  • Thailand's opposition parties trounced their military-linked rivals in the May 14 polls but there is uncertainty in the formation of its next government and the appointment of its future prime minister. Dr Duncan McCargo, Director of the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies at the University of Copenhagen, shared his thoughts on these developments.

The young generation of Thailand want their country to be more modern and achieve economic growth with IT technology and better jobs , equality in live and making money to have a better future!!! I heard some Thai people here say they like both Singapore and Malaysia and their governments because they are stable and strong since the politicians are all mostly civilians and the military isn't allowed into politics at all!!!

      True but different for Thailand
      Too immature for Western democracy

So, Thai military is following Myanmar junta’s footsteps in writing the Thai Constitution with one fourth of uncontested military presence in the Senate. I sincerely hope it will not be too difficult to rewrite the Thai Constitution without military presence after seeing how Myanmar is now faring.

Type of ruling a country called “Democracy” it’s mean the country govern by “the People” through elected representatives and elected prime minister that votes by all of citizens. “Vote”meaning you choose the leader like the president by yourself not appointed by one party.

The two opposition parties really believe in the same things, just the Move Forward Party was willing to say it and make it their platform. The people wanted real change and not just handouts. The political instability comes from one group of people in Thailand and it has always been the Royalist and their military allies.

One never know what the military leadership or monarch will react after being defeated in Thailand political system, they are very fond of using military violence to over write election result not in their favor or political party aligned with them. Its democracy is constantly facing challenges from Army leaders and monarch in the past, people clear choice in this election may not pan out with a new government that can stay long enough to make a difference in Thailand future.

The shortcoming of Prof. Duncan's analysis is his failure to put the Thai politics within the international politics framework. The key aim of foreign intervention is to make Thailand an anti-China like the Taiwan province or anti-Russia like Ukraine.
