Every easy to use linux distro I’ve ever used, gives me problems right off the bat. Giving me errors when I simply try to install a web browser. Recently tried linux mint again last week…. Got web browser installed, Firefox then repeated to crash non stop until I rage quit after trying opera and it doing the same thing. I won’t be switching from windows for a loooong time, especially since I’m a gamer

I've been using Fedora for more than 2 years. However I test other distributions on a secondary laptop and I've liked Manjaro and PopOS and I tried Nobara as well but not for so long, but currently it's Fedora and Manjaro. I'm hoping to try out PopOS Cosmic(Not sure if it's released yet though)

    Let me list mine:
    1. Ubuntu for the huge user base and their "functionality über alles" mentality.
    2. OpenSUSE because I am German 🇩🇪. Also it feels the most Professional.
    3. Fedora because it literally feels like a fresh breeze in a spring morning. Can you relate?
    4. Linux Mint (Debian Edition) because it is the ultimate good-guy-distro and the Mint team does an outstanding job.
    5. Debian. Of course. The Gandalf, the Dumbledore of distros.

Not sure if I even have a favorite because I can install any window manager I want and and any program I want. Most distros are just bundles of select software. I guess Ubuntu because it usually has driver support.

    • @waltercampelo
      @waltercampelo ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@prasannapaudel2457 Let me try to give some steps:
      1. Do a minimal Debian Bullseye (11.6) expert installation (I selected ext4 as my FS, and I put with the following partitions: /boot, /boot/efi, root, /home, /tmp (ext2), /var/log, /var/lib/pgsql, swap, but you can choose some of the guided options or LVM, or do a completely different configuration), and in tasksel clear all software except the last entry (No Gnome, KDE, whatever)
      2. Install network-manager and disable ifupdown (/etc/network/interfaces)
      3. Install basic CLI software (neofetch, htop, git, etc...)
      4. Change /etc/apt/sources.list making every 'bullseye' reference be 'bookworm'
      5. sudo apt update
      6. sudo apt full-upgrade
      7. reboot
      8. sudo apt autoremove
      9. reboot
      10. Now that you have a Debian minimal with bookworm (Debian 12) prepare to install KDE.
      11. Install xorg, xserver-xorg, xinput, mesa-utils, lm-sensors, fancontrol
      12. If you want to use Wayland then install xwayland
      13. Install kde-plasma-desktop, kde-baseapps
      14. reboot
Hopefully, you will end up with a minimal Debian 12 with KDE 5.27 installed.

    I’m enjoying Alpine Linux recently.
Very very slim in foot print. Possibly the slimmest. So it’s really good with old hardware. So far no driver issues either. Most things I want I can get installed. It’s apparently got an Arch Linux feel. It’s a little like playing with Lego when you set it up. Just very simple and fast. Yet it’s also quite secure and stable. It’s a niche distro. Well maintained. Focus being mainly for inside docker containers.

Currently testing Vanilla OS myself. I'm waiting for the KDE version to really commit to it, though I've also heard they're planning to switch do Debian Sid. Pretty interesting to follow.
Following PopOS closely myself. It was my first distro, and I quite like a lot of its modifications and choices. The Pop Shell menu or whatever it's called was so good I had to try to replicate it with rofi. Also, Recovery Partition should just be standard in Linux desktops already. It's exciting to see what they're going to do next, since I've heard news of btrfs-snapshot and immutable core with overlays.
I have to say that Garuda is probably my favorite though -- used it for two years, it was the distro that spends the longest on my PC. I switched away only because of the grub issue and because they were doing a lot of work for their next ISO (which had only just been published today). I don't like their theme, but I use Whitesur-dark everywhere anyways so it was an easy switch. I like the UX a lot though -- literally always something that I try to recreate on any KDE.
Nobara is also on my list. I could probably use it if, and when, Surfshark publishes an .rpm because ain't no way I'm dealing with rebuilding .deb with alien ever again, just too annoying. Hopefully they adopt some of Vanilla's technology, particularly apx. apx --aur and apx --nix is just too convenient for me.
Lastly, I have a soft spot for FerenOS. It has a very small development team and a bus factor of one, but they just show you the heights that could be achieved with KDE out of the box, as well as making a lot of cool projects and convenient modifications. I'll definitely try it again, once they finished the rebase to 22.04 (like I said, very small development team).

My usage of Linux actually started off rough without a GUI on my VPSes. CentOS 7 IIRC circa 2015. So I got very familiar with the Redhat server OSes before eventually committing to using Linux on the desktop in 2021. I wanted something rolling, but Arch had a reputation of "difficult to use" (admittedly it was rather inconvenient to install) so I got scared. Ended up choosing Manjaro which was a grave misstep in hindsight. If I have to summarise the shortcomings of Manjaro in one sentence, it would be "It's stuck in the awkward middleground between changing very little (like EndeavourOS) and changing everything (like SteamOS), which is the worst place to be".
I was stuck there for a while because all my stuff was set up and everything was configured to my liking, and I was too lazy to do it all over again. Only recently after an AUR package that's particularly important for my work failed to update (yettttt again) because a dependency issue that I finally bit the bullet and installed EndeavourOS (only last week), which is where I'm writing this comment on. Transitioning was actually easier than I imagined, because I had all my old configuration files that I could just copy over on demand (which are fortunately mostly compatible thanks to being on the same physical hardware and sharing the same Arch base).
In terms of DE I'm mostly a KDE guy. Although on devices with a simpler purpose (e.g. home theatre) I'd probably prefer Gnome (and maybe the new Cosmic once it's ready).
Yesterday I was planning a family vacation with my parents (mid 50s, I'm 25), and my mum asked to borrow my laptop to do some research. She is not very tech-literate and somewhat resistant to changes, so I hesitated a bit on whether it's a good idea to let her try Linux. But I thought "hey, what's the worst that can happen" and handed her my other laptop (which also has EndeavourOS KDE), but I didn't tell her that. She then proceded to use it for about an hour doing research without any problems. I then congratulated her for using Linux for the first time, and she had a pleasantly surprised look on her face as if to say "huh, that wasn't too bad". She is still on Windows for now because of the professional software she needs, but I can see myself moving her onto Linux once she's retired.

I'm also running Nobara KDE/Wayland for few months now. It's pretty good but Steam client keeps crashing, possibly something to do with notifications. I turned them all off but it still crashes from time to time. Discord doesn't work with push to talk same with OBS. I wish they would implement some kind of workaround for this.
I was hyped for global hotkeys in KDE .27 but the way they implemented it is lacking. I don't get why you have to choose less secure option globally? Why can't we choose which X11 apps have access to global hotkeys per program basis? I'd rather whitelist programs I "trust" to be able to listen for all key presses even if the window is not focused.
If anybody has tips to fix there problems please let me know.

Although, i could really see nobara bundling some quick, easy and semi-automated way to setup a windows full gpu passthrough with vfio and looking glass (or whatever GE finds that works best for this) to instantly play those games that refuse to enable linux anti cheat compatibility (or just won't work with proton). Maybe that defeats the whole point of a gaming linux distro but i know many linux gamers (and people considering switching) would love the idea and still play on linux what can be played on linux

I tried out Nobara OS right at the start of this year as I was getting sick of what Microsoft was doing and I didn't stick with it for long. I previously tried popOS but then went back to Windows 10.
After upgrading my GPU in April of this year, Windows started crashing where it will have to reboot. I just lock my computer to go to the toilet and when I came back, I found out that it crashed and rebooted to the login screen. I got sick of it and in late May, I just installed Nobara OS and I have been using it since.
Nobara OS hasn't been giving me any serious issues for what I needed it to do, the only troublesome part was at the beginning when I needed to set things up. The Update System tool is really handy and updates all the drivers and softwares (flatpak and snaps included).

I was unaware of Nobara - I'll have to give that a try. I got my start with RedHat 5 back in the day. I did Mandrake when it was released, and really liked it - and ever since been looking for a decent RedHat-family distro. I used CentOS for servers for a while, especially with cheap companies not willing to pay for RHEL - but that stopped when they dropped support for CentOS 8. I mostly use Debian-family distros like Linux Mint and PopOS. In recent kick, I started playing around with some others - like ElementaryOS and ZorinOS. I also tried Manjaro, but I'm super new to Arch - so it's been a steep learning curve - I kinda hate pacman - or perhaps I just don't understand it.

I used to run PopOS until I installed MySQL for work hich resulted in shutting don not working. Ran Fedora 36 for a year. Fedora 37 upgrade (not fresh intall) caused issues. That thn got replaced with Garuda for several months. That in turn turned out to be a bit sluggish on my laptop. That has now been replaced with Mint.
For my main PC, I require dual boot because of some games. I ran Fedora 37 on it for a few months. Vanilla OS is nice, but it did not bother adding Windows to Grub and none of the examples I found to add it, were recent, so I tossed it ot by installing Manjaro.
Any distro where the installer wants to install onto the first SSD only or I suddenly have to manually partition the moment I switch drives, those distros do not even get a chance to be installed. There are sadly too many such distros that expect the user to know the partition structure which also means that the rest of the distro is lacking polish.

How does it compare to Leap? Cause for me Leap is ok. Little bit outdated gcc (clang not so much) and some libraries, I'd like to have new KDE as it improves a lot last years, but it just works. I'd like to have better documentation or larger community maybe, but with Manjaro KDE it's my favorite distro. Manjaro tends to break sometimes when it's not updated regularly (like old notebook and virtual machine which are sometimes not used for months) and I don't think it's a suitable distro for servers.

@@pavelperina7629 it’s quick, lean, fast, stable and rolling. Opensuse micro os is based on tumbleweed. I found normal tumbleweed to one of most stable rolling releases, even on old hardware. OpenSuse micro os desktop version is just basically OpenSuse micro os server + your desktop environment (in my case it’s kde plasma) + user flatpaks; the latest plasma has built-in support for flatpak permissions.

I loved Nobara, but I just switched to regular Fedora. I just wanted to learn Fedora from the beginning. Nobara was my first distro, as someone who's only recently moved to Linux from Windows. Everything works, Nvidia GPU driver updater, system updater, Proton-GE, etc. I was a bit intimidated by the word "immutable," in retrospect it doesn't matter as much. As soon as Nobara 40 comes out I might switch

Just installed Lubuntu 24.04 10-15 days back. Seems so snappy(hope remains fast in future too) which I am loving it as I have i3 processor. Easy to use, most apps available. Not much troubleshooting involved. Used Fedora before that for 2 years. Ubuntu before that for 7-8 years.
Any other recommendation for being lighter & faster then Lubuntu ?
But don't wanna troubleshoot a lot, as most Linux other Distros.

I started my Linux journey with Arch Linux back in 2017 so I kind of just stuck with Arch based distros and vanilla Arch. I tend to just stick with what I am used to the most. I run Endeavour OS with Qtile currently as Qtile is my favorite window manager and Endeavour is vanilla arch with decent defaults on top of it.

Endeavour OS for me is the best, there are plenty that are similar and that can give me what i want sure, but it just seems like endeavour works out the box all the time, i had problems just getting internet to work on old systems with other distros (typically ill have to put a wifi dongle in, update, then it will act fine, and it is just easier for me to do that) sure some might be different now, but for my basic usage at the moment i just want something that is up and ready to familiarize myself with arch as i do basic tasks, and its working a treat and rather enjoyable
My weird spec dell 5418 is using it and i just got a nuc 12 WSK that has it on now too.

I am currently on Ubuntu Budgie in my laptop (hp elitebook x360 1030 g2, 8 gigs, i7, touch) and Debian 11 with KDE on my desktop (i7, 24 gb, dual screen) ..
Sincerily, budgie is simple and straightforward, but kinda beta-ish ... sometimes the cursor goes missing, sometimes the WM goes bananas, and experienced some freezes. Considering to debianize the laptop.
Never had a good experience with Slack based distros, and love debian stability.

New to the Linux things, and been using Mint, (which I gather you are not a fan of as you don't eve mention it.) I have also tried Fedora, but to be honest I found it more clunky to use than Mint. Because I hate the cli, I find that with Mint I can avoid using it almost 100% and stick with the desktop. Though, as I said I am all still new to this Linux stuff (about a week!!,) so I guess things may change in the future. My only "problem" is I really truly adore Windows! I have been using it since Windows 3.11, so it's kind of my baby so to speak.

Ubuntu Server is very convenient , ofcourse big corps would use RHEL or SLES, but for small business Ubuntu Server is a defacto standard, Debian as a server works too, but it slower outdated and cumbersome at use. Desktop , well this a break or do thing, i prefer Ubuntu Desktop , some people prefer KDE Neon, but many still on windows just , because of old windows software, it gets so far that people buying cheap 1 or 5 dollar license and tell me that a legit. Nowaday Linux runs everywhere and almost everything and maintenance of is less problematic , than it was in the past.
