    Thank you SO MUCH for this video!!!! I get so frustrated by the low quality ingredients in pet food and I’m constantly reviewing the ingredients list before purchasing. It can be so overwhelming but your video has really helped me to better understand what to look for a what to avoid. I would 100% LOVE a deeper dive into this! It’s something that people aren’t talking about and need to be aware of so that our babies can be healthy, happy and thriving and a part of our family for many, many, many years!!!

    My little dog has experienced horrendous skin problems with huge amounts of veterinarian intervention to no avail. Then I looked at the label for a can of Science Diet that she had been "prescribed". It's nothing but chemicals! Not only that, she is allergic to chicken and the food had chicken in it. I was told it was micro encapsulated and therefore would not make her break out! Finally, a month ago, I began to cook for her. She eats ground turkey sauteed in coconut oil combined with cooked sweet potatoes, carrots and beets. Just in the past few days her skin is completely clear for the first time since March 4th. Honestly it is cheaper and I know what my baby is getting - no chemicals, no crap.

      That's awesome!!!! Just make sure she's getting all the vitamins and minerals she needs. Many people cook for their pets but don't think about things like that. People end up hurting their pets more because of it.

    Thank you for this video.
    That said, I used to feed my dog grain-free but then I read there were reports by vets that they saw dogs having heart problems with such a diet. Last I recall, the FDA was still researching it, but it was some ingredient (I believe related to legumes/peas protein) in the grain-free causing the issues since they were eating it daily vs in moderation.
    Apparently it is called canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).
    Also, don't feed your pet any chicken from China.

    The best dog food at whole foods is steve's real food in the freezer session (usually by Amy's frozen meals). Frozen raw. Grass fed meat. No fillers. I am not sure if other whole foods have it, but every Seattle whole foods has it.

    Hi Bobby, love that you did this video. I’m a pet professional for just about 17 years. Just a heads up the 4 proteins that cause the most issues in dogs ie allergies, skin issues, and stomach issues are Beef, chicken, turkey, and lamb. These are important for people to avoid if their dogs have these issues. Stick with proteins that dogs would normally get in the wild. Best is fish, bison, rabbit...stuff like that. Again thanks for the details and vid on the rest of the ingredients.

      What’s your recommendation?

    • @qtmelina
      @qtmelina 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jody thomas just make sure they the protein is one of the wild options. I use Nutri Source pure vita salmon and pea limiter ingredient grain free food. However just for dogs white fish formula is really good.

    • @tinaleighton6390
      @tinaleighton6390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most dogs that are fit a raw diet have no issue with those proteins. The key to any dogs diet is to very the proteins, don’t just feed fish or just feed chicken etc. Mix it up and change protein sources often.

      @shaund9759 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justine9980 Any good vet will always recommend what is best for the patient, and that is the majority of us. I am a veterinarian and I stay pretty on top of the recent surrounding diet. The fact is, around 1% of canines have a true grain allergy. There is no benefit to feeding a grain-free diet. Will every dog that is fed a GF diet going to come down with heart disease? Not by a long shot. But what we do know, is that there is a link to Heart Disease (most commonly Dilated Cardiomyopathy) in patients who are on these diets. Recent studies have linked the culprit to legumes, more specifically pea protein that many GF diets are filled with. There are still ongoing studies happening now. But while we are figuring it out exactly, and since there is no BENEFIT, we don't recommend them. Now I don't shame or come down hard on my clients who do choose these diets, I just make them aware of the risks. Most vets do not recommend only what food we are selling. Food sales are our lowest profit margins actually. Hill's is a great company. Do I suggest every patient of mine is fed Hill's? No. I recommend Costco brand (grain-inclusive) to many of my pet parents. We recommend what is best for our patients. The reason we tend to recommend the "evil empire foods" as I like to call them (Hill's, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Purina ProPlan, Iams) is that these companies have been around forever (for a reason) and they have veterinary nutritionists on staff and do very extensive food trials) That is it. We go where the science is, that's how we were trained. But it is not to get a kickback from any certain food company. Obviously, I cannot speak for every single practicing veterinarian out there, but I can speak to MOST of us.

    Cool video idea but I think this is spreading misinformation. Dog food is so much more than organic, non-gmo, or inflammatory oils. Please disclaimer to see a Veterinary Nutritionist to see what’s best for your pet. I would hate to see someone take your advice and that not be the best option for their pet. And generally, if you want your pet to be healthy I would NOT even look at kibble. Kibble is cooked at such high temps that it can make the food carcinogenic. So even the best kibble on the market will still be cooked at dangerous temperatures. The best diet is a balanced homemade diet or raw diet depending on what works for the pup of course!

You might want to check out Karen Becker if you don’t follow her already as she has a lot of information on this topic.

    Bobbie, a man named Pollock has a blog on TH-cam. He is a Type 2 diabetic and compared Ezekial bread with Trader Joe's white bread. He ate both breads over two days and showed us his blood sugar readings. No significant difference was found. Both breads adversely affected his blood sugar readings. He reported we shouldn't be led by wrappers as to what to eat if you are diabetic. Thought you should know this.

    All I have ever fed my14 year old dog since she was less than 6 months old was grain free dog food. My vet recommended it because of crystals in her urine. First Evo, then Acana and mostly Orijen brands. My dog was diagnosed with an enlarged heart 3 years ago and now is on enalapril and vetmedin medications daily. My vet also told me that the "grain free dog food" study wasn't conclusive. However, I do give my dog a daily taurine supplement just in case.

    Gosh, I'm so glad you guys have this really great pet food over there! However, for my cat I have gone back to basics, I feed him raw, which is how they were intended to eat from the start. It took a couple of months to get him used to it, but now he eats it happily. He is 9 years young and even the flabby skin by his hind legs is getting firmer again! The raw food I give him is specially made for cats and it contains a small amount of raw bone which helps keep his teeth clean. Of course there are days he prefers mouse, so then he catches his own raw food!

      @@gingerlilly5496 Hi, to begin with I live in the UK, and the company that makes my cat food does not export. However, for any UK pet lovers here: the company I use is called Honeys, they are based in Wiltshire. They personally know the farmers where their meat comes from, and even if it's not organic, it's always GMO-free, and as close to organic as they can get. It's very expensive here to get organic status, so a lot of farmers don't get it. They make the most fantastic working dog food as well. This has vegetables in - the cat food doesn't - and again, they are in regular, personal contact with their suppliers, who are all local to their manufacturing plant in and around Wiltshire. Truly a fabulous pet food company. They have their own in-house vets too, and they are always ready to give advice, even if you never buy from them. Ace! They deliver the food frozen in fully recyclable boxes and they are now in the process of working out how they can pack the meat in fully recyclable materials as well.

      Ginger Lilly Stella and chewies, primal, Bravo. Or get yourself a grinder and grind up chicken, turkey, and Cornish game hens. Keep the bones in the Cornish game hens and the chicken and just grind it up. Turkey is usually too hard to grind with the bones. Add a few sardines in there once in a while. There are many good brands out there look up Raw cat food and he will find them. Must be 100% meat bones and organs. No veggies, no carbs. Your cat is a carnivore.

    I worked at a locally owned specialty pet food store and learned a lot about pet nutrition. First off the best thing for your pet would be a raw food diet: raw meat mixed with some vegges. We carried Blue Buffalo but that was more because it's a well known name brand. All their food has chicken in it and a lot of filler. Often beef and chicken will be a main cause for a dog's allergies.
    Zignature is a good brand as they are a limited ingredient and grain-free option. Fromm is another good brand as they have been around for over 100 years and never have had a recall on their dry food, and actually were the ones that first came out with pet food for set life stages. They have grain and grain-free options. It's what I feed my dog.
    Diamond Naturals was the cheapest brand the store offered. The food had grains but only grains like rice and oats. Diamond also makes Taste of the Wild which is grain-free, and I know one of their formulas is potato free. They then do have a grain formula for Taste of the Wild called Ancient Grains which as grains like quinoa and chia seeds.
    There are plenty of other great brands but this comment has gone on long enough.

      Agree on your best option. Kibble is only safe if they have legitimate testing for BPA & heavy metals by an independent lab with acceptable levels. They all are contaminated and cause heart & other issues in my opinion because it is not ILLEGAL for them to do it. Fromm 2019 - As you may be aware on June 27th 2019, the FDA issued an updated press release with a summary of their ongoing investigation into the potential connection between certain diets and cases of canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Fromm, along with many other pet food manufacturers, is listed as one of the pet food brands included in complaints filed by pet owners with dogs or cats diagnosed with DCM.

    Not sure if anyone else here has already commented about it but...Grain free diets in dogs have been linked to heart disease, specifically canine dilated cardiomyopathy. Peas, lentils, other legumes and potatoes are bad for dogs. Please reach out to a vet and research this. People really trust you, as do I, and I think in this situation more research should be done. First, I want to say how much I appreciate everything you do and I have been following you for about a year now and have learned endless amounts of awesome info! Thank you so much for that. For the first time however, I need to say something about this video. My husband and I got 2 shih tzu puppies in January this year and I drove myself and my husband insane with all the research I was doing. I mean absolutely no disrespect saying this, but I really think you should do some more research into this subject before you make a video for all your followers to see. You are steering people in the wrong direction with dry dog food. All of it is absolute crap. Wet canned food is a step up from dry kibble, but still not great.
    ALL kibble is processed, no matter how good the ingredients are, at a super high heat, which yes, kills all the bad crap, but it is also killing the good crap. Then, a lot of companies will add synthetic vitamins and minerals back into the kibble. And so many of these synthetic things come from China. And I don't know about the people following you that have pets, but I for one, will never, ever give my girls anything that comes from China. Do we all remember how they tried to kill our pets a little more than 10 years ago? A lot of these foods' bags say they are made in the USA but do you realize how many ingredients are "sourced" from China? They conveniently do not need to say that on the bag! You've got to do a little digging but that info is out there.
    "Meal" in food is NOT GOOD!! It can mean many things, including this -- "This is cooked in a process called rendering: grinding the chicken down and cooking it at very high temperatures for several hours to make a powder or . And because legally can contain 4D animals (dead, dying, diseased or disabled chickens), it is not permitted for human consumption."
    Vets push their Science Diet crap. They do not know any better! Again, do some research!! Many vets are taught the absolute minimum about diet in school. It is up to US to do better for our animals!
    I could go on and on and on about the endless misinformation but please, just do some research. It's all out there. Follow Dr. Karen Becker, Rodney Habib, Dr. John Robb with Protect the Pets, Mercola. Watch Pet Fooled. If that doesn't absolutely disgust you then I don't what else to say.
    Again, I appreciate everything you do and the info you give has been life changing for my husband and I but this is not it.

      Amy Andrews - excellent post Amy. I wish more people took the time to do their research on pet food. Also we should not forget about the recalls that happened on Hill’s pet Food that ended up killing many animals unnecessarily due to high amounts of vitamin D in their vitamin pre-mix that they added to their pet food. Your suggestions on who to follow are excellent as well. Thank you for helping to educate pet parents.

    • @LoveIsElectroMusic
      @LoveIsElectroMusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said, more folks need to educate themselves on this topic. Kibble is not good for any animals health wise in the long term. Unfortunately, our society is based upon convenience and that is something that kibble provides. Nothing convient is ever healthy in the long run, this is why processed foods exist, for convience. These big brand animal kibble companies are NOT looking out for the consumer whatsoever, but only their own greed and $. Google about pet recalls and read all the sad first hand stories. What is worse most folks don't understand the horrendous side effects of giving animals food sourced from China leaving pets dieing, yet companies ARE STILL selling these toxic foods/snacks. I wish society would dig a little more on this topic to understand. In the long run, i rather pay a higher price of raw organic dog food, and goats milk for probiotic, (Answers Pet food) and keep my pup out of the vets office knowing he is healthy and loving life long term, rather then to pay $$$$ for all the vet visits for poor health, I'm just sayin.
