The fact that having the voice actors' names next to each option in a character creator isn't an industry standard is so upsetting to me.
Why would I care about that?

@@manuel0578 Basically a trend that came over from Japan. Their VA's are basically celebrities and then people here in the west also started caring about VA's used mainly in games and anime (though honestly I think anime dubs for most part are just horrendous).
The Avatar voice options are crazy to me because I learned about the VAs themselves and got familiar with their line of work YEARS after I played Xenoblade X (I was like 15 when it came out) so looking back at the list, it's really cool that I'm super familiar with each one of them and I can name multiple roles that they've all played (almost all have been in Fire Emblem). Having them all in this one place together is wild.
I went wide-eyed when Akechi first spoke to Sae in P5 because it felt like seeing an childhood friend (whom I have 400+ hours with) make it to TV.
I feel like you're underselling how much Cross talks in battle it's definitely more than grunts and the lines themselves change depending on which voice you pick.
Having said that Rebel is absolutely the best personality!
Something else I love about X's character creator are the hints towards one of the game's big twists. If you know you know. Exiting the character creator even puts it right in front of your face, but most players won't even notice!

XCX has the best OST of ANY of the Xenoblade games imo. Might be because I'm so nostalgic about it, but it just captures a super cool vibe that the others games don't. 🤷♂️

I also was shoked when I saw they put the names of the VA's on the character creator, a great detail. I went with Yuri Lowentall on my character because I like Marth's voice (I didn't played X until 2020)

Personally I hope they add Harry McEntire (Noah from 3) and Skye Bennett (Pyra/Mythra from 2) to the remake, even if that's unlikely

I do like that they credit the voice actors in this, and that people can admire the work they put into it. This makes me excited to try the game and the bits of detail like that is always nice to have.
Now just imagine if they add just one more VA from Los Angeles into the mix. Aleks Le with his voice from Solo Leveling.

When the game was originally released, I legit spent over an hour on customizing my character, but that might be in part that XCX was the first game I played that had character customization.
I also spent over an hour or two. Then I realized this is going to be quite an experience. I hadn’t had a creator this detailed before the last one mainly for me was KOTOR.
In 2016 I gave myself Robbie Daymond's Studious voice cuz I saw myself as a nerd and thought it was fitting. In late-2022/early 2023, I played and finished Persona 5 Royal, and now whenever I go back to playing X, I can't stop hearing Akechi out of my character
Something I really like about X's character creator is you can clearly see Kunihiko Tanaka's (character artist for Xenogears and Xenosaga episode 1) style in our custom avatars. One of the hairstyles is just like Maria's from Xenogears, for example.
I only wish it wasn't so dictated by which base you choose. There would be times where there'd be a hairstyle and a face that couldn't be matched together, and I'm hoping they give players a little more freedom.
I thought you'd mention how the voice you choose determines the MC's personality,
With character specific dialog based on which voice you choose.
Like how one voice makes you Sarcastic, and another serious or optimistic ECT.

People in this comment section seem to assume the bust slider is confirmed to be cancelled. That is *misinformation*!
While yes, the store page does say the game is based on the American release, this likely means that it will include all of the game's DLC. Remember that the store pages are always written in Japanese first.
It could really go either way and nothing is confirmed yet.
If it does it's likely the Japanese version will remove the censorship. And because it's being based off the Western version of the game, it's also then likely that the Japanese version will have an english language option. Only issue is if people decide to buy the Japanese version for the uncensored version. Then they will be playing on Japanese servers and will have tons of lag.
If I remember correctly, the Tokyo Mirage Sessions port was based on the international release, and in Japan they even got the international version; censorship and all. So if this is based on the international version I wouldn't hold out hope on the bust slider being included as some odd DLC or other

Considering the Switch port of Tokyo Mirage Sessions has been censored in Japan as well, I won't hold my breath.

I can't unhear Haseo from .hack//G.U., which is ironic since just like our player character, Haseo can also wield multiple weapons
I've not played X so didn't realise it listed voice actor options in the character creator. Genuinely love to see that.
I have always liked customizable characters in games. It's just neat to put yourself in a fictional world created by the devs. So, having one in a Xenoblade game is quite interesting.
Can't wait to make myself "canon" to the Xenoblade universe and learn more Mira and the characters.
For me all games should have customizeable characters nowadays, specially ones with online features.

As an LA voice actor I just wanna say it really warms my heart to hear this and see all these amazing comments about voice acting - and in particular voice actors who are my peers and in some cases, people I'm fortunate enough to even be able to call my friends. I should add this:
The Avatar in X speaks whole sentences to each character individually after battles, yells out SEVERAL different whole sentences instructing other members for Soul Voices, has unique sentences for entering and exiting skills, etc
They have a LOT of lines; I'm not sure why Derrick downplayed it like that.
The voices all have wildly different personalities too and they're listed in the creator (studious, joker, etc)
No two actors have the exact same lines. They're all completely different

This video is how I found out that Lorenz and Caspar from Fire Emblem Three Houses have the same voice actor. I would never have thought that. That's amazing.

nice to see you putting the names into context because i recall reading the names and recognizing basicly a couple of voicees back in the day, but this list shows how they really went all in for a huuuge open world with alot of player choice in a way that i think probably stands up to todays games (but if DE gets QOL for stuff, especially fetch quests its even better).
I like being able to create your own character. It’s how you imagine yourself as the main character in the game. I always picked the same male from the beginning and pair him with classic voice. Think they the perfect combo.
What’s not said is that your character talks to others during battle.
Classic character usually says something like “I feel so futile” and Irina says “what! Get this guy back to boot camp!”
Plus the character L says “oh! Do I detect a British accent? Pip pip old Bean!”
We all got unique body proportions, so I want the slider to have body part sliders. I am a beefier dude who has bigger arms, calves and thighs for my weight / height but on the flip side a smaller torso. Having those options and sliders are good, and is body positive.
Apart from the online element, the character creator is a fitting choice for this game for story reasons that I won't spoil here. It justifies even the most "ridiculous" customization options in the selection.
In every xenoblade video people keep complaining about "anime" elements as a negative or off-putting, focusing on english dub as the only viable option to enjoy the game. Q: What are you doing playing jrpgs if all you want is skyrim looking games?
Is like complaining about american elements and being picky about iapanese dub in marvel movies.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn's voice is even more well known as the singer for most Akira Yamaoka's songs in games such as Silent Hill, the Medium and Shadow of the Damned
In my first playthrough I went with Yuri Lowenthal’s voice. When I realized that he voiced Simon in Gurren Lagann AND that there’s a giant drill super weapon in the game, I definitely had some fun customizing one particular Skell
What i love most about the customization in this game that a lot of games don't have is the ability to have functional gear and then make yourself look cool with the fashion gear without changing the stats
While I wouldn't complain if the character creator was effectively unchanged, it would be nice to have even more stuff packed in there. Memes about the chest slider aside (and even then it's practically commonplace in character creators nowadays, I don't see why we can't have a slider or two for overall physique guys please let me make my character less front-heavy the default we were stuck with in the og game was huge) it'd be nice to see a couple more voices and some more options when throwing together their face and whatnot.

The character creation was very crazy I remember that in early 2016 when I first played when the French language text update finally released . Back then in the NTSC version we didnt had French language in the game and I wasnt good enough in English so was playing my games in french still . Unlike today where I play all my games and watch all my shows and movie mostly in english , ahhhhhh what a complete turn around
But yea to get back on the topic , I wish the character creation had more unlockables as well though
En tant qu'Allemand (nous n'avons souvent pas de très bons doublages pour les jeux), je peux comprendre que l'on mette la langue en anglais si le jeu est à l'origine en anglais, mais pour le texte, je ne comprends pas vraiment pourquoi les gens ne le laissent pas dans leur langue maternelle. Et j'aurais vraiment aimé que nous ayons la piste audio japonaise en DLC pour ce jeu, au moins ici en Europe. Les versions américaines des jeux japonais me font souvent mal aux oreilles, car les acteurs américains parlent souvent de manière exagérée, comme s'ils doublaient un dessin animé pour enfants...
@@noisykestrel pour moi (allemand ayant grandi à Bruxelles, donc bilingue) il y a plusieurs raisons pour jouer les jeux en anglais. Les jeux de mon enfance, je préfère les jouer en allemand ou en français (ça dépends dans quelle langue je les ai joué d'abord), mais il y avait toute une période où les jeux japonais ont été traduits de la traduction anglaise dans les autres langues européennes, et du coup la qualité de la traduction était mixte. Puis, la plupart des jeux sont seulement doublés en anglais, et je préfère avoir le doublage et les textes du jeu dans la même langue. Finalement, la plupart des jeux modernes n'ont plus d'option de changer la langue du jeu indépendemment de langue de la console, et j'ai pas envie de changer la langue du système à chaque fois que je change de jeu... Du coup, mes consoles depuis la Wii U sont en anglais, et mes jeux aussi.
Je dois quand-même dire que la qualité des doublages allemands et anglais/américains s'est fortément améliorée ces dernières années, et puis devoir exagérer par exemple les prononciation (un problème surtout avec les doublages allemands) c'est surtout une convention de l'industrie, qui n'a rien à voir avec les compétences des acteurs. ^^'
It's also worth mentioning that the voice you pick for your avatar also affects the animations you get for certain emotes. The Laugh, Celebrate and Acknowledge animations are completely different, meaning that the Japanese version actually has three more emotes that the rest of the world doesn't get, since that had three more voices than the English dub.
That aside, I came to really love the character creator in X! Especially with the sheer amount of outfits you can get with fashion gear. Redesigning my Cross about a year ago actually even helped me figure out some things about myself.

The new release is based on the western release, so it will still have the same censorship. In fact, they went and added new censorship on top of it.

In the original japanese version of the game they actually had 10 voices for each gender, not just the 7 that the west got. I really hope that the localization team is able to go the extra mile this time and finds VAs for those six voices we never got.

I am loving all the XCX content from you recently. I must have watched your original review 15 times before the actual game released in 2015, and you spoke exactly to what I ended up loving about it. It's great to be basking in the XCX sunlight again, haha.
The voice acting in xenoblade x is great. I'm hoping they add more voices such as Rex's and Noah's voice actors. Also hoping they add more hairstyles and hair colors cuz there's literally no way to get a good blonde color

As soon as I saw Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, I wanted her to voice my avatar. She has been around since the 90s. I remember watching a bunch of anime on Saturday Anime on the Syfy Channel. Good times.
I also loved having the VA's mentioned! I picked Yuri Lowenthal because I was on a Bayonetta kick at the time and loved Luka. This was before I really knew that a lot of these VA's were in other stuff other than Yuri and Adam Howden. I totally forgot Ben Diskin was in this until I went back recently; I might pick him for my Definitive Edition playthrough since I love him as Young Xehanort lmao
I'm excited to play this when it's released. I do prefer ready made characters mostly, but I think this is a refreshing change. I also like that fact that we have American voices for a change, and I say this as a Brit who absolutely ADORES the variety of VA in the other Xenoblade games. The key, for me, is quality and variety that suits the setting. Kudos to Monolithsoft localisation for this.
But one question tho, how many black hairstyles the game has?
Just like the first time, I'm going to spend soooo much time on the character create screen.
One thing that's exciting about the character creator here in XCXDE is that they can actually add more VAs from the rest of the Klaus trilogy of Xenoblade, like Pyra/Mythra, Nia, Rex, Mio, Noah, Taion, Sena, Eunie, etc.
I know that goes against the direction they went with in X but I'd still be very cool as options.
I hope MonolithSoft does this! Keep the X content coming Derrick!

Bryce Papenbrook WON'T go away ever since 2012. So, yeah, I'm quite familiar with him. Yuri Loewenthal, I know him through Ben 10 where he played the main man himself. I'm a fan of Lee Morris work just not one of her as Morgana tho. Wasn't really convinced that was a boy.
I have not played the original, so Definitive will be my first run.
I want to make my avatar look like Fei Fong Wong or Citan Uzuki from Xenogears, if the options exist.

I honestly loved the character creator in XCX. Combined with the armors and outfits, I could get a cute and badass character.
During the video of the character creator I noticed subtle and not so subtle nods towards other 'Xeno' games. Like some of the hair styles. Or the red X from Xenogears. If the definitive version does change the character editor at all, besides upping the graphic fidelity and plastic-y -ness of the characters~ I would really like to see Fei Fong Wong's crazy hairstyle added as an option.
This game is what made me discover and love Keith Silverstein. Also seeing Cristina Vee on the list back in 2015 was a surprise to me because I hadn't realized how big she had gotten by then. Prior to that I mostly remember her doing a lot of collaborative work with indies, like her vocal performance for the English version of Bad Apple.
Side note: I wonder if we'll get an updated soundtrack like we did with XC1DE.
I always appreciated the names of the voice actors being listed in-game, even to this day I'm surprised more games don't follow suit.
Sure the actual aesthetic choices weren't suuuper impressive even for the time, and it'll always be a bummer that you can play as an old man but not an old woman, but I can never fault the voices

The character creation was pretty good; for what it was, and I appreciated how side quests let us have some pretty snarky personality options lol
This game is perfect for roleplaying, and I love how I've been able to build one of the most complete characters in the series from the literal absence of a protagonist. It's not just a customisable character, I'm really attached to him now I see him as a character in his own right with his own personality and the other online characters as colleagues.
I do hope that they expand options on the character creator with the Definitive Edition, seeing how limited i've seen with the original.
The best thing about the Avatar in this game is the fact that you aren't some destined chosen one or whatever like Fire Emblem LOVES doing.

As a huge fan of Ace Attorney, I had to do a double take when you said Kira Buckland voices Trucy, because I legitimately do not remember hearing her talk in any of the games, she doesn't have a spoken speech bubble sound as far as I remember. It must have been in a cutscene given that they introduced actual voiced cutscenes in aa5 and 6, but it's funny to be reminded that they have voice actors despite 99% of Trucy's dialogue in the games being the classic Ace Attorney text sound lol
The online was more than recruiting other people as NPCs, you could also play with other players in 4 player co-op missions.

I wish more create a character modes just listed out the voice actors along with the vague descriptions. Because, for me at least, saying Christina Valenzuela is the voice says more to me than “peppy” does

I used Kate Higgins i plan on useing her again she was funny made me laugh "topple yo the morning to ya" in just a cheerful voice as the giant monser was just stuck on the ground wiggling around xD was my very first Xenoblade game im so hyped to play it again

I remember spending like 20 minutes deciding with my brother which voice to pick only for them to almost never speak lol
I was pretty stoked back in the Wii U days when I learned that Adam Howden was one of the pickable voices in Xenoblade Chronicles X since his performance in the original Xenoblade Chronicles was just so memorable to me. Naturally, that was the voice I picked for my character. However, the fact that the voice was only ever heard inside battles and that the main character just never spoke in the story was definitely a deal breaker to me. I absolutely loved Xenoblade Chronicles X, but the story really left me unimpressed, because it didn't feel like the main character was a participator in it. Instead, it just felt as though I was controlling an empty husk.
I would have preferred either controlling Elma as the main character, or having the main character get at last minimal story dialog. I know that full voice acting wasn't on the the table with the amount of voices to choose from, but I think even just throwing in standard lines here and there would've gone a long way. They could've done stuff like "yeah", "no", "alright", "let's do this", "we got this" etc. Standard lines that they could've simply reused in lots of places without them being tied to specific story beats. I especially disliked how the game always used these dialog selections for the MC in story cutscene where the game was paused, including the music, until a choice was made. I think they tried to make these appear more important than they really ware. In the end, due to the nature of the MC, they always just ended up feeling like hot air to me. I think this alone could get so much better just from adding these proposed standard dialog lines.
The fun thing is, you can completely play the entire game as Elma, controlling her as the main character.

Because of all the MMO-like elements and multiplayer, it would be really weird if we didn't have custom characters and every party was made up of the same main character 4 times.
I knew Kate Higgins more for Pascal in Tales of Graces and picked her in my first playthrough
Unfortunately, the removal of the breast slider in the Western version (well, now in all versions) is still massively disappointing, especially after games like CP2077, Baldur's Gate 3 or Dragon's Dogma 2 had no issue with it. As someone playing a male avatar, it won't matter to my experience, but for female players it's an essential option that's just missing for bad reasons.

I hope that they keep the slider in the international release of Definitive Edition this time. Having a bust slider in XBX's character creator is FAR more tame than all the ecchi stuff that they were more than happy to pack into XBC2.

It's stupid like how Dragon Age Veilgaurd talks about being inclusive cause they added surgical scars yet the breast and butt slider at max still still has the character flat chested so people with bigger busts and butt sizes end up being excluded.
@@ChrisMS0815 Having more diverse customization would be good, including making the sliders actually do something, but most of the people mad at Dragon Age Veilgard having a scar option just want that option removed which goes against my pro-customization point.
I wish these character creators had more options. I hear "this character creation is amazing" for so many games and none of them have stuff for dreadlocks or other afro type hairstyles. It's just so annoying to hear lol. Yeah great there's a skin tone slider, my choices are look like a bald black dude or super tan white guy lol.
Elma is the main character and the player is a supporting character. I will stand by that

Bryce Pappenbrook also voices Eren in the english dub of Attack on Titan. Grab some dual swords and go take down some giant monsters as Eren Yeager. Give your skell the right paint job and you can pretend it's the attack titan too.
One thing that I wish they would do with the character creator is unlock the hair styles. Currently, you pick a base preset and then build off of that. Each preset only gets a selection of 8 or so hairstyles, out of the ~20 for each gender. It's a little frustrating when you see a hairstyle you like but it's only avaiable on the Young Girl B preset or sometning lol
I hope they'll improve that character creator, when you see games like Elden Ring or Monster Hunter Wilds, it needs a bit.. more to it and why not also get new VAs from XC2 and 3.
I wonder if the boob slider will return. For context: This was removed from the international version, possibly because they didn't want us making "child-like" characters, given some of the fanservicy outfits you can wear. But this was dumb, because:
1: There are plenty of adult women with small breasts.

All joking aside, though, I love that the Character Creator straight up tells you the Voice Actors, and that the rest of the cast contains some big names in the anime industry.
"Main Character" vs "Primary Character"
Is that really a thing ? I mean do we really have to play the Main Character ?
I treated Elma and Lin as the Main Characters , while Tatsu , L , Doug , Gwin , Irina and Lao being the main story support Characters.
My character was just there for the ride , to see how their story / plot unfolds.
What im trying to say is , it never bothered me that the plot wasnt about me (the character that is played) , in fact i actually liked it how the plot was mainly centered around people that are not me. Its a refreshing take. I wished more games would actually do that.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem comes to mind. Aside from the prologue it's very much Marth's story but experienced from the perspective of your player avatar.
This is contrary to Awakening, Fates, Three Houses, and Engage where the player avatar is the main character and the rest are side characters
@@JacobNintendoNerd99 to me it felt like Chrom and Corrin were the main characters , but i admit i have never actually finished any Fire Emblem game. I still havent even started Three Houses on my Switch ... and Engage was just not my thing at all visually ... but i have to add that i actually get a headache from the color blue , its not too bad for the most part , but the high contrast between red and blue is actually tough for me to look at.

@mistressminerva3382 Corrin is the player avatar in Fates (or rather the name used outside the game itself as a default name). In Awakening, Chrom is the secondary character, and the player avatar (named Robin in Smash Bros, etc) is the main character.

Elma is THE main character. There is no question about this; the story mostly revolves around her.
The player-created Avatar, however, (Whose "canon" name is 'Cross') is the POV character; we see the world through his/her eyes, but have just shy of no story importance.
The player character by default is the POV character. (unless you're being needlessly clever with your storytelling.) This can be the main character, but as XCX (and debatably Torna ~ The Golden Country?) shows, you can be the POV character without being the main character.
