    My friend Steve and I set out for an adventure and to do a long run together in Arizona.
    Steve had done this loop previously and loved it for amazing views from the ridge line. Weather intervened, and we ended up with a different experience than we originally planned.
    But we had so much fun.

    Some of that was like running through Pandora in Avatar. Beautiful.

      Nice comparison! Steve and I discussed after the run that the amount of water we experienced reminded us of running in the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest, it wasn't like running in the desert!

    There was something 'otherworldly' about the terrain in this. Thanks for sharing Wes!

      Yes, it was unreal the experience we had. In all ways beautiful and so different from my normal.

    Wow, that’s crazy to see that much snow on the Superstitions! Looks like you guys had quite the adventure!

      It was so much fun man. I was nervous in some parts of the snowy ridge, a little past my comfort zone, but I was really trusting in Steve. He had been on the trail before and he's an experienced guide, so I had faith we'd make it though!

    Love it. Solid adventure indeed. Is this the definition of getting sand bagged? 😄

    • @wplate
      @wplate  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn’t know the term so I searched and found a fun article in Climbing magazine. “Sandbag: (noun) A route of substantially elevated difficulty in comparison to others of the same grade. (verb) To suggest a route of such character to a friend.”
      www.climbing.com/people/what-is-sandbag-climbing/#
      I enjoyed reading that article. Thanks for teaching me the term. And I think you’re right!

    Very cool time in the Superstitions . In Dec I also did a big run, the ICON Loop in the Superstition's. Started and ended at Crosscut TH. Ended up at just over 23 miles in 13 hrs.

    Beautiful yet dangerous! Glad to see you slogged through okay. Areas to the south of us (I live in Pagosa Springs, CO) have been getting a LOT of moisture this winter. It's going to make for a stunning spring bloom in the desert.

      I was nervous a little in the snow on the ridge, but my buddy is an experienced guide and also had been on the trail a couple times plus we both had the route on our phones so when we went off trail a couple times we knew where to go to regain the trail. All in all it was an awesome day, and the amount of flowing meant we didn't have to hunt for water sources to refill from. I am excited to return to AZ for Cocodona in May and see how beautiful it will be.

    Such a beautiful run! I could totally see myself running those trails in the snow and fog and just loving every mile. What a cool 27 mile run! What were the temps like?

    • @wplate
      @wplate  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The temperatures were awesome actually. My car said it was 37º when we started, but were both very comfortable. It wasn't a lot colder up on top, and a few hours into the snow I could feel the temperature rising slightly. Once we got back down out of the snow and the sun was out, it got as warm as the mid 50ºs I think. It was perfect running weather.

      @@wplate That's perfect! Cool enough to keep you from excessively sweating but warm enough so that you're not freezing cold! It seriously look like a great time out there!

    Hello Wes, thanks for sharing these videos. Really good stuff. As a long distance runner what is your go-to shoe? Do you prefer a more cushioned ride?

    • @wplate
      @wplate  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I definitely prefer cushion. In 2015, after reading Born to Run I tried minimalist shoes, which led to an ankle injury running a 50K on pavement, it was dumb but I was new and just-learning. It taught me well. I wore Hoka for a while as I rehabbed my ankle. In my Puget Sound 200 last October I ran a lot in Hola again because of the road, but mostly I run in Topo Athletic. In fact in the 12 Feb Training VLOG I spoke to this. Here's a link to that: th-cam.com/video/WjHwJjgzNik/w-d-xo.htmlsi=tBVVOywqDyCdlbMu&t=478

    • @GrimJokes
      @GrimJokes 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wplate I appreciate the response. I've been using Lone Peaks to walk/hike because their wides are actually wide. Being a heavier runner makes running in them quite brutal. I've decided to check out the Wide Ultraventures, it's nice finding a shoe with some drop and a wide toebox.
      Best of luck in your races this year!
