The key to withdrawing from ATMs is to retrieve relatively small amounts: there are instances where the ATMs fail to dispense money though it makes the noise. In these instances the customers never get compensated though they may have strong documentation. And, yes, decline banks conversion rate

Wow, I've never experienced the ATM keeping my money. I don't usually take out a huge amount, but on average at least 300,000 COP per visit. So what do you consider "small amounts"? Also, I've taken out more and have never encountered this issue, and no one I know ever warned anything like this. So this is a new one for me, definitely wouldn't doubt it though. Which ATM did you use? Did this happen to you personally or you just heard about it somewhere?

@@richexperiences1 To clarify, I met a guy who told me he withdrew peso equal to $400 USD from Colombian ATM but the machine did not dispense the money though it made the sound, and account was changed. He was not able to retrieve the money. I've heard other cases too. I ussually only withdraw about $70-80 dollars. I have a Schwab account, so ATM fees are paid by Schwab. Most Colombian business establishments accept US credit and debit cards so that's another way to pay.

Yeah, I'm like you. I usually stick to withdrawing less than a bill. And I use Schwab too. Dem ATM fee refunds with no foreign transaction fees are sweeeet! Gotta say it's my ace-in-the-hole card. Too bad your boy couldn't dispute that faulty withdrawal with his bank. Man that's cold.

Never use a debit card anywhere in usa or overseas

Why not? I do it all the time...but usually overseas I do reserve the use of my debit card to ATMs or some well-established stores only. For the rest, I stick to my credit card or cash.

@richexperiences1 debit card is not covered for losses, credit card by law is covered if stolen and money put on it.
