I could listen to Dean and Bing all day long. They are so fun to watch......Dean always looks the happiest, when he's singing.......especially with Bing.
everyday I listen to Dean and Bing and Al Jolson Anne Frank and Sammy this was when times were wonderful men if it would only come back again I would give my right arm to have them back making us all so happy
Fantastic to see these iconic performers giving it the best of the best. I remember when it was announced that Bing Crosby had died of a heart attack whilst out on the golf course.Kinda felt as though I had lost a good friend. No more entertainers of that calibre anymore. Just vulgarity thats supposed to be entertainment to the druggies ! Sad world we live in.
While done by legends in the their own rights (both of whom I Greatly admire), it actually shows the power of Jolson's significance. Their wonderful tribute is not even close to the actual Jolson performances of any of the tunes presented. FWIW
+TheLeondo1 To render anything close to what a Jolson performance was like would have been impossible. However, I think it's interesting that the audience bursts into applause as Dean went to one knee. Shows at this time Jolson's legacy was still alive and respected. That would change drastically shortly after, to where the name "Jolson," was anathema.
I suspect both realized there was no gain from trying to put the Jolson energy into their performance; better to do it in their own styles than appear even more lame by attempting something that no one but Jolson could have pulled off.
Too bad a lot of people who watch this clip never heard of Jolsen or any of these songs. But I have. Great clip and two great performers. Too bad there are no more left today....
How wasn't he a nice guy? As early as 1911, he fought for black rights. His movie "The Jazz Singer" defied white supremacy and racial bigotry by introducing African American music to white audiences worldwide.
jolson hated kids just like dear old bing did by beating them up untill they grew up and could hit back and dear old al never fought for black rights i wouldnt call my mammy black music
He was a stern father like any other father in the 30s and by standards of the 30s he did a normal amount. Today, we would consider any father from the 30s to be abusive. His son Gary wrote the book shortly after Mommy Dearest came out and another brother denied that Bing had abused them in such harsh manners. The other brother said that he was a stern father but not a monster. There is no evidence that Bing Crosby beat his kids except for the story of one son that is discredited by the other.
Two who really loved Jolson. Bing called him his idol and Dean did an album saluting Jolson and his music, and so often on stage would sing portions of songs in the Jolson manner.
Jeff Lipinski : This is really something An "Homage" to Al Jolson. But whoever not heard Jolson sing you must say that she or he ain´t heard nothing yet ¡ WOW !
So true Steinwaygrande, the music today is all about swearing, the old days they didn't have to swear at all as they were great at what they did with their voices.
Charles Taylor - Steven Torrey may have phrased his comment in-artfully but Bing and Dinos version, while a great tribute, are sung in their own style, which lacked the electricity and verve of Jolson's rendition. That's not a knock on them - its a statement about the greatness of Jolson. There is a REASON why Bing idolized Jolie and had him as a guest on his radio show so many times.
Sure agree on that one; only Jolie could add the dynamism on these songs although Dean and Bing done well! As you say it testifies to,the greatness of Jolson
(2 years ago) To aspiring entertainers: GRAD SCHOOL. Note that their intonation as singers is pitch-perfect. Note that each of them, members of two of the "loosest" comedy teams in film history (Martin & Lewis, Hope & Crosby), actually start to improvise toward the end. Note that Jolson, the First White Guy With Soul, infuses everything they do.
OMG i'd rather listen to these two on an old, beat up recording than any of the rancorous, egotistical singers of today on an excellent recording. Alas, Babylon.
Bing was first. Then all of the other crooners were inspired by him. I miss those voices like butter--Crosby, Como, Bennet, Martin, Monroe....I hope their music comes back. What's out there, except for Buble and Groban, isn't even music. It's a cacophany.
FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!!!!! All three of them Bing, Dean, and the songs of The Immortal Al Jolson! I'm not sure, just guessing that the term immortal started with Babe Ruth and carried to Jolson, correct me someone, because that is a guess. I figured Ruth died before Jolson.
+WILLIAM HYDE Bing was in his early 60's here; Dean, Perry, Frank all molded themselves after their mentor/idol---Bing. He's the pre-eminent one, make no mistake. Dean is great; Bing is the master.
I believe one is just as good as the other and they were both unique I can tell you that. Also Dean never really sang seriously it was just his style to use more warmth and natural vibrato. When he did it was on movies, sometimes in vegas or maybe on an Italian song like Innamorata.
Well, not quite as bad as that, Steven. Actually, Clive Baldwin could sing Jolson better than Dean and the Bingle. So could Norman Brooks and Tony Babino. Jolson was the greatest entertainer ever. Still I like to hear other great singers singing his songs, even in their own style. That Charles boy, he got a big mout.
Here Jolson first... Then you see how weak this sounds.... Not knocking Bing @Dean but don't sing Jolson songs cause you will only be'' a mediocre copy of another man's genius' '🥰
Jolson was a belter..a voice for the unamplified theatres he played in...Bing was much more modern...together with Louis Armstrong the first true master of the microphone and more subtle and conversational...something Jolson never was...so you are comparing apples with oranges here
@@henriettahenson it might be wise to use the words " mediocre" and " genius" sparingly here...I do appreciate Jolson and his pep sometimes but the facts of their performing styles and how they grew into that are well documented and are more than just an opinion....you don't knock a surgeon for not being a good dentist and vice versa do you...?
Any man who can sing with Crosby is top drawer.
I could listen to Dean and Bing all day long. They are so fun to watch......Dean always looks the happiest, when he's singing.......especially with Bing.

Wonderful tribute to the great Al Jolson from two very talented entertainers
Dino is so at ease with Bing. Great duet. He owes so much -- as they all do --to Bing. Jolie was one in a million.
Dean and Bing sing medley of songs. They were great.
I love all the oldies, was raised with all these guys :)
Love them both

2 MUSICAL GIANTS SINGING AL JOLSON !!

Makes you miss Jolson. Fitting that two greats would pay tribute to the greatest entertainer we have ever had. The original great. WE LOVE YOU AL!
Two of the greatest who have ever lived
these 2 guys truly liked each other.
Dean Martin Bing Crosby can sing so cool 😎 together ❤ real class ❤
Deano looks especially happy today.
Wonderful tribute to Jolie by Dean and Bing.

Great duets.
I liked how Dean looked happy when he sang.

fantastic
Especially meaningful because Jolson did a number of duets with Crosby.

Shirley Clarke totally agree Shirley, i love both of these as singers but their voices sound weak and insipid next to the great jolson
Sorry Shirley, Elvis took that spot.

SUBLIME
Not a patch on Al Jolson,
Not a patch on the real thing.
Very surprised to see this tbh, and there is probably $ involved somewhere along the lines.
Can you post the whole show?
You ain't just whistling Dixie.
It'd be kinda hard to get him there, since he'd been dead since 1950. :P
I actually think Dino was the better of the two singers.

Ok close second. He's better than Sinatra anyway.
+WILLIAM HYDE Dream on, pal. Love Dean, but he's not in Sinatra's class.
+BigBingFan And Bing's idol? Jolson.
+LazlosPlane
He is absolutely in Sinatra's class. Dean could do things, vocally that Sinatra could not do...and vice versa.

Landon McNew If you think Dean was as good as Bing, you're not listening carefully enough.
Elvis
Sinatra tried too hard ...
At least they had the good taste not to do "My Mammy".
Al Jolson sang these same songs with verve and zing... These two sound more like zombies from the walking dead...
Well, not quite as bad as that, Steven. Actually, Clive Baldwin could sing Jolson better than Dean and the Bingle. So could Norman Brooks and Tony Babino. Jolson was the greatest entertainer ever. Yes, they are kind of "mailing it in," but don't compare Dean or especially Bing to Brooks or Baldwin as SINGERS. You're gonna lose that comparison.
Deano is making a very good appearance, Bing is just mailing it in.
Here Jolson first... Then you see how weak this sounds.... Not knocking Bing @Dean but don't sing Jolson songs cause you will only be'' a mediocre copy of another man's genius' '🥰
