Vicky made DDL an asparagus and he didn't like it
The director thought it is great and shooted it and edited it in the final cut

Vicky Krieps is so good here. I always love that moment when she starts going "Yes, mister! No, madam! Yes..." and then just can't think of anything so just makes some annoyed noise. It feels so true to an actual argument, it's so well performed.

Because it was true, it was not written. She added it spontaneously and referred to the set and the actor Daniel. When she talks about "walls" etc. she meant Daniel's way of acting, always well focused and inside the character.
Definitely there was a real and emotional component.
(She revealed this during an interview)

Brilliant film. I loved it. People just got used to Daniel Day Lewis acting in films where he's over the top with costumes and accents, usually murdering people. In this film he's so...terse and crisp, precise. Vicky is like a chiropractor, wrenching, and twisting, stretching her screen partner. I was entranced by the tension and the release, the cracking of spine and joints.

They purposely show how childish he is because on the inside, he’s still a child who can’t move on until he get’s what he’s always desired, a mother. Now he doesn’t want Alma to be his mom in some sick way. He simply wants someone to hold him, caress his hair, tend for him. He’s worked hard all his life. As he said to Alma “I feel like I’ve been looking for you all my life”. He wants her to be the one who breaks him out of his routine, out of his rules, out of this lifestyle he’s trapped himself into. And Alma can see it. You can see she’s arguing with him, poking him with the butter asparagus, and yelling but not getting too aggressive because she’s thinking long term. Don’t get him too mad, just slowly push him out of his shell.

All couples argue but how you argue, whether or not you really listen to each other or you just want to get your own way , whether there is respect or not, and most importantly whether you are mature enough to hold your own responsibility for your own role in the relationship or you just want the other to babysit you
