain bike.
Yet that’s what they race on. Go figure.

On anything that's not deep mud, tyre tread almost doesn't matter. The right rubber compound on a semi slick will grip as well or better than a really aggressive knobbly tyre on hard surfaces. Half of the problem with knobbly tyres is that the tyre walks sideways cornering on hard surfaces as the tread blocks flex.
Yeah Racing Ralphs were probably not the best control tire for BC crazy tech climbs. Maybe Rekons or Ardent Race would've fared better.
Please bring a good XC rider next time to show us how it's done
What did we learn here? One, it's fun to watch someone try to make that climb. Two, it's about 90% line choice and momentum and 10% which bike so don't use this as a shopping tool...

Seems inconclusive. Still fun to watch. Would love to see a further test... Two or three different riders taking each bike up three times. Might take a few days of testing but would be far more compelling with a final rating for each as well as similar tires throughout.

I love the root, the rock, the sick climb you know will fail but that's why we suffer thinking maybe this one time it will all come together against all odds and you surprise yourself and no one's there to validate your achievements!
Maybe the forgotten lessons from Nino are more the issue than the bikes. Great video and props to Levy!

May I suggest a higher gear, it usually help me to both not spin out as easy and also keep speed over the slippery stuff.

so what does this test conclude ? that a random joke design climbs as good as the most overpriced specialized manufacturer out there (see what i did there)
Exactly. It's not about the bike. It's where we are in this age, "Yeah, you beat me up and down but my bike cost ten times as much as yours. I win"
no, this test only proved that:
1. it's about your skillset
2. it's about your legs
3. it's about line choice and the only reason why he made it up with the epic evo is because he nailed the line, but he failed the same line with other bikes and didn't even try again and when he did he failed and gave up again
...so the test was absolutely pointless and proved nothing really
it's just a fun test it doesn't mean anything obviously
This just proves how much R&D is actually required to make a bike. He could have made a less progressive bike and it would have been 99% as capable as the new specialized.
I mean to be fair Specialized has one of the biggest R&D teams and budgets in the industry. Also, their bikes consistently rank top three or five in most UCI races. I'm not saying that their bikes are superior to other bikes however in this case the beefier tires, geo, and extra travel in the rear probably influenced the results. To be fair the epic evo's are priced pretty fairly if you compare to similar models (not comparing direct to consumer brands like canyon), 6k for an epic evo gets you a full carbon frame, carbon wheels with dt350 internals (star ratchet upgrade), X01, Sid selct+ and sid luxe suspension. Hell, even the evo comp is pretty on par for other 4k 120mm xc bikes.
Specialized , Treks or Canyon? Which one overall would be a best buy combining comfort and speed ?

He just can't climb all that well. You can see he only likes to climb to be able to get to the descents
