    Awesome stuff Wes, look forward to your video each week. As an aside, your framing for filming and the way you carry yourself talking during the video makes it feel like just sitting across the table having a coffee or beer, and just chatting about running. It's really really well done. And the Q&A, thanks for letting us pick your brain, it's really interesting to hear how you approach things and what works for you. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this content.

    Really appreciate your answer to Q2 here, the one on pacing. I ran my first official 50-miler last spring and while I finished it in a respectable time, I really didn't enjoy it and didn't feel that I was in good enough shape to participate (although obviously I was). But this year I'm signed up for a 50k, two 50-milers and a 100k and I'd like to enjoy each event at least part of the time, and I'm going to try to make that my goal and forget about finishing in the top 50% or whatever. So thanks for that, Wes, and for all the other insights you're providing with this series! Come on over to Port Angeles for a run sometime!

    Nice down week of training! I find that every 3ish weeks I'll naturally take an "unplanned" down week, which is usually a combination of listening to my body and just taking care of life. As always, love the content! Keep inspiring! Any update on the unnamed 100 miler in June?

      Thanks for watching, I love that you enjoy the series.
      Maybe you're not on the mailing list? We announced several weeks ago there will not be a permitted event this year, the USFS wasn't going to be able to get it done in time (we're already way too late to open registration for a June event) and we also really need to find some sponsors. A few runners asked about running it as a fat ass, though, which we are planning to do. I'm happy about that because we're changing the course direction and also 18ish miles somewhere new, and this will give me a chance to run the new course too.

    Wes...keep up all the good work! I ran Backcountry Rise last year based off of your video! Be curious to hear on the next Q&A how you approach layering for races when temperatures can vary significantly over a 24+ hour period. Do you typically utilize drop bags for warmer clothing as you approach evening? Thank you.

I’m in a training block as well and like to see what others are doing to see what I can learn and apply to my own training. Thanks for sharing.

    Just found your channel and really enjoy the training vlogs and Q&A. Great race videos as well. I actually entered Ancient Lakes 50K this year because of your video. Speaking of Ancient Lakes, any insights on just how cold it might be? A bit concerned about how to dress. Any info would be greatly appreciated 🇨🇦

      You can see my breath as I walked to the start line. th-cam.com/video/sMXWx2lmc8s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MFQfvrr81l1XfHMX&t=6
      It was in the upper 30s at the start and was in the mid 50s I think later in the day.
      You can see in the video how people dressed, I hope it helps you get an idea.
      It can be really windy in the afternoon, so I'd keep that in mind too.
      Maybe I'll see you there!

    HI....enjoyed your video. Do you and your coach set weekly elevation goals in addition to time and intensity? Sorry if you already answered that in a previous video.....Just curious as I prep for Sedona in one of the flattest areas in the country! And your consistency in your workouts is very inspiring.

    Are you doing any coaching? Actually, would you recommend that I find a local coach who knows my geographical area, to better help me train? I'm in SoCal and we have a plethora of trails and road to run on. But I"m looking for someone to help me get back into a routine.

    • @wplate
      @wplate  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jennifer, no I don't do coaching. I actually started a certification once, but I just don't have time. 😢
      I've had my coach both living in my area and not living in my area, but not once has she ever assigned me something based on my geographical area. I'd think it's easier for everyone if you get a coach who meets your needs aside from location, and then you figure out where you do your runs. The coach can suggest distance, hills or not hills, and you can figure out which hilly or not hilly local trails are best for you. Even a local coach wouldn't know all the trails you have access to.
      I'm stoked you're thinking of getting a coach, I think they can be really helpful!

    Would ultra running be something for the olympics in your opinion? Every 4 years in a completely different country, meeting people from around the world.

    • @wplate
      @wplate  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not in my opinion because I see the Olympics being very competitive with athletes striving to be “the best” while I find the essence of ultra running to be more about community and supporting each other to the finish and not about competition. There are people who are into competition and some people race ultras to get CRs and podium finishes, which is cool people can like what they like, but that does not interest me.
