    I'm experiencing one of those cases of convergent design. My brother and I have been brewing up a level 1-X adventure where players get marooned on a archipelago, controlled by a pirate lord Blue dragon, and have to escape over the course of the adventure.

    My daughter wanted to learn DnD, so I made a little training one shot, where she meets another adventurer who works for Aidron, and tied in to her backstory. Her backstory, that she thought up, included her having a letter in draconic warning of a powerful ritual being done somewhere… I told her perhaps the letter mentioned ‘sparkrender’.
    I just ran our second session, which included getting on the boat and some lore dump during the travel, and this sinking scenario.
    She’s hooked, and I cannot thank you enough.

    DMed my first session last night. Ran this with my players and they loved it!! I switched it up by telling them what travesty occurred and having them tell me how they reacted. Based off their response I determined what skill to roll for and it lead to a super engaging first session. Great stuff

      @@heyitsMattyP both pretty much. It was basically a little tutorial where they first met each other, got a few npcs to interact with, got a generic “rats in the basement“ quest to see how combat works, and then an escape from the sinking ship with introduction to saving throws and skill checks.

    Actually I just thought of something -- in the adventure proper, the Compass Rose has been sunk for over 40 years and is part of why there's so many zombies and shipwrecks accumulated there, as per the name of the island. If the Compass Rose is only sinking -now-, what do you do about the other stuff it would have impacted?

    • @gioc2490
      @gioc2490 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could still very well be an area with a lot of wrecks -- prone to storms and with a lot of jagged rocks and piled up debris. It's a perfect hunting spot for a harpy, but there's not much she can do about the sailors who sink before she can get them or die inside the ships, so there are still plenty of corpses around to be reanimated by the curse. I think in the adventure proper, the sunken bones of a gold dragon have something to do with all the wrecks. Maybe the draconic energy emanating from the remains causes the corpses to decompose more slowly?

    Before even watching this video I thought of the party arriving in a shipwreck. I thought it would make more sense that way and foreshadow the shipwreck questline. So I ran my first ever campaign, I told my party they were heading to Neverwinter, didn't say anything else. That was a mistake, on the ship they asked me questions about Neverwinter that I hadn't prepared at all... Thankfully I managed to recover composure when we were on the island. Now I know that I at least need to prepare anything that I mention even if slightly.

    I've gone down a rabbit hole with Aleitha being on Compass Rose going to Stormwreck Isle to meet up with her husband. Given the male human already on SI is Tarak trying to start a new life, I got to thinking. If Tarak is the husband (real name Brastos), why are they worshiping Orcus? So, I now have a backstory for Tarak having run a heist gone wrong in a vampire's manor (he thought it was just a rich guy). Tarak was bitten and kept at the manor. Over time Tarak became a vampire and made his way to SI by Orcus' command to raise Sharruth as a Dragon-lich. In my digging, I found references to red dragons worshipping Orcus. So Tarak is a vampire in Dragon's Rest, studying herbalism to convert the Myconids to undead creatures (the problems in Seagrow Caves are part of his research), using the harpies to lure in fresh meat, and practicing a medieval type of medicine on everyone (blood letting, etc.). I'm curious if I can get my group of new players to start following Tarak's quest line and unwittingly do his work... They may even like it.
    The Myconids have caught on to Tarak's plans, hence the octopus to keep in him out as they try to remedy the problem themselves. They may give hints to the players after the area is cleansed.
    And the cleric's dream after destroying the talisman is changed to give hints.
    Ultimately, Tarak/Brastos is happy for the group to rid the island of Sparkrender and then wants to get them off the island as quickly as possible. Or find a chance/reason to convert them to his cause.

    My suggestion, would be to give everyone that succeeds at the skill challenge, a roll on the item table. Make it so their actions helped to give them better starting equipment, but still randomized enough to hopefully not break that start to much. Even better I'd say, is allow everyone to roll on the item table, regardless of their successes, but you give different item tables for better success. Allowing for players to always still get an item roll, but depending on their success, will increase their chance for better gear.
    Something simple like some basic items such as torches, daggers, rope, or something similar being in the table for those that don't succeed at all. They're still getting some useful items, and maybe even put a health potion on the table so they can get lucky and get something really helpful. Then increase the items to things like, tool kits and crafting supplies, giving players a chance to grab some decent starting gear, also probably toss in a few weak items like torches and daggers, but maybe increase how many they get. Next we move into the more successes, and that's where you get into better weapons and armor, as well as maybe a few very weak and simple magic items. Things that are going to be helpful but, not go so far as to already ruin most of your game.
    Be sure to obviously make the items make sense on your lists. Simple items are pretty easy to justify in almost any situation, but finding a random Laser rifle, probably wouldn't... depending on your setting at least lol. You probably would want to allow everyone to end the encounter and start the next phase with some starting gear, but not all their starting gear. I've always kind of handled that as, you can pick X number of items from the starting gear list (often being only 1). More often then not players pick a weapon or focus, and that's understandable. However if you want to help the players out more, you can wait till they have rolled on the item table, tell them what they got, and then let them choose 1 item from their starting list. You can also be tough on the players by either giving them no starting gear at all, or having to roll for what starting items they get off another table.
    Tables are nice, but just remember to not rely to heavily on them all the time. They're nice to have, but they can get boring and underwhelming if they're used to often. They work great for situations like this, creating skill challenges for the player to deal with, without you having to come up with one on the fly. Even having ways to succeed with each skill checks is actually pretty awesome, though I'd probably suggest not doing that for your own campaign all that frequently. That's a lot of effort for not a lot of use. It's actually a lot better to allow the players decide how they want to complete the challenge, but not all players know exactly what it is they'd do with a random Survival check to keep themselves alive in a giant octopus attack.
    I love the idea of shipwreck starts, but I've never been in a good campaign with one. They're never usually bad, they just end before it goes anywhere. I wish I could play more D&D, but sometimes it's just hard to find the time.

    I really like to start a campaign with an event like this. You don't really need a session zero if you ask each player to tell you why they are traveling to X aboard a ship. Now they are all on board. Rather than start with skill checks though, I'd probably just describe the storm and how the ship was sunk, and end with the PCs hanging on to a bit of debris floating in the water as the sun rises, then something brushes against the leg of a PC. It's a small shark, roll initiative. (despite the trouble of fighting in water, it should be an easy fight) Next, have them wash up on a deserted beach, and have to worry about shelter, food, and water.

    • @danielhughes3758
      @danielhughes3758 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Part of a session 0 is dealing with IRL stuff like boundaries, what they want out of the campaign etc. As for in-game stuff I think you're right that you can have the backstory be a creative part of session 1 prologue. Just don't neglect making your players feel comfortable with the group and the game

    I love a shipwreck. I have two problems with using it here, but I'm sure they can be overcome.
    First, I like the players' first encounter to be something they can wreck house in. A chance to feel big and badass and happy they chose to play this game.
    Second, I would like to build some attachment to this ship before I sink it.

    Levels of success = more gear that they get to start with after the ship is wrecked.
    The highest level of success means that the player keeps all gear.
    The lowest level means they are in nothing but their commoner's clothes.
    Also, this shipwreck is a great way to let players "learn" what class they are playing. The back story the player comes with can be whatever, but you have the character sheet for the class.
    As they perform the checks throughout this event the players learn what class they are playing.

      Upping the shipwreck challenge or the whole module to level 8? For the shipwreck challenge, I'd reckon just add 4 to all the DCs.
      For scaling the module, that's a bigger task. Not only are you making harder encounters, but I think the dungeons need to be bigger.
