Swinging Jigs For Summer Bass (Tips That Actually Matter)

- Its time to change it up! Summer is here and this technique gets BIG bites when nothing else will. Quit throwing the same old Summer baits and show them something completely different! The swinging jig is easy to fish, doesn't require specialized gear, and most importantly, the big ones eat it!
This technique goes by many names. You may have heard of the wobble head, biffle head, free swinging jig, or swinging jig... all references to the same technique. We combining the swinging jig with either a creature bait or small swimbait to create a profile that bass can't resist. As you swim it along the bottom the bait will bump along, deflecting off cover, and drawing reaction strikes from the bass.
Virtually every brand makes a creature bait that could work with this technique. However, there are a few that rise above the rest. I'm in central Florida and fish small lakes and ponds. And typically bottom is at best sand and grass. But this technique certainly works. And also works great in middle of the night.
My husband and I are NEW to Central Florida and looking forward to small pond and lake fishing. Do you have any favorites to recommend around Orlando, Winter Garden, Clermont, Oconee, etc. Most seem really large, looking for smaller public ones.

@@xDx0xUxGx have you tried reeling your reel? -_- are you powering it in at 100mph? Fish it at a speed that looks like a swimming fish. Ignore the tournament guys who fish baits at 100mph that is searching
@@ThatSB I've tried slow, medium and fast all with and without occasional pauses and occasional quick partial reel turns. I've tried deep and shallow, digging them into the bottom and off the bottom. I've also tried fishing them the same way you would quickly fish a jerkbait. For whatever reason I rarely have success with crankbaits. Almost every fish I have caught on a crankbait has been while running the bank with a squarebill.
@@xDx0xUxGx Idk I think most people consider them the easiest bait so that is surprising. It looks and swims like a fish and sets the hook for you lol. You dont even need to drag bottom just swim it and straight reel is fine too. To never get bites is strange. Maybe you are using the wrong colors for your area? But ive caught fish on damn near every color I think they just hate crankbaits waddling their way through the pond. I do best on crankbaits over the top of deep weeds. Dont worry too much about square vs round. Majority of the time it doesnt make that much difference unless you are getting hung up alot and need to get over timber in which case the square bill is better for its more gradual dive
This was the first technique I ever stumbled on that would later be confirmed by a reputable fishing program. My experience has been that I catch bigger fish in the post spawn with this rig. I believe you are right about it fooling the fish. A magnum rage bug is killer.

I had zero confidence in wobble heads before this video. Never caught fish on them and lost confidence in them. Watched the video last night, took the boat out this morning. Tied on 1/2 oz wobble head, Junebug Z-craw with dyed claws. Caught a 2# and 2.5# largemouth plus a few smaller fish using Matt's method over submerged road and railroad beds. Awesome video, awesome advice. Thanks Matt!

My top three favorite baits for a wobble head would a bandito/Rage bug,zoom Z-craw,powerbait pit boss. I could make a case for basically any plastic that can be Texas rigged. A ribbontail worm can really be deadly.

I won my first highschool bass tournament on this style hook before it got popular. I believe it was 2007. I think arkie jig made the hook. It had a ball style weight with a regular worm hook. Fishing it off island ledges and shallow flats. I remember all the adults couldnt believe i caught all my fish on that hook with a finesse worm. Great memory
Just tried this rig yesterday, and it made me a believer, first time out. I’ve used the technique deep in the winter with a Keitech fat swimbait with great success also.

Thanks Matt, I went out for the fist time in two years to a barrage in North Africa (Morocco) the water was very clear, normally it is dark so I am used to throwing spinnerbaits. Luckily I had my Lowrance with me so I noticed they are way deeper then otherwise near the bank in the shade even in the place with current there werent any reaction on my baits at all, throwing a texas rig worm / spinnerbait... so finally I caught some small bass on a dropshot, but 2 years ago I had a day of more then 50 pounds in just 13 fish (the bass here is probably Northern strain) SOOOO big thanks for this video, I gonna reorganise my floattube bags and plan my next trip!!!

Can’t tell you how good this technique actually is. I went camping at dale hollow last week, took my hobie. I did horribly for 2 days, then i started catching some small ones on a drop shot and a bitsy bug. Then for some reason i found some wobble heads and rigged one with a jordan lee berkley hd craw…with floating pincers. I started catching some bigger fish in that rocky ultra clear water. Great vid, great tips.

In europe we are using a rig similar to this called cheburashka rig. The good thing about this rig is you can attach any hook type and size you like. Have a look at it.
What an EXCELLENT video. I hung on every word, loved it! Do you absolutely need a dedicated jigging rod for this? I have several nice medium heavy fast rods. Lew's mach series and Lew's Custom Pro Speed Stick series. I'm trying not to buy another combo until Fall season.
I was throwing it then other day on the chick. Caught some big blue channel cats. No bass but I do love the bait!! Zoom z craw for me on 1/2 oz. Awesome video!!
The rugby jig+pit boss or a vile craw has (accidentally) caught me more big northern pike up here in Ontario than almost any other pike bait in the summer.
I've had a ton of days when the pike wont hit a jerkbait, wont hit a spoon, wont even wake on a spook but that 3/4oz vmc swing jig and a black/blue pit boss dragged/hopped on bottom on sand flats between weed beds is just something they cant resist...
As far as catching bass w the rugby jig I've had almost zero luck but this fall I'll be camping out on a smallmouth lake like I have been for 6 years and I'm convinced slow rolling a 3/8-1/2oz rugby jig+a keitech is going to be the golden ticket.

The two important things to watch out for are making sure the plastic is rigged straight as you would with any other rig and to not rig the plastic too far forward so that it impedes the movement between the head and the hook. Hopefully this helps anyone who needs this info in the future.
Just came across this video. Great content. I throw a lot of different trailers as well with the wobble head, but lately, I've mostly been using the rage tail space monkey.

I started using the heads that come without a hook so that I can whatever hook I want. I really like the the Zappu Bellows Hook along with some of the ewg style hooks from Ichikawa, Hayabusa and Ryugi much better than the Gamakatsu ewg. On the Gammy ewg hooks, he hook point is inline with the line tie of the hook which results in less of a gap and fewer solid hookups. By using hooks that the point extends past the line tie, you don't have to bend it up and it solves the problem of lost fish and fewer hookups.

Floating on a floating chair I drug a 1/4 oz on the bottom letting the wind drag me and the swing head with a junebug craw and caught a nice 3.8 smalley off a point in 110 degree weather in Havasu Az. before this video came out. They work great.
Awesome video! I’ve been hopping the kvd structure head with a man bear pig and caught a 4 pounder! Which is a big fish where I live. Gonna buy some of these baits for sure though. And is the mega bass brailist that much better than the 7 ft 5 medium heavy zodius? The brailist is good for all bottom right?(jigs, swing heads, texas rigs)

Great info! IMPHO, if I could only have one, I would go just abit lighter and smaller...I'd go with 3/8oz. with a 3/0 hook. 1/2 oz is abit heavy for pond bank fishing...and the 3/0 hook will facilitate the hooking typically smaller pond bass; but is still adequate for most lake fishing applications. Also, a bait company that gets so little respect and overlooked is Lunker City. Check out their creature bait - Ozmo. Awesome bait, and as good as any of these others on the market.
Theres a lure made in my area that is called a wobblehead it’s been called a wobblehead for at least 40 years it’s nothing like this swinghead jig but it’s a great technique you should try this time of year.

This one of my favorite techniques...i prefer that vmc rugby head with a a straight shank hook..i feel like i lose less fish with that hook
Tossed this a bit last summer. Over the winter I got ahold of some with skirt collars, and tied up my own old school flat rubber jigs out of it. Haven't had a chance to try them yet, but it's on the list of things to toss. The smallies up here in Canada love anything with lots of action, grubs, or when I can't find the yamamoto double tail grub, I go with the strike king rage magnum rage bug. They'll destroy a big 4.5 inch rage bug.

Have you guy's or anyone else on here tryed this technique with a Lizard.? Im thinking with the ribbon tail and legs it would get alot of action. After watching your alls vidoes for as long as I can remeber now, I finally went and picked up a casting Zodios rod this past weekend so pumped to try it after what all you all have said about them over the years.
I use the bigger Biffle Hardheads w/either a Strike King Rage Bug or Berkley Pit Boss. In sunshine, I prefer the Rage Bug in green pumpkin (claws tipped orange) or watermelon/red flake. In darker skies, murkier water, and in late winter/early spring, I use the Pit Boss in either Big Texan or Green Perfection. The best locale for this technique is LOGJAMS in the outside bends of creek backs. Bass love logjams! The key is to STROKE IT. Hop it HIGH, then let it fall back. GUARANTEED to put fish in your boat!

I haven't really thrown them on rock but I have been Flippin them into submerged and semi submerged trees and that's how I've been catching em on the wobble head with a baby paca

I use this in Michigan for smallmouth. Swagger Tungsten head with a bellows gill. Smallies crush this on rock. and I also do the exact same thing with the hook. Bending it out just a little makes a big difference

Great video Matt. In Last years wobble head vid, you were very high on the Crazzy Flapper but this year it seems to have barely made the cut, so to speak. Wondering if maybe they lose more fish due to the longer appendages? Also, does this work well in dirtier water(12-18” vis) due to all the commotion it causes? Love your content. Great channel.
They don't lose more fish, get bit less, etc... but they don't hold up to abuse. You're going to go through a LOT of keitechs on this pattern. They're deadly effective but the cost/reward influences the recommendation this year. We're constantly fine tuning and trying to give the best recommendation we can.
@@tacticalbassin - that's awesome info and thanks for the quick response. I should have thought of that as Keitechs swimbaits(even though VERY effective) don't seem to hold up to bottom dragging very well. The same plastic composition that makes them fish catchers also leaves them vulnerable to tears etc. I was amazed at how often on Shasta those Spots would bite off a tail and I didn't even feel the fish. 😂

@@southerngurlfishing2561 - Yes, and spark Shad is exactly what I use under those bottom drag situations (unless I am going tiny with a 2.8. Then I stick with the Keitech)
ZMan has a really good wobble head style hook called the Texas Eye and it’s awesome for creature style baits check them out
Hey Matt. I was looking to purchase a Braillist, but I went with the Megabass Orochi Tour Versatile as my jig rod. I kayak fish so the more versatile my rod line up is,l better due to not being able to carry as many as a boater. I think it’s an amazing rod, but Just wanted to know if you’ve ever fished it and what your opinion of the model is if you have one.

Matt, have you tried this technique using a yamamoto cowboy? That thing has a ton of kick..I may go toss that around in my pool and check it out
