I remember, being from the city, I was so freaked out when I only knew them from this very intro, and then one day staying at my grandma's place, they tested the town sirens and I almost shit my pants.
The invasion scenes are just perfect. The cloud of paratroopers descending as Kirovs loom overhead, the shadow of the giant squid passing over the submarines before swimming past our view, and the blink and you'll miss it terror drone scuttling ahead of the tanks. It's so awesomely done.
Which I somewhat find hilarious at the same time... I'm assuming a lot of those paratroopers might soil their pants out of the anxiety something will hit them in this very congested airspace...

Ray Wise is a phenomenal actor and showed how much care Westwood took to tell a good story within its genre. People who rail it’s campiness completely miss it’s intentional style. Red Alert 2 was one of the best strategy games ever made, and it feels like this is when RTS peaked along with AOE 2, Warcraft 3, and Dawn of War

It's funny how each installment of the Red Alert series has gotten progressively sillier. RA1 was very dark, but the performances were still pretty campy. Then the expansion had you fighting giant ants. Red Alert 2 had some serious elements but the tone is mostly light. Yuri's revenge was significantly more cartoonish, and finally RA3 is utterly impossible to take seriously. In my opinion, vanilla RA2 has the perfect blend of campy and serious. All the actors are top notch but you can tell that they were having fun, and knew exactly what kind of game they were making. The game never goes into the territory of "trying too hard", the humorousness of the general setting is already self-evident. That's what we call "charm", and it's a rare thing in videogames these days.
This game is still unmatched as far as the story and how fun it is. Just an all around amazing game, and I have so many great memories playing it as a kid. Still do sometimes now. Glad others enjoy it as much as I do.

i had a pentium 200mhz. this intro lagged like crazy, especially when the silos exploded. i struggled to get this game going when i was a kid. saved just enough to get a P2 just to play this.
