We do this still at my grocery store where I work- market32 in upstate ny.
Kroger use to do it and still encourages it from corporate but then local managers yell at you after you do it so you just stop even attempting going the extra mile anymore because the local store managers are too cheap to hire enough employees.
Courtesy Clerks. It was my first job and it was an amazing time back in the 90s. $4.15 an hour plus tips. You could make good cash doing it if you were friendly and ambitious. The good old days for sure.
Chadtronic and Brutalmoose has summoned me here.
It's true. This lady is savage af.
I love these 80s/90s training vids.
As a former supermarket employee myself (I worked at Zallie's ShopRite of West Berlin, NJ), I find those new hire training videos to be the best part of the orientation process. I can still remember the Wakefern videos had to watch on my first day, and that was back in 1997!
“HEY YOU SERVICE DESK, CAN YOU GET SOMEBODY OVER HERE?!”
holy fuck that bagger at 6:39 delivers the most sass I've ever seen
This is amazing!!! That cashier is fantastic!
Unfiltered Joan is my hero.
All this customer-first malarkey has had a negative impact on society over time. People these days feel they can abuse cashiers as if they are a machine or slave, not another human being.
Most cashiers barely say hello now
@@chillydawgg4354 Exactly. Walmart, Aldi and all the bottom-of-the-barrel stores that came in lowered the bar for everyone and now no stores give decent customer service. It’s like living in Eastern Europe.
@@chillydawgg4354 with how much outright hostility they encounter from customers can you blame them lol
I was waiting for this comment, I remember 20 years ago when I heard this same line in conversations
BINGO and the nicer you the louder they tend to get with threating arm swinging. If any customer did that I would beat their AS*, No more nice, they all suck
My brain is having a hard time fully acknowledging how amazing this is.
I just LOVE being nice to people! This is awesome! The next time someone yells at me I'll just remember customer's first! I love being yelled at!😆😆
I can't stop watching this gem! 🤣I learn something new every time! Just realized as Joan's screaming at the service desk with the guy asking for sale price, Steve knows what's up and pulls out a newspaper haa
I'd be dying laughing if I was watching this on orientation day. Probably would have gotten fired. That cashier lady too funny. Actually I wouldn't mind her ringing up my groceries. I would be prepared in advance. Thanks for posting this video.
Least she would be honest with you.....that's all I really ask for.
I'd be pissed if I was behind the illiterate in the express lane and she let him go
You know damn good and well that the old fucker was back the next week using the express lane despite going over the limit.
When I was pregnant and my hormones were running amok, I made a lady get out of the grocery store express lane with too many items. She flipping got out of line. I don't have that kind of nerve anymore.
@@eydie57 My pregnant wife at the time was with me and the same thing happened in the express line. My lovely wife said "WTF man...what's with the 30 items!?" The entire line behind us agreed!
Been shopping at Jewel my whole life and had a few friends even work there over the years. Love everything about this video, especially the actors Chicago accents lol. The bagger has the best, thickest one
I would never work with costumer service, but for some reason I love to watch those training videos.
Work in retail
Am OK in it.
I like know this shit, except we don't use coupons and all. Or paper checks. They ain't a thing where i live.
But I am bored during all the talks about what we need to do. Cause i know it. Still, i somehow like these.
@@dutchik5107 damn where do you work? The extreme couponer people are a piece of work. Lol
@@wweandy123 the netherlands. And in stores that do sometimes have A coupon. Sometimes it is just automatically discounted, without coupon. Sometimes you have to scan the coupon. But that extreme couponing is not possible where Iive, due to lack of coupons.
And my store has none at all, but is really cheap. So you get more people complaining about prices.
I don't work in costume service either.
it is actually more hellish than it looks
i want this to be a show. i fell in love with the characters.
"They were there. Together."
I still want to know everything about that
I worked at Jewel way back. It was fun to watch this, thanks for posting it!
I love how the people are taking notes!😂
Hey, once they're bagged, I'm done. (Say with swagger)
(really cool voice)
"You dare ask me for paper bagging hardware? Surely you're joking."
This is the best part of the video. Dude delivered that line perfectly.
OMG does this bring back the terror of 10 years in the grocery business doing every position accept produce.
There’s always a “Joan” in every retail store!😂😂
Don't forget about the "Steve"
Im the Joan of my store, hate most of my fucking customers and the actual store. My co-workers are cool though
"Next week; Joan vs Karen, the battle of a lifetime, only on PBS!"
Where i work, our "Joan" is called Lise 😂
Joan and Steve has great on screen chemistry! Especially when doing the “what not to do” bits lol
4:40 she says a customer unknowingly makes a mistake, 5 seconds later customer says “so what” so he wasn’t unknowingly
Yes, this exact approach has clearly been adopted in almost every supermarket in the UK.
That opening banger! Makes working at Jewels into a television show you want to be the star of! Iconic honestly
4:45 lost my shit at this interaction. When she started throwing everything back in his cart 🤣
Same 🤣 she wasnt screwing around
Lmao I relate to these people. I love the "harsh" side they show to customers. As previously being in a grocer cashiering job for 3 miserable years. This is so true! I hated the ones especially that had WIC cards and f**ked up the systems with items not specified that the card covered.
Well here i am watching this 30 years later after the film was produced, I'm in the uk and this film is american and I really enjoyed watching this video..📹, how times have changed with online shopping, however I prefer the traditional way with beautiful department stores and well dressed staff as I saw in this video. I have saved this video as I want to watch it again.
Wow what a gem indeed!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
2:58 You can tell Steve needs to do something to hide his laughter from Joan’s screaming. 😂
Canned bean sprouts?
don't knock em
Another Quality Product we are Proud to Carry!
HA
Bean sprouts are in produce dumb asses there are no canned bean sprouts thats why this grocery syone exust no more. Customers are IDIOTS!
@@michaelbertram5095 ok except that canned bean sprouts are a thing so...
Best Rosanne episode yet.
He knew damn well the express lane is ten items or less.
They usually do!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fewer 😂
🤭😂😆🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You know he will put this stunt again in the future
Ask the fker if he forgot how to read and count
I started buying groceries at Jewel back in the 80's. The most soul crushing experience ever. Those ugly uniforms, the angry employees, so glad to be far and away from any Jewel in any decade.
All of that is true. Most of them have retired by now (within the last 10-15 years). Jewel was a smaller order/convenience store for us (90s-late 2000s). Cub Foods was our go to for big orders. We got used to Jewel over time, after Cub left Chicago (can't blame them). Some locations are worse than others.
@@mrnasty02106 True. We’ve had a Jewel in our town where a lot of employees have been there 10-40 years. It’s nice, but also a bit sad to see. The constant revolving door of dead eyed baggers never changes lol.
@@dogshake You're right about the baggers. That's not what it used to be. I know a few Jewels that (somehow) went belly up. One on Belmont (NW Side) and Burr Oak/Vincennes. I bet you it's the management.
The theme song would have made number one if Whitney had sung it !
jamie whitehead Or Madonna
Hey, I showed this to my family and I found out I’m related to the extra girl who sits at the table with the glasses!
4:58 the bagger kid cracking me up how he beckons the guy, “cmon, you know your role”
The guy at 1:27 looks like a relative of the meat cutter guy from the Old Country Buffet training video.
Is it the same guy?
It’s confirmed, same guy.
@@neil12011 I knew it!!!!
Did you catch the game last night?
@@CountOrlok89 I did! Do you like hot fudge sundaes?
Uhh if a customer asked me for paper bags after I already bagged groceries in plastic I would've definitely done the "wrong" approach, probably even worse
Sounds like someone is chit out of luck. Better luck next time
6:40 this part had me rolling!!!
I enjoy these videos so much with no purpose, it's so much fun ♡
Now I will be singing that jingle all day long. Thank you.
The cashier with zero chill isn’t the hero we all want, but is definitely the hero we need.
Old Country Inn brought me here. There is so much potential.
I lost it at “good morning, would you like a cart?”
