Props to Michael C Hall this season for doing show while having cancer. I hate how this season gets so much hate, this was one of my absolute favorite seasons.
I like Lumen. Had a darkness thrust inside her by the actions of evil men. Understandably wanted revenge. Got revenge. Got out. Because her darkness isn't her. She's strong enough to move on. Julia Stiles did a great job with this one.

There was a time when i couldnt stand her. When all she did was terrible teen movies where she has a permanent scowl on her face. then i saw her in Dexter and she was absolutely incredible, killed every scene she was in.
idk why everyone hates on season 5. seeing Dexter work with someone that's actually normal and yet fully and accepts and helps him was so good to watch. on top of that the antagonists for the season made my blood boil more than any of the previous ones. it was a great season
for real, everyone else had some troubling pasts that led them to whk they were, ruined childhood in their own way, and with Trinity - if people recall, he was reliving his trauma when he did those things, he didn't enjoy it... heck, there was this scene where he poured scortched boiling water on himself, like some sort of punishment... all of them had some background story to what they did... but these guys? they simply did what they did out of sheer spite, they took their time with their victims, they enjoyed it, filmed it... it was sheer eviln evilness... and to see Dexter help Luman get the revenge is soul healing, plus it's clear and he says that as well, in a way... that's his way to get redemption for Rita... this season put Dexter through a lot of tests

Julia is such a good actor. Around 11:09 when looking at the picture of one of the guys, her mouth gets tight, she shows her bottom teeth, and her nostrils flare. If you’ve ever seen the body language of someone genuinely angry, almost vengeance like anger, she portrays it perfectly just for a split second. It just instantly stuck out to me.

18:59 holy shit the whole sequence is SO GOOD. Her standing there. the SCREAMS going off all over the room. the guy running shitless for a gun or something. Dexter knocking him out so easily. *Cheff Kiss*
In my opinion one of the best seasons one of the best characters one of the best storylines And one of the best vulnerable dexter especially when she left him!
This duo was fantastic, both were going through their own trauma and they helped each other through it. Deb letting her go was probably one of the best moments because she also knew what Lumen went through
I know at the end Lumen said she didnt need to kill anymore but I like to think her dark passenger never left and she is putting those Dexter lessons to use
Same. I had this alternate ending in my mind, where Lumen goes on the cruise with her fiancee, and in the middle of the night, Dexter gets a frantic call that she killed him with a knife when she had a panic attack because everything he said just seemed too normal. And Dexter had to board the ship mid cruise to help her dump the body and disappear off the ship in the middle of the night .
Lumen was more on a vengeance path, while Dexter was obviously more...well, his killer instinct. His motivations were always based on his urges and needing that code to keep him in line. Lumen needed an outlet for her pain, but once her pain was satisfied, that was it. I mean, she probably is never gonna fully overcome it, but she could be live with it and not become like Dexter. She's truly one of the greats of this show.
I’m so upset they cut her out. She was such a good character and they did so well developing her relationship with Dexter. Like they could’ve just stuck with her the rest of the series and had a bunch of interesting storylines. I just rewatched Dexter for the 3rd time and I’m on season 6. But I gotta say the end of 4 and 5 are absolutely gut wrenching…
Omg, yes. I was furious when they had her leave. Like, she didn't have to kill with Dexter anymore, but I feel like she should have stayed and eventually help him out of his own darkness.
I loved this season honestly. It was so refreshing for Dexter to be with someone who he didn't constantly have to hide from. Rita was amazing but the constant frustrations trying to balance his two lives gave me a headache
I know this is crazy. This is my favorite season after season 1. I like Julia, her and Michael had amazing chemistry. Love the whole Bonnie and Clyde thing too.
Lumen should have lived up to the potential of her name and been Dexter's guiding light away from his dark passenger. Having gone to the dark side and back, she was in the perfect position to do just that.
Though there were several iterations during the series, she was also the best representation of Dexter's longing to be known, accepted, and even appreciated for his true self. Unfortunately it only lasted during her crisis.
I love the script in this. 16:38 is a powerful but simple line. “Just let go?” Had so much meaning for her character in that situation. Reminds me of a dream I had. My best friend had passed away in a car accident (in real life) and I had been struggling with the fact I had moved away and hadn’t kept in contact with her the last year, being so angry at myself for it. I had a dream about her where she felt so real. I was standing in front of a creek with pieces of a wrecked car all over. Then she appeared on the other side of the creek, grabbing a part of the car and motioning for me to help her pull it. She just smiled at me as we held onto a car door from either sides of the bank. She said “let it go.” in a comforting voice, and we let the wreckage float away down the creek.
Jordan had one of the best final scenes before a kill that any villain in the show has had imo I loved how there was an actual back and fourth Dex and Lumen tried to get into his head shaming him about his past but he seemingly brushed it off given he didn't have much problem with who he became and then tried to get into Lumen's head about what she'd turned into as a Result of his actions I always like it when villains don't show much fear when on the table and instead use their last moments actually having a Genuine conversation with Dex rather than just the typical pleading or fear stuff.
Dexter just wanted someone in his life who understood him, who accepted him for who he was without judgment. It's why he latched on to Lumen and Hannah after Rita's death. Hell, I'd wager he was more attached to Lumen based on his reaction to her leaving at the end of the season. Yeah, personally, I think they should have kept Lumen around. Even if she decided not to kill anymore, she could have simply been there for Dexter as support. She could have been his guiding light.
29:30 The video ends here but the conversation continued. I remember Dexter says, rather emotionally: "You got over your darkness, but I'll carry it for you."
This was the last season it had that same numb haunting tone. The way he acted the part was just a bit different, but distinctly different after his cancer and divorce.
Well, dammit. I’ve got other things I could be checking out and possibly even being productive with but after watching this video, it makes me wanna start re-watching the entire series. Great video.
I miss this series so much. I wish they would have gone a little further instead of ending it the way they did. It would have been nice to see if Harrison would continue Dexter's legacy or if he stopped completely, after killing his Dad.
I wanted Lila and Dexter to be a couple. Lila dies. I wanted Lumen and Dexter to be a couple. Lumen leaves. I wanted the Garden lady and Dexter to grow old together. Dexter "dies".
Season 5 had it's up's and downs, but was still way better than season 6. Dexter and Lumen's relationship was one of the best parts and how they ended it was glorious. So glad she resolved her darkness thanks to Dexter, but once it burned away, she realized his never will.
This season touched me so much.. I literally have unrealistic expectations of men because of Dexter avenging Lumen. My husband will understand my desire for revenge against my rapist.. and either help me, or stand back and stfu while I get it. 😂
Horrible assessment. Hannah was probably the most “realistic” character. Ur just used to bs fairytale characterizations. Hannah is a harsh reminder that bad people win in the end because they do what none of us with a conscious will. The story was awful tho, dexter would not have let her live after discovering she tried poisoning his sister. So yea, the story was meh but the character most definitely was not. What can i expect tho, this dude doesn’t like dogs lmaoo
I've never been a big Julia Styles fan but man, she totally nailed this character. I believe it's the best role that she's ever played tbh. I like how they made her totally unglamorous, which was more authentic I think and Styles did an excellent job of projecting-what we think-this kind of victim would experience. Styles should've gotten a tv award for this one imo.
I think lumen reminded Dexter of Rita which is why he always had a soft spot for her. While I don’t hate Hannah as much other fans do I do agree that lumen had more chemistry with Dexter but Dexter knew that Lumen had a soul and wasn’t a bad person and he didn’t want to corrupt her I believe.
Lumen was alright. This season's villain, though, was by far the most IRRITATING character I've ever had the misfortune to watch on a screen. But then, John Lithgow's Trinity killer is an IMPOSSIBLE act to follow. The quality really took a hit after the end of season 4. "Tick-Tick-Tick-, Mr. Chase. That's the sound of me turning off the TV."
Why does Dexter have this hold on me?..I've never had any thoughts like him. Maybe that's the answer...fantasy?..like porn? But damn its a good series...
I am not a huge fan of Julia Styles, but I respect her acting. I grew up always seeing her in movies as a kid, and I think she had a pretty successful career for sure; hope she is doing well these days.
Someone will disagree with what I am about to say but I don't particularly care; dexter kind of was the good guy( in the beginning) and the writers should have kept him that way concerning how he stuck to his father's code of going after bad people only; he could have ignored that and went after anyone he wanted at any time, he could have given in to the temptation of killing the security guard his brother had laid before him at the abandoned hospital or his sister at their childhood home but he chose to follow his father's rules despite his own issues with him because deep down he really didn't want to hurt innocent people and season after season was showing him striving to be a better person and was achieving that slowly especially with lumen in season 5 and brother sam in season 6, Hannah in season 7 Was the worst character ever thought of for her corruptive influence is what brought down Dexter's Integrity and ruined him from being the lovable and honorable character we all know from the books and earlier seasons, the show's 2 endings was I feel very disappointing because they wrote it and his character all wrong for he wouldn't have given in to his grief over the loss of his sister to where he would abandon his own son, sure he would be at his lowest for a minute but he would pull himself together and remember the promise he made to deb of how he would always be there for harrison no matter what and you can't sit there and convince me that a small town sheriff like his girlfriend angela would be able to bust a notorious killer like Dexter based on circumstantial evidence not to mention the tranquilizer formula is not the same; he never used kenimine on his targets he used M99, The writers should have continued adapting his story from the novels for they had tons of potential of doing and successfully pulling off a reverse breaking bad and the blacklist with the character, turning him into his very own sophisticated concierge of crime fighting with a vast network of resources at his disposal to help him hunt those that escape justice while keeping him 2 steps ahead of the people he works for in law enforcement who feels and views himself as the "the bad guy" that doesn't believe he can change but doesn't want to disappoint his father, his best friend angel, his wife, kids and sister by giving up trying with case after case and ultimate showdowns with the main antagonist of the season pushing him further and further down the path of being a honorable, righteous and semi-heroic individual with new blood being his swan song where he sacrifices himself to save his son, his son's girlfriend along with his own girlfriend from Kurt Caldwell, his son and the billionaire character they had in there that was serving as a red herring, have it where he had a connection to kurt and was involved somehow in covering up his secret of being the runaway killer and Dexter dying ending their threat once and for all thus earning his redemption which brings his story arc full circle with him ultimately breaking good, As for doakes the most annoying thing about him was his hypocritical attitude towards dexter when he tried to get him in trouble for just doing his job as a blood spatter specialist after he in an act of revenge shot dead a former death squad operative who was unarmed and tried to cover it up with lies which put his partner angel batista in a very uncomfortable situation of possibly turning him in to be arrested by IA until he was given a pass by the government, It should have been written and adapted according to the way it worked out in the books where they worked together to take down a cartel leader and doakes was severely maimed by the main antagonist dr danco to where he lost his legs and arms and tongue as a consequence for killing in cold blood that death squad operative who just so happened to be related to the villain, dexter tries to save him despite him knowing his secret but fails, he goes into a comma and dies later on in the 3rd season but Is revered as a hero cop and posthumously awarded a medal for risking his life to bring down dr danko who gets framed by Dexter as the Bay Harbor butcher, the same scenario can be applied but altered to the character Maria Laguerta, have the consequences of her actions in season 2 befall her in season 7 by having esme come back for revenge on laguerta for ruining her career by using her secret connections to the criminal underworld to frame her and make her look as if she's losing her mind like what laguerta did to her by sleeping with her boyfriend and have it where Debra is the one that tries to save her but fails with season 8 being the final season that deals with the fallout of that event and Dexter being the loving caring brother that he's been towards her trying to help her overcome the grief of laguerta's death all while dealing with the reign of terror from the brain surgeon, I say all of that to say that joe from the show YOU doesn't hold a candle to dexter and that dexter would have that despicable man for breakfast, lunch and dinner to feed the very jackels he came from! 🔥😁😉👍
She apologizes for losing her darkness and dexter says don't be sorry your darkness is gone I'll carry it with mine. So Sweet xoxo
godddddd, it tore my heart to pieces
I just wrote this in a comment. Now I see the line wasn't iconic to me alone.
He loved her.

It's one of the more intense seasons. Underrated for sure.

Hate? Why did it got hate? For me it was the best season by far!
I think it just had the bad luck of coming after the best season of Dexter. Season 5 is the last great season after this it was all down hill.
@@hatecopterNo season 7 is definitely better than season 5
This duo was the biggest breath of fresh air after Rita's death.
Really? I couldn’t stand her personally, I especially hated that they gave Dexter a new love interest right after Rita died
what you mean right after? this shit didnt happen for a good damn bit, the romance part @carlos3709
Agreed!
I was expecting to see lumen back for the latest Dexter remake. I was disappointed.
I agree. Rita was annoying.
I like Lumen. Had a darkness thrust inside her by the actions of evil men. Understandably wanted revenge. Got revenge. Got out. Because her darkness isn't her. She's strong enough to move on. Julia Stiles did a great job with this one.
She has always been one of my favorite actresses since '10 Things I Hate About You'. She tends to play a specific type of strong yet vulnerable woman.
This was the most troubling storyline for me. What happened to Lumen is every woman's nightmare, but her getting revenge was satisfying and then her transcending what Dexter was and walking away was great.
After Rita, she was the best of Dexter's love interests. Maybe even a tie, actually. Loved her.
what about leguerta?

His character was always a weirdo, but he was a harmless weirdo. Great writing and even better acting.
That was funny as hell 😭😭
And I love that dexter doesn't even disagree with it he's like "no the other guy."
idk why everyone hates on season 5. seeing Dexter work with someone that's actually normal and yet fully and accepts and helps him was so good to watch. on top of that the antagonists for the season made my blood boil more than any of the previous ones. it was a great season
its because Season 4 ended with piece of shit Trinity killer absolutely triumphing over Dexter.
for real, everyone else had some troubling pasts that led them to whk they were, ruined childhood in their own way, and with Trinity - if people recall, he was reliving his trauma when he did those things, he didn't enjoy it... heck, there was this scene where he poured scortched boiling water on himself, like some sort of punishment...
all of them had some background story to what they did...
but these guys? they simply did what they did out of sheer spite, they took their time with their victims, they enjoyed it, filmed it... it was sheer eviln
evilness...
and to see Dexter help Luman get the revenge is soul healing, plus it's clear and he says that as well, in a way... that's his way to get redemption for Rita...
this season put Dexter through a lot of tests
The first time I saw this - when she leaves...I felt that. His pain. The face twitches, the denial, the begging, leading up to his explosion, and then immediate acceptance of what was beyond his control. Accepting that he had successfully helped her attain vengeance and peace and that the cycle was only his to repeat. The fact that he had to fake emotions all his life and finally starts to feel them is excellent character development. His prior experience doesn't go away with the nuance, he merely gets confused by the fact that he can feel - after believing his whole life that he never could. This show was well done.
Personally I think Lumen should have ended up with Dexter instead of Hannah. I like their dynamic better.
Same, she was a better influence. They had better chemistry
Hannah ruined Dexter, compromised his code and caused pain
Honestly I think if Lumen came back some random killer would get her as payback against Dexter. She was better for Dexter but Dexter isn't better for her if you catch my drift.
Crazy talk.
That's just your internalized misogyny that makes you hate Hannah!

“No not that guy, the other one.”
Basically had that happen someone called me a creep just for walking with my friend who’s a girl 😐
xd i was laughing so loud at 1 am
they were trying some comedy it seems
It’s a shame they didn’t work, but at the same time, it’s good that lumen was able to overcome her urges and managed to heal from it.

The scene where Lumen talks about just passively dozing off for an hour instead of legitimately sleeping hits hardest.

Lumen is really only explored as a fury. We didn’t get to see more sides of her. I think she really only represented Dexter’s need to avenge Rita.

Dexter deadass snapped his neck with one hand☠️
I've never been a big Julia Styles fan but man, she totally nailed this character. I believe it's the best role that she's ever played tbh.
I like how they made her totally unglamorous, which was more authentic I think and Styles did an excellent job of projecting-what we think-this kind of victim would experience. Styles should've gotten a tv award for this one imo.
Kinda surprised dexter doesnt wear gloves when handling the bags.
Water degrades & destroys forensic evidence.
I mean iirc the seawater and sea life deal with anything on the outside of the bags that could lead to him
@@oldylad That takes days.
The last one good season of Dexter.
Isaak was up there with Brian and Trinity imo but the Hannah romance was so bad it made season 7 just ok.
A lot of folks disliked this season, but I feel like the noticeable quality-dip in the show started at Season 6, not 5.
Incredible acting by everybody on this show.
:( gosh, this is such a sad story man. Julia Stiles is a great actress but man I wish she got to play happier characters :(
The only thing I didn't like was that the scumbags died too quickly.
Stiles is such a -fantastic- powerful actress.
This why I love Dexter
There's Dexter feeling inside but can't go through with it
Sick Boy really was a Sick Boy. Who'd have guessed.
8:02 “HA!” That seemed a bit like payback… Poor lumen 😢
Julia was the STUFF in season!
I love this season. Such good story telling
Why does Dexter have this hold on me?..I've never had any thoughts like him. Maybe that's the answer...fantasy?..like porn? But damn its a good series...
shoutout to dexter paramount person!
Imagine people's necks snapped as easy as Dan the Dentist. People would be killing someone everytime they gave a person a headlock
Maybe he had lower bone density
18:55 Julia's got that "Save the Last Dance!" Face
I am not a huge fan of Julia Styles, but I respect her acting. I grew up always seeing her in movies as a kid, and I think she had a pretty successful career for sure; hope she is doing well these days.
Season 5 and 7 are the only good ones after the first 4 seasons of Dexter
New Blood was decent, until the rushed ending.
Pretty sure he couldn't let her go just like that. I mean, he's a killer who enjoys what he does and her, she was just revenge driven.
Absolutely underrated character
Tonight's the night.
Day 4 of asking for a Dexter vs Miguel compilation
Fr man they got no Miguel vids
Yes
10:39 😂😂😂 he looks like a freak .. poor Vince
Someone will disagree with what I am about to say but I don't particularly care; dexter kind of was the good guy( in the beginning) and the writers should have kept him that way concerning how he stuck to his father's code of going after bad people only; he could have ignored that and went after anyone he wanted at any time, he could have given in to the temptation of killing the security guard his brother had laid before him at the abandoned hospital or his sister at their childhood home but he chose to follow his father's rules despite his own issues with him because deep down he really didn't want to hurt innocent people and season after season was showing him striving to be a better person and was achieving that slowly especially with lumen in season 5 and brother sam in season 6, Hannah in season 7 Was the worst character ever thought of for her corruptive influence is what brought down Dexter's Integrity and ruined him from being the lovable and honorable character we all know from the books and earlier seasons,
the show's 2 endings was I feel very disappointing because they wrote it and his character all wrong for he wouldn't have given in to his grief over the loss of his sister to where he would abandon his own son, sure he would be at his lowest for a minute but he would pull himself together and remember the promise he made to deb of how he would always be there for harrison no matter what and you can't sit there and convince me that a small town sheriff like his girlfriend angela would be able to bust a notorious killer like Dexter based on circumstantial evidence not to mention the tranquilizer formula is not the same; he never used kenimine on his targets he used M99,
The writers should have continued adapting his story from the novels for they had tons of potential of doing and successfully pulling off a reverse breaking bad and the blacklist with the character, turning him into his very own sophisticated concierge of crime fighting with a vast network of resources at his disposal to help him hunt those that escape justice while keeping him 2 steps ahead of the people he works for in law enforcement who feels and views himself as the "the bad guy" that doesn't believe he can change but doesn't want to disappoint his father, his best friend angel, his wife, kids and sister by giving up trying with case after case and ultimate showdowns with the main antagonist of the season pushing him further and further down the path of being a honorable, righteous and semi-heroic individual with new blood being his swan song where he sacrifices himself to save his son, his son's girlfriend along with his own girlfriend from Kurt Caldwell, his son and the billionaire character they had in there that was serving as a red herring, have it where he had a connection to kurt and was involved somehow in covering up his secret of being the runaway killer and Dexter dying ending their threat once and for all thus earning his redemption which brings his story arc full circle with him ultimately breaking good,
As for doakes the most annoying thing about him was his hypocritical attitude towards dexter when he tried to get him in trouble for just doing his job as a blood spatter specialist after he in an act of revenge shot dead a former death squad operative who was unarmed and tried to cover it up with lies which put his partner angel batista in a very uncomfortable situation of possibly turning him in to be arrested by IA until he was given a pass by the government,
It should have been written and adapted according to the way it worked out in the books where they worked together to take down a cartel leader and doakes was severely maimed by the main antagonist dr danco to where he lost his legs and arms and tongue as a consequence for killing in cold blood that death squad operative who just so happened to be related to the villain, dexter tries to save him despite him knowing his secret but fails, he goes into a comma and dies later on in the 3rd season but Is revered as a hero cop and posthumously awarded a medal for risking his life to bring down dr danko who gets framed by Dexter as the Bay Harbor butcher,
the same scenario can be applied but altered to the character Maria Laguerta, have the consequences of her actions in season 2 befall her in season 7 by having esme come back for revenge on laguerta for ruining her career by using her secret connections to the criminal underworld to frame her and make her look as if she's losing her mind like what laguerta did to her by sleeping with her boyfriend and have it where Debra is the one that tries to save her but fails with season 8 being the final season that deals with the fallout of that event and Dexter being the loving caring brother that he's been towards her trying to help her overcome the grief of laguerta's death all while dealing with the reign of terror from the brain surgeon, I say all of that to say that joe from the show YOU doesn't hold a candle to dexter and that dexter would have that despicable man for breakfast, lunch and dinner to feed the very jackels he came from! 🔥😁😉👍
