      I have a genuine question.
Do you have any tics where you hurt yourself? If so, would it be better for someone to try to stop you from doing it or should they let it happen?
Again this is a genuine question. I'm not trying to offend anyone.

@@paikoateacat Hi! Yes, I have a tic where I slam my hand onto my chest. Sometimes I hit my throat which does cause me pain. I’ve had people hold my hand down which does help a bit. It does get annoying given the day or the person that is holding my fist down, however. Since I don’t have Tourette’s, (I have OCD tics), this may be different for me. But you can train yourself to stop doing tics given your circumstances. (My doctor’s words). It does depend on the person who is holding down my fist or trying to stop the tic, but I would say that it does get annoying. Again, I am speaking on personal experience and every person may be different. But I would say that the best thing to do is just to completely ignore the person’s tic. If they make a comment like “ow” it’s safe to ask if they are alright, acknowledging the tic. So no, I advise you to not stop it.
P.S, tics don’t just hurt in general. The only reason they would hurt is if you jerked your head and popped your neck or if you like me, got hurt on impact. Thank you for your question ❤️

I have chronic tic disorder, but was really close to simply having Tourette’s. I’ve taken medications for it for over half of my life although I feel as if they’re not working as well lately. The only tic I currently have is a weird throat sound, and people always think I’m laughing or coughing. I’ve always been open about it since it’s a natural thing and hasn’t necessarily ruined my life, but after explaining it to my neighbor once, she went around telling everyone I had a disease. Also unless I specifically say “CTD/Chronic Tic Disorder”, people think I’m an apartment building for insects. :D

Not everyone who has Tourette’s has verbal tics. My husband has it as well but only has the physical tics that show in the form of his shoulder twitching. When he was growing up it also caused him to frequently have seizures and medication doesn’t stop it. When he was discharged from the military, the VA dosed him Heavily on two different sedatives (one being Valium) because they thought he was faking his Tourettes. His mother had all his paperwork right there that should have proven he wasn’t faking if they had read it. Because of this three VA nurses and two VA doctors in Georgia had their medical licenses permanently revoked due to malpractice

I had a friend with Tourette’s growing up. I say don’t laugh until you are close with the person and know that they’re okay with it and also respect their emotions. Tourette’s can be funny, but it can also be a lot on a human and even things that may seem funny one day can really bother that person the next day. Respect above all should be your go to response.

He was laughing too and was even joining in on the joke. It was fun, but now looking back, I hope I wasn't pressuring him to laugh. He would laugh first, so I just thought it was okay.

I'm so glad to hear this. I just stumbled upon another video of yours a couple minutes ago, where you had ticks with rice and I got rice. And... it made me laugh. I just thought that the way you say it is really funny, especially because it's not a planned thing. But I did feel bad laughing about it as well, because I imagine it must be annoying at times to have the ticks just happening, without being able to do anything about it. It's not nice to laugh about something like that. But the rice line is just... funny. So I was feeling very conflicted / guilty about it.
So... yeah. I'm glad to hear that you think it's ok to laugh at the funny, not harmful/painful ones, like the rice.
The chest pounding on the other hand wasn't funny at all. I hope it isn't as bad as it sounds / looks and you don't hurt yourself badly when having ticks like that.

I felt this way when I used to not have great control of my autistic stims. I was good at being quiet with them, but not when I felt I "needed" to do it. I used to randomly kind of sing-say the letters "E", "H", and "M" in different ways and tones whenever I was happy or confused or frustrated. It made a lot of people smile for no reason, and since it was just me blowing off mental/emotional steam, I didn't mind if they thought it was funny. It was slightly awkward, but it was low-key a win-win situation. At least for me! I'm very aware autism and tourette's are two totally different experiences.

I've been diagnosed with a tic disorder, not tourettes specifically, but I noticed no one has answered you, and this is a good question, so I'll give you my experience. Also, I love your intention and concern, and I dont see it as rude, but it is definitely good for you to ask. For me, somebody else trying to stop a tic (either by holding me still or blocking the target zone if I'm hitting myself) will usually keep it going and it will likely intensify at least until the tic can be fully completed to whatever sensation satisfies. I never had someone try for long because I would ask them not to but if it was longer I could see an attack possibly triggering similarly to when I've held them in myself for a long time and either get overwhelmed or finally release.
