A year later, it's time to describe our now-considerable experience with the TX-22 in our busy Intro classes. We replaced our 12 Ruger Mk III 22/45s with a dozen TX-22s and the short version is, we're beyond pleased with the change. The TX-22s have proven to be far superior for the intro-level training class than the Mk IIIs. They are more reliable, more approachable for the new shooter, and have several features that make them a much better trainer. They have excellent memory grooves for the trigger finger and offside thumb. The existence of the manual safety allows us to teach the use of one, even if it's not crucial in the Intro. The magazine capacity is of course a plus, although we have our newbies only loading 12 at a time, as that works better in terms of focus and concentration. And they run better than the Rugers did for us, especially once CCI Mini-Mags were no longer available every week- we have been running Aguila Super Extra or similar. Just as an example, we did an Intro last week with some 1500 rounds being fired by our 13 students. There was not one single malfunction that I saw all night that was not student-induced or a dud round. That's really good. And these are under-maintained, dirty guns getting beat on every week. Incidentally, all of the gun lock back when empty reliably, much more so than the Rugers too. One minor quirk we've learned is to have the person filling the mag (to any level) pull the load button down and let it snap up to re-settle the rims. This makes a difference as it covers for crooked loading by inexperienced hands. Another major point of improvement is that there is virtually no transition training needed when the student moves on the the striker-fired centerfire guns we have in the class (mostly P320s M&P9s, and PPQs), where with the Rugers, we had to start all over with slide racking and control operation. This saves a lot of time for the instructors on the range. All of our instructors will agree: we don't miss the old Mk IIIs a bit.
I somehow have missed this presentation, but came across it today. Interestingly, I recently purchased a tx22 compact mostly due a combination of price and reputation for eating ammo. I’m pleased to find that it is also good enough for the crew to retain. Paul’s presentations will retain their value long into the future. Rest easy Paul.
@@danielholtz1066 Beat me to it. I think he was actually getting more frustrated in this one. I think he was just getting tired/bored in the reliability test.
I would normally assume ammo or riding the slide lock.... But seeing the others do so well with the same ammo can't call it that and no way would I doubt Paul's grip... Definitely strange
I appreciate this Man in today's world of Boys. He stands in the snow, rain, and wind and keeps schedule trucking along!!! It would be an absolute honor to spend life surrounded by real men without all the childish drawbacks. Thank you Paul.
I love it that whenever Paul shoots the last round instead of reloading a new magazine before the chamber is empty, he emphasizes its instructional purposes only. In other words, count your rounds and reload before the chamber is empty. Thanks Paul!
I have learned to not use the loading assist tabs on my TX22 magazines. Since doing that, the few failures I did get with nose dives during feeding have gone away. I also haven't had a rim lock scenario since then either. I love my TX22, it's been a solid shooter.
The dude deserves to be making money off his brand, but he insists on doing the Bill Watterson thing and refuses to capitalize on it. He needs tshirts and action figures and lunchboxes and movie deals, damnit!
Wow, talk about a three in one - the first time I can recall Paul audibly growling in irritation on screen, and the absolute professional burn onto glock while adding a Taurus to the inventory.
I own two 2 Taurus TX22 s. The first one I bought in 2019.Ive fired well over ten thousand rounds with no issues after break in period of 200 rounds . 4 issues during this time . This pistol was stolen. I recently bought another TX 22 in splatter grey. During the break-in I had 3 failures . After break-in I have fired about a thousand rounds with zero issues . The slide locks back as it should . Typically, CCI is my round of choice, though I've fired others on occasion. I like to use CCI stingers as I do carry this weapon. I have no issues using it as self defense. I can hit what I aim at consistently. My 68 year old hands don't like the recoil from bigger calibers . I shoot them but I don't trust my aim. Sorry, I almost forgot to say thanks very much for your video. I enjoyed it a lot.
This was a fair review of the TX. I got one last year and while I've had a few issues shooting Winchester Whitebox and some old Federal Champion ammo, the little guy's unloaded everything else I've bought so far without any firearm or mag-related issues cropping up. Could it be better? Of course. But if it's good enough to remain in Team Harrell's inventory, it's good enough to remain in mine.
I have a Ruger 10/22 with some internal upgrades (recoil buffer, VQ firing pin and extractor, BX trigger, and BX25 magazines) I fire ALOT of 22LR through this rifle on a very regular basis. While CCI mini-mags and stingers seem to be more reliable than most, oddly it’s the Aguila Super Extra High Velocity that has been the MOST reliable, and by a respectable margin. Inspired by Mr. Harrell, I have actually kept a record of malfunctions. In the last 5000 rounds of aguila, I’ve had 4 duds, 1 failure to Eject, and 3 failures to feed. The CCI (mini mag and stingers combined) has had 7 duds, no failures to eject, and 28 failures to feed, and one SQUIB. However this has been in 2200 rounds, not 5000. I heartily recommend Aguila Rimfire ammo. Their subsonic ammo has been great too, although I fire it in lower quantities. The only malfunctions I’ve had with it are simply not having enough pop to cycle the actions of a couple of different guns.
@@colemanbonner I can confirm your findings with Aguila Super Extra (specifically the 40 grain copper jacketed round nose Aguila prime) in that it's plenty hot enough to reliably cycle even stiff semi auto actions (or particularly dirty guns). I shoot a lot of CCI standard velocity and it notably needs a cleaner chamber. I think generally 22 LR semi autos just work better with higher energy rounds.
Bought a TX 22 few months back, other than a handfull of hiccups the first few mags its been an exceptional gun, so much so it replaced my m&p 22 which went click more than bang...nothing like my m&p 40 which in almost 1000rnds has never malfunctioned
I appreciate Paul being articulate enough that TH-cam’s auto-generated subtitles actually get almost everything right, including the applause every time he’s firing.
Wow that is so rare. Then again, people who speak English as well as Paul Harrell are rare these days. His type is an endangered species. Come to think of it, actually there's no "his type." He's one of a kind.
It's amazing, one of the very few gun channels that has ad's running. Did anyone notice the 'aura' around Paul when shooting. Your shooting quite good considering the wind.
You could easily avoid dark times by eliminating the enemy in a timely manner. But you didn’t... “You were given the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour, and you will have war.' - To Neville Chamberlain” ― Winston Churchill.
I always have a back-log of YT videos to watch, yet every time a PH one shows up in my notifications, I stop what I am doing to watch his newest video. Seems I am only 30 minutes out on this one, thanks, YT Notifications. Hitting the thumbs-up first, now I am gonna watch it!
Just bought a Taurus TX22 for my twin daughters when we go to the range. I think Paul's review is spot on! I'd recommend the TX22 to anyone that wants a reliable, accurate, .22 auto with a really good trigger. -RIP brother Paul.
Had to take a break when he said "in the hands of the average shooter" and pointed to himself. Gene wilder once ran into cary grant. Cary grant said something about "an ordinary guy like you or me". I admire humility
I picked up the TX22 a few months ago, and was as surprised as Paul to learn that it is a legitimately good gun. I've had mixed results with Taurus in the past, but TX22 seems to be a winner.
My advice is only shoot copper plated bullets. I shoot mine extensively, at least 100 rounds/week, and they can lead up really quick. If the rounds keyhole it is time to clean.
Gotta say, the camera angle and lighting from 3:05 onward is very picturesque. Everything from the clouds moving, to the trees swaying, to the beam of light coming down upon Paul and the smoke coming from every shot.
"You won't have to bear with me saying please bear with fire in the background" I thought bearing with fire in the background was just one of those caveats...
"this tx22 will be retained by my crew"- OK Paul Ive heard enough, I got a tx22 yesterday, and its been exceptional in every way. The ergonomics, accuracy and reliability is perfect.
I have a TX22 and love it.The slide has never failed to lock back on the last round. It has shot every kind of bulk ammo I have tried with no problems. Better ergos than the M&P for my hand. Good video but not what I have found to be the case in my experience with my TX22. Thanks for the video..
Mr. Harrell - Just a note to say thanks for all you do, AND that I hope you having "unlimited and exclusive access" to your new facility is a result of your growing success. You've been at this for many years, giving us the best firearms information available, and you deserve every reward we can offer in return.
Hmm. Let's see how this goes. My TX22 has been pretty awesome. Gobbles up Remington Thunderbolts as fast as I can refill the magazine. Can't ask for more than that from a plinker.
As for the 'round jams against the inside-front wall of the magazine when trying to chamber' issue that Paul mentions, I've found that I can reduce or eliminate it; after fully loading a mag pull down slightly on the follower button and quickly release it, and it tends to spring the top round into the correct position for reliable feeding. Also give the magazine a couple quick raps against the palm of your off hand seems to settle the rounds in a more consistent way. Have you encountered any similar problems or solutions?
@@atomic_wait I use the loading tool that came with the gun, and my habit with ALL pistol mags is to tap the back of them against my hand after they're filled. With the TX22 I found that if I pulled the side button down quite a ways and dropped the rounds in, the rims would stagger inconsistently. Using the included tool prevented that problem.
I found a used one at a LGS and I’m tempted to get it. Seeing Paul give this pistol a high enough honor to keep it in his collection sealed the deal for me on it. I hate he passed away so suddenly and I know there won’t be any more reviews from him but the ones he did do he did with such attention to detail, clarity, and reasonable expectations that they can still be used to make an educated decision on purchases and as a format many others should look to for future reviews.
This is my favorite gun channel. Glad you did a Taurus review. I own a Taurus G3 and I, as well as my two brothers, like it more than my brothers Sig P320 Xcompact. Now that you've done another Taurus review, do you think you might be able to do yet another and review the G3? I would really appreciate your take on it Sir. Thank you very much for your time and effort in making these videos. I look forward to each and every one.

Thanks Paul. I love how thorough you are and always appreciate learning from what I consider to be "an expert". I saw a barely used TX22 Competition at my local gun store recently and couldn't pass it up. Wow, what a great shooter. It makes me look like an expert. Will be a great pistol for family and friends at the range. Yes, Taurus has come a long ways, including having manufacturing in the US.
If Paul had been cast as James T. Kirk. “Dear un-identified vessel, you have entered a Starfleet testing zone, be prepared to hear laser and torpedo fire. We will be firing from the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. On your left we will be firing Starfleet green and white box photon torpedoes. On your right we will be firing the ‘new and improved’ Starfleet green and Yellow box ‘hyper’ photon torpedoes...”
You do such damn thorough reviews you get a thumbs up this time before I even watch! Good job, you actually take the time to do such extensive leg work to provide valuable info.
Finally! Thank you Paul! I've been trying to tell people how good and reliable the Taurus TX22 is. Even after I would point out that Guns & Ammo named it the pistol of the year, the large magazine capacity, the out-of-the-box accuracy, the low sticker price, the cheap ammo, the pic rail, the comment that always shut me down was: "has Paul Harrell reviewed it?"
@@treborkroy5280 I have a PPK/S. The double action is unuseable, the only ammo it will reliably fire is CCI Mini Mags. Won't even work on Winchester Super X. Handling it, you can get the impression it was made at one of Umarex's pellet gun factories not a Walther factory. It is reliable on Mini Mags but the overall fit and finish underwhelmed me, particularly since it is made in Germany.
Love the new training facilities and the weather was perfect for this vid Please extend my thanks to whomever has generously allowed all of your fans to experience a better quality of audio in each of your videos And thank you Paul for taking the time and making the effort to create such high quality content
Bless you, Paul for this timely video. Great deal of emotional stress here, just notified I and my family are now on 14 day quarantine..grr...so tired of this...

But hang in there, things will be rough before they get better. Keep the TV off all and any "news" channels and you'll have generally better health. There's nothing they are broadcasting that you need to hear in the first place.
After watching dozens of videos on the TX22 Taurus I finally went and got one to go along with my ruger 10/22 rifles. Thanks to Paul Harrell and team and many others for their excellent reviews. The bizzare slide not locking back was strange but I am glad it broke in and began working correct after a few mags. One thing folks may not know is you can buy a "Competition conversion" which is a different slide, barrel, sights, and spring/guide rod set to instantly convert your regular TX22 to a TX 22 Competition. Its on Taurus's website for $199.99 It also makes your TX 22 red dot ready. Thanks again Paul and crew!
I would highly recommend eye protection with the Beretta. I get a face full of gun powder every once in awhile from the way the blast comes out of the top.
Thank you for this review of the Taurus TX22. I have two of them plus several extra magazines. I think it's a beautiful gun, I love the full size, and I especially love the 16 + 1 rounds. I'm proud of Taurus for bringing their game up. And what a wonderful honor that Guns & Ammo chose the TX22 as it's Gun of the Year when it was debuted.
It didn't start off very good. TX 22 had barrel problems that needed to be sent back to Taurus along with cracked slides ! To their credit the company fixed the issues & that is what caused me to Buy my TX 22. Very reliable.
Great video. I am late to this party, but I will add my two cents. I own two of the S&W M&P 22's. One is the full size that was made in Germany with the internal hammer (not striker fired) and the other is the Compact made in US with striker fired. I have owned the Taurus TX22 for about two years. I was turned off by the Glock 44 based on 22plinksters review, so I never bought one. The Taurus TX22 is a blast to shoot. I would compare it in every way to the S&W's. I am a 22lr addict and also own an old school Browning Buck Mark with gold trigger and cherry wood grips, a S&W 22A, and Ruger Mark 1's and 2's. The Taurus will also be retained by my crew.
That sigh at 17:20 would make Chuck Norris wince. I went with the Walther PPQ in 22 lr to match my PPQ in 9mm. It is perfect for training my daughters on semi-auto pistols with a very light smooth slide. They don’t have to struggle to rack it so it boosts their confidence and enhances our safety on the range.
That is hilarious closed captioning is on my phone. Right after you say 36 grain hollow point and turn and start firing it has (Applause). Apparently that's what gun fire registers as in closed captioning. I fully agree
I just bought the Taurus 22 day before yesterday and went to the range today. Wow, what a great, fun little gun to shoot. A terrific plinker. I was just using bulk ammo of different types that was thrown into a bucket all mixed together. I didn't have a single failure of any kind. Amazing. Taurus finally got something right! Will be a good gun to practice sight acquisition and trigger control without breaking the bank on ammo.
Great demonstration of 22 auto pistols performances that make a valid point that is worth mention. Double action revolvers are still and always will be; sometimes a better choice to use instead of an auto pistol. They are able to continue to fire even if a faulty round fails just by pulling the trigger. Some auto pistols have internal hammers able to strike the round a second time; however, this feature can be helpful but only if the round fires on the second trigger pull. If happens not too fire it requires more time to clear the failure than a revolver. One other handy and important feature revolvers bring to the table is retaining empty cases. Going on an Easter egg hunt every time you go shooting cleaning up the mess auto pistols all make. Last but not least revolvers are able to use all power levels of ammo and bullet design without any issues.
Revolvers do have a few advantages but imo they are far out weighted by the advantages of the semi auto. The wife does carry a revolver. A very small stainless pistol in her purse that weighs almost nothing. However i would feel better if she would agree to carry a small .25 simi auto
Good video, Paul, to which I’ll add one comment. We live in the “golden age” of autoloaders - many good designs, many excellent quality manufactures, and variants of those good designs to provide great alternatives for individual purchasers. Moat of today’s semiautomatics don’t requisite break-in periods, however, not too many years ago virtually every autoloader required a few hundred rounds until it was ready for non-range use. I’m no fan of Taurus weapons - my very limited experience suggests that you might get a entirely good one, but not infrequently you’ll receive a “lemon” . . . and their customer service has a reputation for being slow and often not correcting the problem. With that said, I hear Taurus quality and customer service have improved during the last couple years. Although I’d personally stick with the Smith M&P2, it’s nice to see a decent Taurus AND I attribute its failures to lock the slide back when the last round was fired to “normal” break-in issues, for which I certainly won’t downgrade the Taurus.
I have 2 Taurus customer service stories. I bought a Rossi R46202 revolver. I was doing a lot of dry firing with snap caps (I have one of those lasers that fits in to your gun and "fires" when you pull the trigger and a target that senses the laser). The firing pin broke. I had heard so many horror stories about Taurus customer service I was looking for a local gunsmith to fix it. Someone told me they were better than they used to be and that I should give them a try. I called and explained that the firing pin broke before I had a chance to take the gun to the range. They apologized, emailed me a prepaid FedEx label and said they would fix it. Keep in mind handguns must be sent overnight so getting free shipping is a big deal. 2 weeks later I had my gun back and it has performed flawlessly ever sense. My Father bought a PT111 from Rural KIng. They will not let you tough the gun you are buying until after the transfer is complete and specify all warranty/ repair issues are between you and the manufacturer. Dad gets it home and turns out it doesn't release the firing pin when you pull the trigger. He calls them up, gets a prepaid label and in about 3 weeks his gun comes back and it has worked fine ever since. 2 "crib deaths" is not encouraging but their customer service was.
@@1978garfield Ouch, but when I thought about it, one way to improve customer loyalty and brand reputation - even if quality is, at best, inconsistent - is good customer service. For me, worrisome part of your report is “what fails next?”. I’ve had a couple of firearms that I had to “nurse” through the break-in period that tuned our fine, but never for the sorts of things you described. Still, I suspect they’ll work out satisfactorily.
No gun has been thoroughly reviewed until Paul reviews it. Always excellent, appropriate, and instructional. One of the best youtubers out there. Thanks for being here. Two thumbs up and 5 stars.
Your reviews are always so much more refreshing to watch than the standard fare that I usually see on pistol reviews. Somehow I get the idea that you’re an engineer in your regular life because your design of experiments seems to be very well thought through.
Wow, the S&W has a better trigger pull and ergos? I've got a TX22 and have owned a 9mm S&W M&P. For me the ergos of the TX22 are fantastic. And the trigger is pretty terrific as well. As far as accuracy, my TX 22 is just OK. But trigger and ergo wise the thing just rocks! My TX22 locks back just fine 🤷🏻♂️
I definitely got a good TX22. I've shot 1250 of very mixed brands and weights. Not one single problem and it locks back every single time. Accurate too. You always do an excellent job with your videos. Thank You Paul!
I have literally seen every one of your videos Paul, as I've been a sub since you were below 150K subs, maybe even below 100K. This is the first time my eyes ever wandered off to the background clouds/trees....etc. Beautiful piece of land you picked up. Will definitely add some serenity to your future videos.
Highly variable magazine power, yes. Though some of that might be caused by the frame rate of the video camera against the frequency of the slide movement.
You are welcome!! Raise coming in February and will add more to patreon. Still waiting for the PH line of hunting jackets...and action figures. Just sayin'
We bought a Ruger SR 22 a few years ago and it has been great. There have been the few instances of predictable malfunctions we all know come with firing .22 LR ammo. It does like the heavier Winchester 40 grain ammo in the higher velocity range, around 1400 FPS. The high velocity ammo, 1280 FPS Thunderbolts have functioned very well, but we use the "lower velocity" ammo in our .22 rifles and Ruger Single Six pistols, and save the higher velocity rounds for the SR 22. I have run tens of thousands of Thunderbolt rounds over the years and have never had a problem with them. Good video and good information.
Looks like the Glock 44 is a better paper weight than the Taurus Judge, and that Taurus has redeemed themselves by producing a reliable handgun. Thanks Paul, and an early happy birthday to you and all Devil dogs. Semper Fi
Paul you don't seem like someone who is a big fan of aftermarket devices, but I highly recommend replacing the TX22's guide rod assembly with one from Lakeine. The TX22 has a history of beating up its slide right around the hole for the guide rod. Eventually the slide will crack. Happened to me and a few other folks who have the TX22. Took Taurus four months to fix the gun and it still came back with the same guide rod assembly. Replaced it with the one from Lakeline and after 1200 rounds, no issues.
Taurus has gotten significantly better. My G2C hasn't hiccuped yet after several hundred intentionally mixed rounds. That said it is the only Taurus I have even considered in 10 years after two previous drastic failures.
I need a TX-22, already have the M&P and the Beretta and love them both. It is dumb, I know, but the fact that Paul Harrell endorsed two guns I own is pretty cool.

Wow, talk about a three in one - the first time I can recall Paul audibly growling in irritation on screen, and the absolute professional burn onto glock while adding a Taurus to the inventory.
TX22 is a solid pistol. I have one myself, and of course, it’s loaded with Remington Golden Bullet 36 grain Hollow Point.
It’s a good day when Paul puts out a video!
Makes things seem almost normal for a few minutes don't it?
Same problem here with the two brands of ammo you mentioned , but shooting them in a 10/22 semiautomatic rifle 🤔😒
I have a Ruger 10/22 with some internal upgrades (recoil buffer, VQ firing pin and extractor, BX trigger, and BX25 magazines)
I fire ALOT of 22LR through this rifle on a very regular basis.

Love the new camera angles, love the landscape, love the information, honesty, marksmanship, just nice to watch.I want Paul on my side.
With the price of ammo these day I have a feeling we're gonna get a lot of .22 vids
@@1978garfield
Ouch, but when I thought about it, one way to improve customer loyalty and brand reputation - even if quality is, at best, inconsistent - is good customer service. For me, worrisome part of your report is “what fails next?”. I’ve had a couple of firearms that I had to “nurse” through the break-in period that tuned our fine, but never for the sorts of things you described. Still, I suspect they’ll work out satisfactorily.
Offhand I can't think of a better recommendation for a firearm than Paul Harrell saying he's going to add it to his rotation

Did it improve with break-in or start out locking back?
My TX22 has been supremely accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I get consistent hits on a 5" plate at 30 yards

"Hi, we're at our newly acquired training facility please bear with any beautiful scenery you see in the background"
I definitely got a good TX22. I've shot 1250 of very mixed brands and weights. Not one single problem and it locks back every single time. Accurate too.
You always do an excellent job with your videos. Thank You Paul!
Taurus should make a special edition "You be the Judge"
Oh that's good lol
I have literally seen every one of your videos Paul, as I've been a sub since you were below 150K subs, maybe even below 100K. This is the first time my eyes ever wandered off to the background clouds/trees....etc. Beautiful piece of land you picked up. Will definitely add some serenity to your future videos.
When you hold the handgun up with the sky as a background, you can see the slide move back different distances.
notiiced that too
Highly variable magazine power, yes. Though some of that might be caused by the frame rate of the video camera against the frequency of the slide movement.
What a beautiful and peaceful landscape for a video
You are welcome!! Raise coming in February and will add more to patreon.
Still waiting for the PH line of hunting jackets...and action figures. Just sayin'
Congrats on the acquisition of your new shooting area.
Interesting review, didn't expect the outcome.
Has anyone else noticed the absence of Shaneresque pauses while Paul describes the ammo he's using?
Semper Fi
Seems the Taurus G2 and G3 have met with good reviews; they've upped their game. Would like to see a G3S, without a durn safety.
Paul your honesty is always greatly appreciated. Thank you sir.
When he say's Disappointingly, I am not even going to finish the magazine LOL
Another fair shake from Paul Harrell. Thank you for the quality videos!
I've been hearing that Taurus are improving their quality control these days.
What a beautiful area to shoot in, nice job Paul.
"And for instructional purposes only..." For those that are in the know, know.
I need a TX-22, already have the M&P and the Beretta and love them both.
It is dumb, I know, but the fact that Paul Harrell endorsed two guns I own is pretty cool.
