The 2024 EV6 GT Is A Serious Performance EV From... Kia?

  • The EV6 GT is a seriously impressive feat of engineering. Instead of designing a one trick pony, that just went fast to 60, Kia improved every aspect of performance from braking to battery and motor cooling, sports seats and track endurance. Even though they aren't calling it a track car (GT is afterall more of a road performance tagline), the EV6 has some serious cred.

    I'm retired and so is my partner and we live in the city near all the venues and professional services we need. I've owned a Black EV6 GT since July of 2023. It's been my "town-car". We use it mainly for errands and short trips of 30 miles away from our condo or less. Why did we go with the GT and not something less? Once I drove the GT against the other standard EV6 models I was hooked. I loved the features over the other EVs we had looked at but ruled out for various reasons. Was it overkill? Maybe, but when the kid who's revving his Hemi Charger next to you at the traffic light shows you the finger and shouts "slow poke granddad". There's no better feeling than pushing that lime green button on the steering wheel and holding on tight to the steering wheel. I do enjoy my EV6 GT.

      I recently purchased the Wind AWD just last month. I have been loving it and probably find myself driving more spirited than I ought to at times. As a very broad-shouldered individual, I couldn't even fit in the GT which they had on the showroom floor. The bolstering is quite substantial.

    Great job on the review. From an owner's standpoint, I've enjoyed my Runway Red GT for the last 3 months with just over 2k miles driven. I completely agree with the silliness regarding not having ventilated front seats, along with all the piano black plastic everywhere. From a usability standpoint, with sensible driving, I had been averaging 274 miles on a full charge, though highest was 289, though now that we've dipped into fall with our first snowfall and 20s outside, range has fallen to about 230. I'll be curious how it performs all winter, as I really enjoyed my Mach-E, though efficiency dropped to less than 2 mpkh. I've also noticed a much larger rear bias, so it'll be interesting when heavy snowfall starts.

    The main problem with the EV6 GT is the range, close to 200 miles
    Now, I've owned many sports cars, and in the real world, when driven with vigor, they get not much more than 200 miles. The difference is its easy to find a gas station when low on gas.

      Sounds like the problem is continually being worked on. I bet in 5-10 years we'll see a pretty different/improved infrastructure. For now, while it is a problem for many people, the people who are in the market for this type of vehicle likely wont have too much of a difficult time with it.

      I've had my EV6 GT for a few months now. Realistic range is closer to 220-240 miles if you drive it normally with some mixed GT mode usage. 2024 MY has a higher EPA rating than 2023, likely due to retesting and not actually any software or hardware changes.

      It’s a problem when you need range. It’s not for someone like me where I use my GV60 Performance as a daily commuter. And Tesla doesn’t offer performance kits or real performance upgrades becuase it is a tech company. They have no racing pedigree of the likes of BMW, Mercedes or even Hyundai themselves. The hyundai group has racing cars out there so they have real knowledge on how to make performance parts and chasis.

    Nice video. Thank you. As an Australian, who owned a model 3 performance and now owns a EV6 GT. For Australia, KIA has provided us with a suspension setup for specifically for our roads. The difference between the two are night and day. It handles and stops significantly better than any ICE vehicles that cost a lot more. The only significant downside is the range and available (or lack of) charging infrastructure. I do however have solar power with a 3 phase 11 kw home charger. Living in Melbourne, a city that takes about 2 to 3 hours of driving, to go from each sides, it’s fine with just home charging. To me the driving dynamics are much more important than straight line acceleration and yes, it doesn’t drop off in this area when the battery is below 70% as the Tesla does.

    I drove all the Tesla's and bought the EV6 a few months back. KIA is better in pretty much every single way that matters, and I LOVE my new car. I get 20% more range than the EPA, drive it like I stole it and the car never feels like it's throttling power or getting slower, unlike every single Tesla I have driven so far.

    Hi, Alex. I enjoyed your work here! I have put about 20k miles on my GT and would like to point a few things out. 1) it does have a front axle disconnect. It works just like the other models. 2) It does lose output with battery percentage drop. I have run 11.4X@120.x mph at 85%, and 12.0x@113.xmph at 35% SoC. This is still formidable, but it really begins to flag when you add in cooler weather to the low SoC. Then you can expect to see some truly lackluster performance vs warm weather and low SoC. At 19,XXXmi, my lifetime efficiency is 3.0mi/kwh, and Ive gone from under 10% to 90% in 24 minutes on a proper 350kw charger. The car is an absolute blast. In good weather, on my daily commute from a 100% charge, I put 210mi on mine and was still at 19% with 45mi predicted range (It began at 257mi predicted). Ive found this vehicle notably more efficient than the volvo c40 I had before it.
    You claim to have run 3.2 0-60 at 25%, and I know you are being precise, and trust your integrity, so Ill ask: Were outside temps 90f+? I am betting they were. Also, after that 60mph, if you ran a full quarter, I bet you saw notable mph loss especially on the big end.

    I started off looking at Ev's because the prices are coming down and a model Y performance was only 53K and $7,500 tax credit which I need. I considered the GV60, Mach E GT, & Kia EV6GT. No tax credit on the Kia but it's well worth it! I traded a BMW X3M Comp which I loved but I hit a curb, and it was all fixed but couldn't get rid of some small noises that bothered me but not most people. I ended up with the Kia because it is just as fast as the S58 and actually handles close to the BMW. I also had a Kia Stinger GT and have a Kona N so the controls and infotainment is all very familiar. I love the crackles and pops of my other cars, but I enjoy the silence of the EV's. I got the matt Silver and people like the Stinger when I first got it have no idea what it is all about. I can get 225 range easy and if I drive fast and heavy pedal it might drop to 190 range. I am waiting for the Inoniq N because I know it is going to be crazy. Especially with all the adjustments you can make, and it looks so much better the regular inoniq. Thanks Alex!

    12:28 how often do you change automatic climate control? Really!!
    I don’t think I change mind more than once every couple of months. If I want the car to be 70 degrees I generally ALWAYS want it to be that temperature.
    Does that change for you?
    Isn’t having all the time controls for climate a waste of space because you just don’t really need them often and never need them in a hurry?
    This is still better than being contained inside your infotainment. It’s one button then a twist of a knob. The alternative is … one button press fewer? That feels pretty good to me.

    • @seabream
      @seabream 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I usually change it about three times in a 30 minute drive minimum if I get in when I've been in a rush and I start out hot. If I'm in variable shading or sun direction, then more often. I change my sun visor position when I turn the car into the sun, I also change the temperature and air direction when I have the sun full on me. You do you, but if I'm gaining heat at a different rate, I want to equalize that by increasing the rate at which I shed it too.

    • @zero11010
      @zero11010 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@seabream modern climate control generally eliminates the need to do that. If the car temperature is very far off from there desired temperature it uses more energy to bring the car to temperature faster.
      That’s what you’re doing. But, it's taking you more button presses and effort to do it manually.
      20 years ago or longer … that’s the same as people slamming the car to max cold or max heat and then putting the fans on high. Then reducing it later.
      Tech has made it so this mentality just isn’t needed. It was common in cars from 10 years ago. It’s in virtually all cars now. The car is designed to bring the car to the desired temperature quickly.
      So … unless you want it at 68 degrees. And then 72 degrees a few minutes later … there just not much need to touch it.
      You run into this on especially cold days if you’re wearing more layers and the typical temperature is a little too warm for layers you didn’t take off. That’s pretty normal. But generally you change the temperature once in that instance.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Will you be posting any video's from the trip you were talking about where you had an EV6 and a Model Y? I would be curious to see the charging time between the two. I have an EV6 and our road trips all summer were amazing. All our stops we charged from about 30-80%. To me, there is a huge difference between a 15 minute stop and a 25 minute stop. So if the Tesla takes 25 minutes to charge, it really shows the benefit of 800v batteries. I think the 800v architecture isn't being touted enough and should be the standard of any new EV.

      Thank you so much for responding! It was curious to me about adding in the hand shake time and charger stall availability when comparing the EV6 to a Tesla. We genuinely had no issues during our two trips from PA to NC. So it didn't occur to me to think of the grand total time to charge. I definitely know this isn't typical of EV road tripping with a non-Tesla. But it's nice to know that once charger manufacturers make more robust chargers and once Tesla opens up, it will be a breeze. I am curious as well about the V3 chargers and 800 volt cars. My hope is that they are already able to handle it and they just need to make a simple change to output higher voltage? But there's no way it will be that easy hah!

    An 800 pound gorilla is “in the room” but is ignored by most folks. What about the actual LIFE CYCLE carbon footprint of electric vehicles? The “efficiency” equation is not just “point source” from the vehicle, but must include the primary extraction of the constituent metals, including scarce STRATEGIC metals for the batteries, as well as replacement of the batteries at 10-12 years and the effect of replacement batteries, OR the scrapping of the vehicle because replacement of the batteries is cost prohibitive. (Yes, ICE vehicles also have a lifecycle carbon footprint- but overall it seems less and less toxic than BEVs.) And which countries control the lithium, nickel, cadmium and cobalt used in the batteries. AND are known reserves of those metals sufficient to EVER replace ICE vehicles? And what about the LABOR used to obtain the metals- which apparently includes child labor and slave labor and human illness and injury over time for the workers? And what about post-use recycling infrastructure, which currently is in its infancy for the batteries?
    Perhaps full BEVs were forced on the public by government bureaucrats who had little to no knowledge of their subjects, a la Pete Buttigieg?
    Hybrid powertrains seem to make more sense that full BEVs. And one industry which seemingly could make huge inroads into oil use reductions is the supply chain, including especially semi trucks which use a great deal of oil, and ships, and railroad engines.
    And on and on. The issues referenced above will NOT be eliminated in 5-10 years. They will be slightly ameliorated, but the “hard” wall of scare resources will not be much changed in those same years. Strategic hybridization- especially if large vehicles- is likely a more sustainable and reasonable and efficacious strategy.

    The existing Tesla SCs won’t (possibly ever) charge the egmp vehicles at high speed because they don’t and can’t support 800V. The power electronics were simply never designed for that. They would have to do major hardware changes to achieve that. I do hope that they eventually support the maximum power that the egmp vehicles support from a 400V charger, which is supposedly 100kW. Right now, egmp cars only charge at about 40kW on SCs, which seems to be an incompatibility issue with the Tesla software.
    I’m super interested in the Ioniq5 N when it comes out, but the very mediocre efficiency of my existing Ioniq5 Ltd AWD is already a disappointment given my 120mi daily commute. I’m concerned that the even worse efficiency of the Ioniq5 N will probably keep me from trading for one. If it launches with the Tesla connector (which it should) that might change my mind.
    Basically all of the Tesla Model 3/Y versions will be faster road-trippers than any of the Ioniq5 or EV6 versions except for maybe the RWD variants because the Teslas are so much more efficient. I speak from personal experience. The egmp cars charge much faster than basically any Tesla, but the Teslas require so much less energy to travel the same distance. Even a Model Y would go further on the first charge and then only need to charge to maybe 60% to travel the same distance the EV6 would need 80%+ to cover.

    Do people use their EVs for track days or races? I don't see the value proposition of the EV6 GT.

      When is any performance trim a value proposition? I suspect most owners of any performance model or trim never take their vehicles to track events.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Some do, absolutely. Racing probably less so than autocross type events. The value proposition is that it's fast and cheap (all things considered) and that's been a winning recipe for decades. -Travis

      People buy Hellcats and don't take them to the track either. 🤷🏼‍♂️ There are plenty of appropriate places where you can dip into the throttle and have a little fun on the street without putting anyone in danger

    I don't know much about EV but a 200 mile -ish range sounds bad. Yes, I understand recharge times are faster but I'd rather not stop sooner.

      And after 10y it will be like 150miles I bet taking account how much they lie on claims vs real world conditions. EVs longetivity is not there yet. Battery technology is not ready.

      Like most performance vehicles, efficiency is not the priority. Yes, this will go less distance than the other EV6 models but it's more than enough for most and for those that want affordable, efficient, and functional performance you'll be hard pressed to find anything that matches this. -Travis

    Kia Sorento, just after a year, transmission issue, loud noise when driving. At the dealership for a week then came back and again recalls. Then again to repair shop for another transmission issue. Stay away from this junk company.
