  • hi everybody!
i filmed this a couple weeks ago showing what its like being in public when my tics are more severe. i had been having a more calm spell so this was a pretty vocal day for me compared to the past few weeks. i just wanted to show how it can take a toll on my mindset, i manage pretty well but its difficult having attention drawn to myself that i have no control over, i'd rather just shop in peace!
not every shopping trip is like this, some days i dont really have any issues and can go by unnoticed, but the severity of tourettes waxes and wanes.
if you see someone in public with a visible difference, please try not to stare. smile at us, it makes me feel so accepted.
    hope you learnt something xx

Same! To all of this! If someone thinks rudely of something thats clearly hard/impossible to control or supress like fuck them i had someone in my class in highschool with a head turning eyebrow raise tic i knew he wasnt doing it on purpose but I forgot about tourettes till later and i assumed thats what it was (eventually his girlfriend told me in a normal conversation) idk if he had any other tics but i know he was self conscious about it and if i someone who didnt even think about tourettes can come to the conclusion its a medical problem he cant control idk why others cant do that yknow? Sorry i just hate others feel like they cant leave the house because of their tics

I just wanted to say thank you for understanding having tics is very stressful on the body I don't have tourettes but do have autism and when I get excited I have tic that cause me to squeak witch I can hold back most time but I can't control motor tic were I will hit the left side of my head on the top of my shoulder and yes it's as painful as it sounds sometimes depending on how much I may not able to move as it causes a great deal of pain to my eyes and 80% results in some kind of a headache ranging from mildly to extreme depending on how many times I've hit my head

      SO TRUE.
we didn’t intentionally plan it like this, but my family got our dog when my FND was particularly awful. i had a lot of involuntary movements in my body and they were so painful, but my dog always greeted (and still greets) me with a wagging tail regardless. even though she’s not a service dog, she has seemed to recognize ways to “interrupt” when some of my disabilities are interfering and it’s so cute how she interacts with me differently in those moments

I have breathing and facial tics and sometimes I swing my arms like I’m trying to hit something out of the air. Usually it only happens at home where I don’t have to repress them anymore but I had a moment the other day when I was in public where I just couldn’t hold it in anymore and I couldn’t leave. I luckily had a fidget ring in my purse and that helped a little bit but my faces couldn’t be stopped and I got stared at by this woman. I apologized for disrupting her day and told her it doesn’t usually happen in public and she said well maybe you should just stay home next time then. I was appalled. I cried the whole way home. It was more embarrassing than the tics.

She was disrupting her own day by choosing not to mind her own business and be a decent human being. She should stay home if she’s too sensitive to handle the fact that not everything can be what she wants it to be. If something like that effects random strangers, it’s their problem.

As politely as possible, to hell with that woman. She does not know what it’s like to be you and at times like this, I can only hope karma teaches her a lesson in humility and understanding others. She’s “lucky” to live life where problems can go away by sweeping them under rugs and locking them behind doors but the way she chooses to live her life is not the way you have to live yours. For all we know, her life may be full of valid miseries that she feels she can’t share with the world. Maybe not. Either way, we all deserve compassion, even if we’re ignorant buttheads like that woman. I pity that she feels so little for others.

I would say there's nothing wrong with your reaction. You were startled, looked around for what happened, found out it was a person with tourette's and you proceeded not to judge, stare, talk about them under your breath/to other people or anything of the sort. I mean yeah it's not nice when people turn to look at you all the time, but at the same time if the tics are sudden and take people by surprise then there's not really anything anyone can do, y'know? Thank you for showing what even just a "simple" errand like shopping can look like for someone with a disability. I feel like we need to be more vocal about things like this. My family doesn't understand so when I say things like, "I need a shower, but I'm not sure I can take one" they don't understand that it's literally because my body has no energy to be able to do the task. So frustrating. I'm not some slob that can't take care of themselves...it's actually really difficult and takes so much energy. Evie, I just adore you. I've been watching you since I was pregnant and my son turns 2 this year.
Idk why but lately your long-form videos like this (I mean as opposed to the tiktoks bc I know you have much longer videos than this too) make me tear up almost every time I watch them! I can't even tell what kind of crying it is, happy or sad because I have so many feelings as I've watched your progress for better or worse over time, but I just feel so proud that I get to see you/be a part of your community. I also find myself actually worrying if you're doing okay mentally (well physically sometimes too!!) after I see videos like this where you're super active or having a really hard day. I've been through a lot in my life and I just can't believe the strength and positivity you exude at the young age you're at.
I'm probably at least 10 years older than you and I just feel like I can't even compare to your peaceful and positive energy. Anyway I don't know that you'll ever even see this, but I just wanted to tell you how amazing I think you are, and how lucky I feel that you share as much with us as you do. It's not like we deserve or you owe us as much as you even do share, but I'm so glad you do.
I just wanted to say thank you for somehow making life a little better for so many people. Even when I'm watching through a lump in my throat blinking back tears half the time, everything you put out leaves me feeling better than I did when I clicked it, and that's more than I can say about pretty much everything else on the internet right now.
We don't deserve you, Evie 💕

Brings back memories of the supermarket trip from "John's Not Mad". That was a fair while back, when people in general had no idea about Tourette's. How to say my next bit correctly....his mother had great difficulty figuring out how to navigate the his condition and the situation.
Your mother absolutely leads with her heart, as do you. Faith in humanity restored. Once again.
Thinking about John, and seeing the moment when someone recognised you, it reminded me again of what an impact your videos have. There will be so many more people now who would recognise tics as a possible symptom of Tourettes, understand better and stare less.
Briefly, and I swear this is not a humblebrag but instead an example. In the compound where I live there is a guy who shouts/screams somewhat regularly. I never saw him, only ever heard him. I thought it was odd, as did my wife. At some point she saw him going into the building and realised that he has some kind of condition which compels him to shout when entering/exiting the building. Might be in the area of Tourettes or might be OCD. But once she told me that, it completely changed the way I internally react to his shouting. There's no friction now, no "does he HAVE to do that?" because of course, now I know the answer is "Yes. He does."
So awareness of this really does make a real difference. Thank you, as always, for sharing your experience and your incredibly positive outlook.

I just remembered that a friend I had many years ago had compulsive behaviour (is that what it's called in English 🤔) and she would space out and do things over and over again. One time at a festival, she was so embarrassed cause she had a really bad day. I ended up jumping up and down and waving my arms like crazy next to her, so people would stare at me instead 😅

It’s cute seeing your dog chill around you when you tic. My dog used to run away but this one time I was having a tic where I would hit my chest and I was getting it a lot that day and she kept sitting on me so I couldn’t hit myself. It was unusual for her to stay on my lap without running off to get a toy or something but she was just calmly sitting, it was a very sweet moment. Since then she’s been a lot calmer around the tics. I find it interesting that dogs can kinda tell when you’re not doing ok and try to help, I love them :)

Thank you for this. My seven year old son has tourettes. This has been the first year. His tics began with throat noises and have now progressed to body jerks and swearing.
His school teacher has been very helpful and understanding.
He has been to a neurologist and had EEGs run. He is taking medication, which helped for a short period of time.
Your video is helpful to we parents because of the variety of tics Nikolas has that come and go. Some even appear painful.
    Bless you on your journey.

I wish I could show my son this video. He is so nervous going in public and people seeing his tics. He says his Tourette’s “makes me do weird movements that you shouldn’t do, like a little kid.” He doesn’t mind small twitches that people won’t notice, but he fights so hard to suppress bugger ones. He ends up with a massive headache. 😔 I keep telling him all about you and Ellie. I tell him that you both go out and live your lives. You don’t let your Tourette’s control your entire life. Thank you for being such an inspiration to younger kids with Tourette’s. ❤️

I knew a girl in college ("high school") who has Tourette's and went to work in Tesco (large supermarket chain). She had vocal tics, including a similar sound to the squeaking noise you were making. It didn't bother the locals after they realised what/who it was, but I live in a tourist area and it used to scare the heck out of the tourists.
