Whoever titled this clip has no idea what they’re talking about. Everything he tells the town about mineral leasing is true both in 1911 and today. The 1/6 royalty he offers is very generous for the time, 1/8 was standard until the 1970s. And a $1,000 bonus with a 10-day Primary Term is unheard of. That means the lease expires after 10 days if undrilled, and the landowner can simply lease it to someone else.
Not to mention that a $1,000 was a hefty sum of money in that time, worth today around $33,136.42 according to inflation calculators. Any sane person would take that offer.
@@calebkarlinsky9009 Well listen, money back then was not easy to come by. We're talking about a time in which cents could make purchases, as opposed to dollars. I'm not saying that Daniel Plainview was a generous man, but I will say the amounts he was offering could set you right for a good long while.
“I have had no wife, ma’am. I found this unwanted child and brought him with me to simply make me look proper and trustworthy, ma’am. I am a snake in the grass if you will.”
The most compelling aspect of Daniel Plainview is his credibility. Everything he promises will happen…. In Little Boston, they got their church, the town did flourish, just as he said it would…. He stopped Mary Sunday from being beaten by her father and she ended up married to his adopted son HW…. Not saying he was a nice… or that he didn’t become crazy… But give him his due as a businessman…
So instead of convincing the town for the land lease, is he getting to the oil first by going further upstream with this side deal? Drinking the towns milkshake? 😋
A common selling tactic, talk about something the client values/likes. When I was selling door to door Security Alarm, you take in everything in their yard/garage/front porch. Use it to break the ice and establish a connection. If they like you they will 9 out of 10 times buy from you. He proved his professionalism/knowledge then moved on to the wife talking about children.
Hes not discussing the actual prices and returns to the community he requires, the real offer is gladed in a myriad of emotional language. People need to know the money and time.
He lawlessly kills and gets away with it, he is a crook on cheaping out the prices, and he scams by falesly advertising. I think the title is pretty accurate.
I love this movie and dont find it boring but I feel you. He is a slower director in general. If you havent, his most exciting movie is probably boogie nights. It's just long but really quiick moving.
@@pjtill1 Then I would recommend Punch Drunk Love. It has adam sandler and its very entertaining. After that I would recommend The Master, if you wanted to check more of his stuff out.

Right, cause everyone knows money is the only thing that matters in this world.....🤔

I see you didn't abandon your child
No matter how hard I try, I can't see Daniel Day Lewis.
he ain't John Cena... he's right there!
"Now, I need you to know what you want to do."
My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard!
I drink your milkshake, I drink it all. 😊
So in the end was he planning to drink the entire towns milk shake with that side deal with the family?
exactly
@@user-zp6ff2gr4n sure beats nothing at all.

Dude loves milkshakes
He won an academy award for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview. Why don't you grow up?
The way he completely disappears and what you see IS the character.
“I have had no wife, ma’am. I found this unwanted child and brought him with me to simply make me look proper and trustworthy, ma’am. I am a snake in the grass if you will.”
"I have a competition in me. I don't want to see anyone else succeed." is literally Daniel Plainviews bio on Tinder
This whole movie is a solid 💯

He tried to convince them, they won’t listen.

I think the "scamming" has to do with him using the family's deal to "drain" the town's oil.
You talk to a problem and what will happen to them if they don't do something about it rather than going in with a product to sell.
but he broke the golden rule of negotiation. he made his offer. he would not have spoken before them. its like a double text. it was their turn
@@cowboybob5301they asked the question, and you forget, he was desperate
The woman asked about his wife, she initiated the question. So whatever you are talking about, it’s irrelevant to the scene
Nah. He built the town up.
"I wouldn't take the lease if you gave it to me as a gift."
I see no scam here? He's telling the truth.

Well, first off, his entire persona of being a family man is a farse.
Scam? No. Lawless crook? Yeah
Greatest performance in any film ever
He’s a completely different person
That’s true for many of his films
The way I feel when I hear commotion and meaningless conversation. Leaving now
As a contractor, I can't deny the truth of what he says.
The ice and gravel was crazy
Hes not a crook he is a oilman
How dare you say that about my hero!
Mrs. Bankside was the female journalist in Mars Attacks who asked if the Martians had two sexes.
Two sexes "like we do" to be specific.
