Just picked up a triple black low suspension GSA. Also 32 inch inseam at 6-0. I have a terrible back from my time in the military. I found my previous standard height GSA just too tall for everyday riding. The height made it feel heavier too. This low suspension feels like a brand new bike made for me. So much better and friendlier to ride, including two up. When you have a bad body, ease of use (comfort) is top priority. If it wasn’t, I would still be on a Harley. Ha. Best video explanation of seat heights that I’ve seen yet!

Fantastic detail on seat height on the GS options. No one at a dealership could offer this comprehensive explanation. Wish I had seen this before I bought my new GS. Not sure I would have done anything different, because I did try the standard v low suspension with various seats in various positions, but did not understand this depth. What I did not consider was the impact the seat height has on “moving” position. Thanks for all the research, detail and clarity.

You won't go wrong with either the Honda or BMW i'm sure... As it relates to the BMW R1250 it's an incredible riding machine. I like the feel of a dirt bike as that's what I grew up on and I like that I can travel down highways in comfort feels like a sport bike and on dirt roads in comfort. They make a lot of different motorcycles as everyone likes to ride differently. Enjoy the ride and have a Fantastic Day!

You can also reduce by another 10mm any seat on the GS by replacing the rubber bungs with Wonderlicht versions. They have been designed to knock off that extra 10mm, and as we all know an extra 10mm is a big deal.

Thanks for the info. Just sold my 2016 GS and now in the market for a factory lowered GSA as they are +- the same height but with added wind protection. Should fit perfectly for my 174cm.

Subscribed to say thanks for the detailed explanation of various heights. BMW wants to keep it clear as mud, very frustrating. I also am 5'10" with 32" inseam so am getting a low suspension GS with regular seat (many say that low seat is quite a bit less comfortable). Thanks for tip about turning bike on and will double check height on the 1250RT (think my dealer has one, they don't have a low suspension I can try).
First off you are making a great choice as it's the best height for me. The low suspension models come now with the low seat and ESA. I also have a regular seat and tried that as well but found the low seat in the highest position in the low suspension model GS was the best for me as you can be flat footed when stopped and have a great leg position when riding. It's also Super comfortable. For long Rides 600 Miles Plus I use a Wild Ass seat cushion and it's fantastic! Don't use that much so mostly keep it on the back seat in case I need it. Everyone is different but Im so glad I make the switch. Every day that Im on the bike I say the same! Some will always say differently but I'm very happy. Safe Travels and Have a Phenomenal Day!

I'm in the process of deciding to go with GS or GSA, I have 33 inseam, was leaning towards GSA low suspension but I see you like GS better. Any advice would be appreciated. For me I like the GS it is much easier for me to maneuver in tight spaces the big difference is the height of my GSA if I would have started with the Low Suspension GSA I most likely would not have switched. Just purchased a 2023 1250GSA low. I'm 6', but with short legs. I like the low bike. The springs have been shortened, as well as the center stand and side stand. One minor problem is the shorter side stand can interfere with the foot peg if you add a side stand foot enlarger.
For me, I do not need the higher clearance. I'm not planning on hopping logs on the trail. I'm not planning on taking this bike on the trail at all. Gravel roads is about the most aggressive off-roading I will do with this bike.

The GSA is my dream bike. Sadly at barely 5"5, a 29 inseam, it's much too big of a bike. Had a 2011 RT with the factory lowered suspension and seat, loved it, but it got too heavy to maneuvre. Now ride a 2016 R1200R, a little less wind protection, but also less weight and sportier in the twisties. Couldn't be happier. Your tutorial is excellent. Thank you for taking the time to put it together.

What an in-depth video on this topic! Outstanding job on this. Thank you for the information. I do have a question on the low suspension option. I’m not sure what BMW does to the back end, but I’m assuming they don’t alter the front at all? So in theory, is the back end lower than the front? Altered angles?
Both the front and rear shock springs are different in size - meaning both are either shorter or longer depending on if the motorcycle is standard or low suspension modle. Example - If you have an existing GS or GSA and want to raise or lower your motorcycles suspension you need to purchase new shock springs kits for both the front and rear so the angle stays the same. Hi there. Great video! I was trying to understand the difference in ride quality.
When I was at the dealer there wasn't much travel left on the front forks.
So I was concerned about ride quality. My favorite thing about these bikes is the softer ride than my sport bike.

Sir, MASSIVE THANK YOU, this is the best, most informative video on the subject. I'm exactly your height (5'10 or 177cm in my case to be exact and weighing at 85 kg or 187 lbs ) and I'm considering the regular GS (I don't do off-road, just touring). Since having experience with a naked bike (Suzuki GSX-S750) with seat height of 820cm which is perfect for me, I can flat foot the bike comfortably, I was worried that the GS will be too big for me. After watching your video I can see that the regular GS with low suspension and standard seat will give me the same 820cm I'm used to and this makes me overjoyed :) of course I will go for a test ride first, but you've given me hope that I'm not too small for the bike, yay! I sold my GSA and purchased a GS Low Suspension which came with the low seat and ESA I also have a standard seat and put that on to Try and realized that the low seat in the highest position was the winner I have traveled many thousands of miles on the new GS Low Suspension and absolutely LOVE It no regrets only thank god I made the change. The stability when I'm stopped or making u turns or in parking lots or on dirt its the winner and the ground clearance works great for me as well. super happy with the wind screen and everything else. Have you experienced much difference between the two seats in terms of... cushion sir? My thoughts are also that when buying such an expensive bike (at least for me, I'm still saving for it) the ease at low speeds is a must. Usability and comfort takes priority in my eyes vs sheer height for the sake of height alone. If someone laughs at me for having a shorter bike than theirs, so be it - it's my safety that matters after all :)
@@DukeJohnny In the video I will definitely show the difference with the seat height in both low and high setting, etc. I don't notice a cushion difference at all in the seats. Your last part of your comment is the exact same way I feel... I can't tell the difference when looking at the bikes it's really hard to, and riding feels the exact same way plus you can ride it over just about anything...and If I ever encounter and obstacle that is too big to go over, I'm sure it would be to big to go over withe the standard height as well. Low suspension is the way to go of me. If my inseam was 34 Inches or more the standard would work great. The two inches is a massive difference in stability for me.

However, how would you compare the shorter suspension travel as a result of the lower suspension version in terms of comfort (and what is it in numbers, perhaps the same difference as the difference in height)? I couldn't find this in the comments or the video itself...Do you actually sacrifice one of the best features of the GS-series, namely the cushy ride? How about permissible payload, I reckon it's not changed? Cheers!

Thanks for the Video and you did a good job explaining the seat height options. You did however say on two occasions, that the only way to decrease the bike height is by having a pillion or heavy luggage. This doesn't apply to this bike as it will automatically raise the bike height depending on the load, and subsequentely restore the height loss using the ESA. In fact I have done a little research into this myself as GSA owner and there is more to it than this. The ride height even increases when loaded, to compensate for the extra weight added! On my last long Alpine trip, I noticed this while riding. It does however actually loose some height again when stopped, unfortunately still again slightely higher than a light or unloaden GSA. I will be doing a Video on this topic in the late summer if you are interested. Ride safely and .......'Put on Your Lid'.

If I may ask: does the seat height (high seat vs. low seat) affect the comfort provided by the seat? Is one seat more comfortable than the other, especially for long distance travel?
To answer the question does the seat height affect the comfort... and what I have found is No. If you travel a very long distance let say 500+ miles a day for multiple days you butt can get sore... That being said If I do travel like this I use a seat cushion called wild ass that works great. You hardly put any air in it at all and move around during the ride and my butt does not get sore at all. I also stand up on my pegs often to straighten my legs. The seat affects the ability for your feet to touch the ground and the bend in your leg when seated and your view through the front. I now ride a GS Low Suspension with the Low Seat in the high position and it works great for me. Thanks for your comment and have an Awesome Day!

I don't know if you have seen them but you can get replacement underseat grommets with an offset hole which gives you another 10mm height reduction. I have some and they do help. 👍

The ball of both my feet touch, which is OK with the low centre of gravity of the bike.

I have a 36 inseam, and the seat height has never been a problem; where I get caught is the distance from the pegs to the seat, which overbends my knees and results in my feet going numb.

Based on the information provided at 09:59, I'm thinking that my 225 lbs. body weight might allow me to get away with the standard split seat on the factory lowered suspension GSA, despite my 31 inch inseam. I'm looking to purchase a 2024 R1250 GSA.

I heard there is also a narrow seat which would effectively help get your feet flatter on the ground. Do you know anything about that?

Yes the seat lowers and raises in both the front with the aluminum adjuster and the back you flip a black plastic device back or front depending on your riding preference. I notice no less riding comfort with a lowered suspension. I actually prefer the Low Suspension GS over anything. You will see in an upcoming video about the New R1250 GS Low Suspension model. Each seat except the rally seat can be adjusted 20 MM with the front and back adjustments under the seat which means you can have the seat in the High Position or Low Position which will either raise or lower the seat 20 MM. Also, the GS and GSA come in either standard or low suspension models as well which lowers the motorcycle 2 inches before any adjustment in the seat is made. You can also use the ESA to raise or lower the motorcycle. The BMW R1250 GS is an Awesome Motorcycle you will be super happy with it. @@rickylim9046 From my understanding the lowered springs are the same as if you get the lowered suspension motorcycle. So I don't think it can be lowered further. I will do a video in the next few weeks to show the Low Suspension GS with the Low Seat in the Low Position with the ESA in Low so everyone can see the height of the Motorcycle with me on it. Im 5 foot 10 Inches with a 32 inch inseam and I now ride the Low suspension GS with the Low Seat in the High Position as this works best for me. Everyone is different. Have a Great Day!

how can i check one of those bikes to know is a low suspension bike? i mean how can i notice that or where i need to check? or if there is some digit on the VIN that tell me this is a low suspension GS ? can you teach us please?
My thoughts is if you need to lower a GSA, save money and get the regular GS. By lowering it, you destroy the main point of the GSA, which is the longer travel, so you may as well get a GS
what about their sports suspension-it said it adds 20mm ground clearance. I wonder how it looks.

My 2019 gs on ‘road’ mode is too high for me, I’m 6’ tall. If I go ‘enduro’, the problem fixed. Alone and/or with a passenger(my 110# wife) enduro feels better and safer too. Does it make sense to you?

where did you find the info that the low rallye seat is only 10mm lower? i found the seat but it's saying 30mm lower. great video, but can you shed some light?
The rally seat can only be set in one position on the bike. I got this information from talking to others as well as searching for the information.

I am looking to order a lowered suspension 2024 GSA, and the dealer does not know much about seat height.
I tried a 2023 lowered GSA and the height was acceptable for my 29.5 inch in seam.
I was told, it was it was a (split) comfort seat.. Do you know if it the regular split seat? because 2024 GSA does not seem to have such a seat option.
On the 2024 BMW R 1300 GS it does not come with a lowered suspension. It has a feature that is an option called adaptive ride height when you are stopped or going slow, you have a low seed height and when you start going faster the seat automatically raises. It looks like a really awesome feature. You can search for it just by searching on BMW R 1300 GS adaptive, right height it looks like it lowers the seat 1.2 inches I hope this helps. I do not notice a difference. Maybe someone else can also answer this, but the lower version is great.
Hello, sat on the fence Here with regards ro low suspension, having it low, is the ride comfort sacrificed much between a normal or low ?? No Information I can find anywhere
Riding comfort is the exact same... Have rode the GSA standard and low and the GS low and can't tell the difference only when you stop and your feet are on the ground. I have a 32 inch inseam and only like the low. Also the 1300 is great as well. Have a phenomenal day!
Hi I ride the standard height GSA can I lower the chassis mechanically (on my older bike I would drop the forks and adjust the rear spring) putting the seat at the lowest height setting sets me to low in the cockpit
If you have a standard height BMW GS or GSA you can purchase new lower front and rear springs from Touratech, etc. These spring kits are available in a LOW version, that will lower your seat height by about 20mm (0.8 inches). This is the easiest and most cost effective way to lower the seat height of your R1200GS or GSA to get your feet planted more firmly on the ground. The lowering springs work by having the top 20mm of the travel sprung soft enough that the weight of the bike and rider instantly takes up the excess travel, effectively reducing the seat height by 0.8 inches. No modifications to the original shocks are necessary, but you may want to shorten your sidestand and/or centerstand. This was on the Touratech website link below.
You can also purchase new Shock Kits with the Factory Low Springs from BMW or TracTive Suspensions, Touratech, Etc.

Considering the factory lowered standard gs, while 5cm less ground clearance, so you hit the tarmac easy compared to a normal height gs?

Hi, so what is the actual height on the low chassis/ suspension model when you install a low seat please? Also, can a standard seat has two position like e.g. Africa Twin has? Can it be set at a normal or lower position? Many thanks.

When you use the full bench seat, can you lower the seat both front and back like you can do on the one piece Solo seat? You didn't show that the one piece seat can also be lowered in the back and was wondering if you can lower the Rallye Seat the same? Thank You!!
This is a very great question and one that need to be addressed. What I have been told to the best of my information On the Standard height GS Adventure with the high rally seat the seat is 900 MM or 35.43 Inches with the low rally the seat hight is 880 MM or 34.65 Inches... On the Low suspension GS Adventure with the high rally seat the seat height is 850 MM or 33.46 Inches with the Low Rally Seat the seat height is 830 MM or 32.67 Inches. On the Standard GS with the high rally seat the seat height is 900 MM or 34 Inches with the Low Rally seat the seat height is 840 MM or 33 Inches on the Low suspension GS with the High rally seat the seat height is 810 MM or 32 Inches with the low rally seat the seat height is 790 MM or 31.1 Inches. With all of this being said I don't know why you could not adjust it even farther with the front and rear adjustments... @@EpicTime2Go Thank You! I think the Rallye seat can be lowered in the front ONLY but not sure of the rear so as to lower the entire seat. If that is true, I would get the solo seat so I can adjust the front and rear independently.
Spoke with a BMW Motorcycle Dealership about this subject - They took a rally seat and tried to put it on in different ways to answer this question and found the only way that you can have a rally seat on the motorcycle is the high position in the front and the low position in the back. Does the low suspension models also mean you're loosing 2 inches of travel on your stocks? Seams like that would really effect the ride?
From the 2023 BMW R1250 GS Rider's Manual page 229 and 230 the Front wheel - Spring travel 7.5 in (190 mm) standard and with the factory lowered 6.2 in (158 mm)
Rear Wheel - spring travel 7.9 in (200 mm) on standard and with factory lowered 6.7 in (170 mm).
From riding both I do not feel a difference. I'm sure someone will say they feel and notice the difference but I don't feel it at all and have put thousands of miles on both standard and low suspension models.

Man, what you want to do is to measure the seat height with measuring devices so that the shorts rider can understand how it adjusted.
The DSA(dynamic suspension adjustment) is for the modern GS, adventure big bike alike so that’s not matter anymore because the suspension can be adjusted by the rider himself

Do you notice any suspension performance difference with the differences in travel?
I’m sure there is some difference but I personally do not feel the difference myself on the thousands of miles i have ridden both the GSA Standard and the GS Low suspension models the feeling is the same. If the question has to due about seat comfort its all about perspective, if you ride 500 plus miles a day on a Standard or Low suspension GS or GSA your butt can get sore if your not moving around getting different riding positions or having a seat cushion like a Wild Ass seat cushion which for me works amazing but I only need it if I’m highway traveling very very long distance. I don’t use it hardly at all. I have a 32 inch inseam and the low suspension GS works best for me and feels the best but everyone has their own opinions but the ride feels the same. Comfort all depends on your riding position of your seat relative to your inseam. As for me the ride feels the exact same on a low suspension vs the standard suspension setup. The difference is I feel much better on a low suspension when stoped on uneven ground, hills, etc. Have an Awesome Day!
