This is probably the single greatest assembly of musical talent ever! Each singer is/was the epitome of the genres they contributed to; but collectively singing the same song, they were magic.

Bruce Springsteen with Stevie Wonder killed it for me!! I don't care what anyone says they all killed it, but Bruce Springsteen sung it like he was in pain, especially the part where he says, "there's a choice we're making and we're saving our own lives"! I have never seen somebody sing with such passion, so much so until you could see the pain on his face!! Love Bruce Springsteen's voice!! When he first come in with "We are the world, we are the children"! Lord, I used to watch that part over and over again!!!

Dan and John Belushi (SNL)(The Blues Brothers) had a huge hit Soundtrack album at the time. I believe this was right around the time John died. Everyone there was a superstar and it's amazing how many of them agreed to just be in the chorus without having a solo line. Prince was invited but declined.

I guess kind of underrated, but also quite popular. He has had about 20 songs on the Hot 100 Billboard charts, 9 of which were in the top 20, and _Footloose_ reached #1, and he scored a couple of Grammys. It does surprise me that more of his songs weren't bigger hits, but to be fair, there's no denying that he was up against some titanic competition from his contemporaries in the heyday.

Fun Side note on Springsteen in this video. He had just finished two nights in a row at the carrier dome in Syracuse NY where the shows were about 3 hours long. He jumped on a plane in the morning and flew to Los Angeles, rented a corvette then drove to the studio and parked across the street and was thrilled with the parking spot he got. Everyone else was brought in a Limo.
That’s how we Dirty Jersey folks roll ;)! he’s basically a god in our state :P he made a surprise appearance at a Coldplay concert on June 5th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ and sang with Chris Martin. No one knew he was going to show up, and when they introduced him, I jumped 10 feet into the air out of my seat and nearly fainted LOL…he sang around 3 or 4 songs, some with Chris and some by himself, and you bet your butt I was scream-singing my head off the entire time. I’m 24 and the woman next to me was probably in her early 50s and we were both going wild. I find it so cool that Bruce is able to bring together multiple generations through our love of his music!

The person who you asked, “Who’s that?” Is Diana Ross and she is a MUST person to react to. She is an important historical figure in American music. She was originally a part of Diana Ross and the Supremes (Motown) and then she had a solo career and also had some duets. She and Michael had a special relationship. Actually, I think the Supremes were the “ladies” in another group first, but I’m not sure about that. She is much more historically important and every bit as talented as Cyndi Lauper, IMO and I ❤️ Cyndi!

@@itscrazyal from what I recall reading at the time, Smokey actually wasn't invited to be a part of it, he just showed up because he'd heard about it through the grapevine. Nobody, not even Quincy Jones, was going to tell the great Smokey Robinson to leave, so he stayed. But all the solo parts had already been planned out in advance, so he just sang background with everyone else.
An old English man here with tears streaming both with admiration for these iconic artists and the fact you didn't experience them and don't recognise them. These artists are what shaped the music you listen too. Legends

Most of them are legends of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and we’re still strong in the 80s. But most made their names in the 60s-the greatest era of modern music.

Fun fact: When this came out, it was played on radio stations all across the US at the same time! Gives me chills to think about it still today! Flipping through the dial to all kinds of radio stations all playing the same song.

WOW!! This song is STILL extremely emotional to watch. It was a HUGE event when this was released. People were clued to their TVs to watch it. Everyone was singing it and naming the artists as they appeared on screen. This was a historic event, so many musical legends in the same place, on the same song and video at the same time. Many of them are gone now or stopped performing. Young people today missed out on some major talent, back in da day you had to know how to SAAANG, not JUST sing!! 😏
Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick (whose cousin everyone should know - Whitney Houston), Diana Ross, even Bette Midler was there singing - check out her song "Wind Beneath My Wings".
Turner for the hair, but she disappeared 30 years ago. Same for Midler with an exception for a soundtrack song. Ross basically did the same as far as the charts go, 40 years ago. Warwick was there as an ensemble but otherwise hasn't had a solo hit in about 38 years. This IS people "discovering" these artists. I'm not going to bag on them for not recognizing any of these folks.
Every single voice in this song is precious and just phenomenal in their own way but man Stevie Wonder just blew that out of the water. As did Ray. So much heart!
It really just depended on what part of the song they were given to sing. If they had a mellow and understated part then they could not really belt it out like so,e others were able to, or it would not really fit in with the words of their line.
Quincy jones hung a sign outside the door that said "Leave your egos at the door". They all came straight over from the Grammys. It was a very big deal.
Never today would current artists be equal to the greats here. This and the UK Band Aid song Do they know its Christmas (that inspired this) highlighted the sheer musical quality of artists around in the 80s. Live Aid in 85 also showcased this.
You have Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry, Cindy Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and more, and you feel they are squeezin' their souls on every word and every verse... It doesnt matter if you've listened a hundreds of times...always shakes to your very soul, what amazing combo of some of the greatest voices ever and these emotional melodies.
Watching this in 2021 is depressing. I still believe we can be this good. Maybe if we just stopped watching social media so close and our eyes so fixed on the news - it could be this way once again.
They raised $25 million but people are still starving in Africa. A bunch of rich people who did a good thing but had a minimal impact. Throwing money at deep problems is almost always ineffective. Sad but true.

I remember the top artist did something similar, as in coming together to sing after 9/11 back in 2001. I'm sure top artists of today's time would come together to perform together as well if prompted. they do it all the time just for fun, especially on zoom/ video conference just for fun, so they would do it for a travesty or fundraiser
Not entirely true, but it was a good turnout. We can't really say that the "That's What Friends Are For" cast was at the top of its game. But to get this sort of turnout today, they'd first all have to appear at the awards ceremony. For that to happen, the awards ceremony would have to actually mean something again. A lot of dominoes would have to fall before we even get to ego. I wouldn't put "True Colors" out there as a singer's song. I recommend some of her tracks from "Hatful of Stars" (1993). Kind of just out of being really famous and before kind of disappearing. The general sentiment is a good one, though.

This video, still to this day, features more top-level mega superstars in one song and one video than anything ever recorded before or since. Just take a look at the lineup. After Diana Ross, there was Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, etc. That's also, Huey Lewis, Steve Perry from Journey, and I believe that's actually Quincy Jones of Motown fame directing the whole thing. I remember being a kid in the 80's and holding hands and singing this across the while school. This meant something important We sang our hearts out for starving African families.
The thing I remember the most from that song was there was a simulcast all over the world. Literally thousands of radio stations played the song at exactly the same time. I remember sitting with my friends and just turning the dial and it was on every station. It was just a beautiful moment of unity.
This was at a time in history when I truly believe we ALL were beginning to genuinely come together. It wasn’t forced, and their was no agenda attached to it. Consciousness was think in the air. The collective awareness was blasting off. There was no “I’m better or more important than you” mentality here. Naturally, humans will come together… naturally, as we are all one! When moments like this happen, the powers that be, unfortunately, must throw a wrench into this natural advancement and human love, in order to find a way to divide and conquer. Which in itself is artificial, and an illusion. The illusion that we are apart from one another. Songs, like these, must never be forgotten about. As they are a reminder as to what we all really are, which is one infinite consciousness, connected to one another
A brief History of how this came out. In 1983 a famine broke out in Ethiopia. A Canadian reporter broke the story. It got play in the UK. Bob Gelolf, of the Boomtown Rats, wanted to help, so Irish and British musicians got together to perform a song called Do they know it’s Christmas, written by Bob. David Foster, a famous music producer and writer, heard of it and thought Canada should do one. As a result Tears are not enough was recorded in the same manner as the British one. It raised 3 million dollars ( Canadian). America followed suit and USA for Africa was done. Geldof, an Irishman, was honorary knighted in 1990, by Queen Elizabeth the second, in 1990 for all the work he did for famine relief. Stay safe, stay sane, be well
Actually, the report that Bob Geldof's then live in girlfriend, Paula Yates saw was by Michael Buerke, of the BBC. Bob then phoned Midge Ure of Ultravox who co-wrote and Co-produced the song, 'Do they know it's Christmas'. It was a joint effort. Though Bob was the louder driving force, Midge did just as much. They then went on to organise Live Aid in 1985.
They story is that they recorded this after one of the awards shows……that was the only way to get them all together and they went straight from the awards show to the studio and stayed up all night to finish this on their own time! It was amazing!
I remember when this was made and I felt so hopeful for the human race then. After the last couple of years here in America, I keep asking myself, "What happened?" Where did all of the hatred come from? I'm one of the youngest left of the baby boomers, but I want to encourage all of the younger people out there to make a stand for peace and tolerance. I remember that day it came out. I cried through it. I wish life was like that now. When I was younger there was a thing that was called Hands Across America! Everyone from around the world grabbed the hand next to them. My dad would not let me go. So there was a big circle of hands across America. People actually help people in need. I miss that.
Every time I listen to this song, I remember the day in Chicago when the majority of radio stations, AM and FM, played it at the same time. I was looking forward to the broadcast; it was a local event. As I listened, I switched from station to station. Just hearing the song being played on so many outlets at the same time thrilled me! It was the first time I understood that we, all humans, are connected. The diversity of the group, the message of the song, the local stations, playing as one. It was a special moment for me. I wish we would all come together like that now.
We can come together again, but not by force. If it's left alone again, left to just flow, we can get there. Those pulling the strings, will NEVER let it happen again.

Well, I'm glad to see that the artists in the US where inspired by the UK artists who raised money for Africa with "Do they Know it's Christmas ~ Band Aid 1984" and to do the same a year later on with bringing the artists in the US together for the same cause.... You should do a review on "Do they Know it's Christmas ~ Band Aid 1984" because they where the first with the idea to unite artist to help the situation in Africa, more particularly Ethiopia at that moment.

Dionne Warwick she is my favorite. Her voice in my opinion one of the most underrated singers ever. Forget the fact that so many of her family has gone on to be famous singers in their own right.

Yep. A perfect match, every voice unique yet perfectly blending w/ the ensemble, not a single 'so-so' call, at a time where there was not auto tune, real music, real singers. The UK song was cool and a fine and beautiful effort but this Quincy Jones/MJ song is IMO infinitely better, way superior from the musical standpoint, a much better vehicle for each of the unique solo voices, musically richer, soulful, warmer and much better production/recording quality.
@@teelurizzo8542 The UK one was a flurry of last minute phone calls to 100's of prominent British artists. Whoever showed up *InTime* the next day appeared on the vid and on the song. The production value is as real and as instant as can be done. The US version was organised weeks or even months in advance and the production was weeks in the making. Reality v's Hollywood slick.. I'll take the REAL over the Hollywood any day.

The Punk rock part - The Sex Pistols and the Clash etc happened and were successful DESPITE corporate (Hollywood) attempts to steal the Peoples voice. The "envy" came from the USA as the British version topped the US charts and the "We Are the World" was a direct result of that Envy. This was Americas reply to the UK's song "Do they know it's Christmas". That was a charity record written, recorded,produced in about 2 weeks led by Bob Geldorf and Midge Ure who wrote it. Lots of 80's UK stars turned up one Sunday morning to record it looking like they just fell out of bed. The record was printed at no cost and sold EVERYWHERE to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia, this was Dec '84, and the next fund raising event was Live Aid in July '85. The record ALONE raised £8 million for Ethiopia. This song We are the World, was pulled together by Quincy Jones in '85 to raise money for the same reason. Bob Geldorf went over to see the recording and got cross because they had a room with catered food in for the stars, and Bob, being Bob, was furious and pointed out the incongruity of that as money had been spent on that and they were trying to help people who were starving!
I first heard this song in music class in 3rd grade and cried whenever Bruce Springsteen sang. However, I love ALL of these artists! And I agree with y’all, this is one of the best songs ever bc it represented unity. James had hits like Just Once and had great duets with Patty Austin, Linda Ronstadt and the incredible Secret Garden song by Quincy Jones with James, El DeBarge, Al B. Sure and Barry White.
The (former) lead singer of Journey is Steve Perry. He has an amazing voice. Almost every artist has a very distinct or recognizable voice. They wanted artists who most people would recognize when they heard the song on the radio. The lady who sang with Michael Jackson is Diana Ross. The guy with the voice like a freight train is Bruce Sprinsteen (also sings with Stevie Wonder here) Don't think there will ever be a collection of talent in one room like this ever again.

He has had about 20 songs on the Hot 100 Billboard charts, 9 of which were in the top 20, and _Footloose_ reached #1, and he scored a couple of Grammys. It does surprise me that more of his songs weren't bigger hits, but to be fair, there's no denying that he was up against some titanic competition from his contemporaries in the heyday.

Fun Side note on Springsteen in this video. He had just finished two nights in a row at the carrier dome in Syracuse NY where the shows were about 3 hours long. Everyone else was brought in a Limo.

That’s how we Dirty Jersey folks roll ;)! he’s basically a god in our state :P he made a surprise appearance at a Coldplay concert on June 5th at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ and sang with Chris Martin. No one knew he was going to show up, and when they introduced him, I jumped 10 feet into the air out of my seat and nearly fainted LOL…he sang around 3 or 4 songs, some with Chris and some by himself, and you bet your butt I was scream-singing my head off the entire time. I’m 24 and the woman next to me was probably in her early 50s and we were both going wild. I find it so cool that Bruce is able to bring together multiple generations through our love of his music!

@@itscrazyal from what I recall reading at the time, Smokey actually wasn't invited to be a part of it, he just showed up because he'd heard about it through the grapevine. Nobody, not even Quincy Jones, was going to tell the great Smokey Robinson to leave, so he stayed. But all the solo parts had already been planned out in advance, so he just sang background with everyone else.

WOW!! This song is STILL extremely emotional to watch. It was a HUGE event when this was released. People were clued to their TVs to watch it. Everyone was singing it and naming the artists as they appeared on screen. This was a historic event, so many musical legends in the same place, on the same song and video at the same time. Many of them are gone now or stopped performing. Young people today missed out on some major talent, back in da day you had to know how to SAAANG, not JUST sing!! 😏

Turner for the hair, but she disappeared 30 years ago. Same for Midler with an exception for a soundtrack song. Ross basically did the same as far as the charts go, 40 years ago. Warwick was there as an ensemble but otherwise hasn't had a solo hit in about 38 years.

It really just depended on what part of the song they were given to sing. If they had a mellow and understated part then they could not really belt it out like so,e others were able to, or it would not really fit in with the words of their line.

It was the American Music Awards on Jan 28, 1985. And the sign he wrote actually said "Check your egos at the door." You were very close.
Never today would current artists be equal to the greats here. This and the UK Band Aid song Do they know its Christmas (that inspired this) highlighted the sheer musical quality of artists around in the 80s. Live Aid in 85 also showcased this.

Being an old guy who remembers when this was released, it warms my heart to see you reacting to these musical artists who could be so easily forgotten. This is such a great way to learn about all these people who continue to influence music and culture.

I remember the top artist did something similar, as in coming together to sing after 9/11 back in 2001. I'm sure top artists of today's time would come together to perform together as well if prompted. they do it all the time just for fun, especially on zoom/ video conference just for fun, so they would do it for a travesty or fundraiser
Not entirely true, but it was a good turnout. We can't really say that the "That's What Friends Are For" cast was at the top of its game. But to get this sort of turnout today, they'd first all have to appear at the awards ceremony. For that to happen, the awards ceremony would have to actually mean something again. A lot of dominoes would have to fall before we even get to ego.
I wouldn't put "True Colors" out there as a singer's song. I recommend some of her tracks from "Hatful of Stars" (1993). Kind of just out of being really famous and before kind of disappearing.

Right after MJ, when you said who was that, that was Diana Ross. This video, still to this day, features more top-level mega superstars in one song and one video than anything ever recorded before or since. Just take a look at the lineup. After Diana Ross, there was Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, etc. That's also, Huey Lewis, Steve Perry from Journey, and I believe that's actually Quincy Jones of Motown fame directing the whole thing. Talk about a star-studded cast....

I remember being a kid in the 80's and holding hands and singing this across the while school. This meant something important We sang our hearts out for starving African families.
Unfortunately, most of the kids of our generation grew up and just stopped caring. We became selfish and self centered.
The thing I remember the most from that song was there was a simulcast all over the world. Literally thousands of radio stations played the song at exactly the same time. I remember sitting with my friends and just turning the dial and it was on every station. It was just a beautiful moment of unity.
Ray Charles and Willie Nelson Seven Spanish Angels is worth a listen. It’s amazing.

This was at a time in history when I truly believe we ALL were beginning to genuinely come together. It wasn’t forced, and their was no agenda attached to it. Consciousness was think in the air. The collective awareness was blasting off. There was no “I’m better or more important than you” mentality here. Naturally, humans will come together… naturally, as we are all one! When moments like this happen, the powers that be, unfortunately, must throw a wrench into this natural advancement and human love, in order to find a way to divide and conquer. Which in itself is artificial, and an illusion. The illusion that we are apart from one another. Songs, like these, must never be forgotten about. As they are a reminder as to what we all really are, which is one infinite consciousness, connected to one another
A brief History of how this came out.
In 1983 a famine broke out in Ethiopia. A Canadian reporter broke the story. It got play in the UK.
Bob Gelolf, of the Boomtown Rats, wanted to help, so Irish and British musicians got together to perform a song called Do they know it’s Christmas, written by Bob.
David Foster, a famous music producer and writer, heard of it and thought Canada should do one. As a result Tears are not enough was recorded in the same manner as the British one. It raised 3 million dollars ( Canadian).
America followed suit and USA for Africa was done.
Geldof, an Irishman, was honorary knighted in 1990, by Queen Elizabeth the second, in 1990 for all the work he did for famine relief.

Actually, the report that Bob Geldof's then live in girlfriend, Paula Yates saw was by Michael Buerke, of the BBC. Bob then phoned Midge Ure of Ultravox who co-wrote and Co-produced the song, 'Do they know it's Christmas'. It was a joint effort. Though Bob was the louder driving force, Midge did just as much.
They then went on to organise Live Aid in 1985.
They story is that they recorded this after one of the awards shows……that was the only way to get them all together and they went straight from the awards show to the studio and stayed up all night to finish this on their own time! It was amazing!

I remember when this was made and I felt so hopeful for the human race then. After the last couple of years here in America, I keep asking myself, "What happened?" Where did all of the hatred come from? I'm one of the youngest left of the baby boomers, but I want to encourage all of the younger people out there to make a stand for peace and tolerance. The love of music is such a wonderful place to start because amazing music knows no race, religion, or sex barrier. It's just great music and it moves each of us so deeply. I remember that day it came out. I cried through it. I wish life was like that now. When I was younger there was a thing that was called Hands Across America! Everyone from around the world grabbed the hand next to them. My dad would not let me go. So there was a big circle of hands across America. People actually help people in need. I miss that.

Every time I listen to this song, I remember the day in Chicago when the majority of radio stations, AM and FM, played it at the same time. I was looking forward to the broadcast; it was a local event. As I listened, I switched from station to station. Just hearing the song being played on so many outlets at the same time thrilled me! It was the first time I understood that we, all humans, are connected. The diversity of the group, the message of the song, the local stations, playing as one. It was a special moment for me. I wish we would all come together like that now.
We can come together again, but not by force. If it's left alone again, left to just flow, we can get there. Those pulling the strings, will NEVER let it happen again.

Well, I'm glad to see that the artists in the US where inspired by the UK artists who raised money for Africa with "Do they Know it's Christmas ~ Band Aid 1984" and to do the same a year later on with bringing the artists in the US together for the same cause....
You should do a review on "Do they Know it's Christmas ~ Band Aid 1984" because they where the first with the idea to unite artist to help the situation in Africa, more particularly Ethiopia at that moment.

Dionne Warwick she is my favorite. Her voice in my opinion one of the most underrated singers ever. Forget the fact that so many of her family has gone on to be famous singers in their own right.
Dionne was Whitney Houston's auntie. Do you know the way to San Jose was great. Kenny Loggins in Footloose the movie. Great emergency for this one.
Cyndi Lauper can really sing. And you should see her now at 70. She looks and sounds exactly the same. Her skin is flawless and I love to listen to her sing. Your mom is right!

No .. The greatest collab of all time is the UK's "Do They Know It's Christmas" for the same appeal.. USA's only happened because the British one only involved British stars and the USA was pissed off they weren't involved.
Yep. A perfect match, every voice unique yet perfectly blending w/ the ensemble, not a single 'so-so' call, at a time where there was not auto tune, real music, real singers. The UK song was cool and a fine and beautiful effort but this Quincy Jones/MJ song is IMO infinitely better, way superior from the musical standpoint, a much better vehicle for each of the unique solo voices, musically richer, soulful, warmer and much better production/recording quality.
@@teelurizzo8542 The UK one was a flurry of last minute phone calls to 100's of prominent British artists. Whoever showed up *InTime* the next day appeared on the vid and on the song. The production value is as real and as instant as can be done. The US version was organised weeks or even months in advance and the production was weeks in the making. Reality v's Hollywood slick.. I'll take the REAL over the Hollywood any day.

This was Americas reply to the UK's song "Do they know it's Christmas". That was a charity record written, recorded,produced in about 2 weeks led by Bob Geldorf and Midge Ure who wrote it. Lots of 80's UK stars turned up one Sunday morning to record it looking like they just fell out of bed. The record was printed at no cost and sold EVERYWHERE to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia, this was Dec '84, and the next fund raising event was Live Aid in July '85. The record ALONE raised £8 million for Ethiopia. This song We are the World, was pulled together by Quincy Jones in '85 to raise money for the same reason. Bob Geldorf went over to see the recording and got cross because they had a room with catered food in for the stars, and Bob, being Bob, was furious and pointed out the incongruity of that as money had been spent on that and they were trying to help people who were starving!

James Ingram was such a talented singer who sang just before Tina Turner and later featured solo towards the end of the song. James had hits like Just Once and had great duets with Patty Austin, Linda Ronstadt and the incredible Secret Garden song by Quincy Jones with James, El DeBarge, Al B. Sure and Barry White.

The (former) lead singer of Journey is Steve Perry. He has an amazing voice. Almost every artist has a very distinct or recognizable voice. They wanted artists who most people would recognize when they heard the song on the radio. The lady who sang with Michael Jackson is Diana Ross. The guy with the voice like a freight train is Bruce Sprinsteen (also sings with Stevie Wonder here) Don't think there will ever be a collection of talent in one room like this ever again.
cyndi lauper has an incredible voice..... she made pop songs that didn't show off how great her voice really was AMAZING VOICE
