      Illusions Unlimited
      Well, firstly, don't forget that Derren is a magician, but I imagine that it works in the same way that any hypnosis trick works; by suggestion. Derren planted the idea that the crystal actually would have some effect and Freeman had said that he had an open mind about it. But I am 100% sure that the crystal itself did nothing, neither did the fact that he had something on the back of his hand. It's all about getting in his head and putting him into a state of hyperattention and heightening suggestability so that when he suggests that he will not be able to lift the cup, his mind is willing to accept it and comply. It's not fully understood exactly how hypnosis works. Maybe it was just a conjuring trick, but I think hypnosis is more likely. I'm no expert! Cheers.

    • @illusionsunlimited6029
      @illusionsunlimited6029 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nilguiri i know i am a magician as well and i know how the cup part was done....its a metallic glass and the table is magnetic when a switch it pushed, but cant figure out the pencil part other than like u said

  • @garystinten9339
    @garystinten9339 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    No.. This was done with two things in mind.
    Balance and pressure to hold the cup.
    Essentially shorts the bodies circuitry to allow the arm to move up as he's applying pressure to the cup and using certain muscles to reduce his lift. Also the power of suggestion to imply the crystal is interrupting his natural rhythm..
    Balance. As in balancing the crystal on the back of his hand.

    just try and pick up a cup by pinching it, and placing something atop of your hand. it will feel like lead.. with a heavy enough object, the effect will last a while. That's possibly explained cause your hands dont have muscles, just tendons. the muscles you use are remote, and therefor even a relatively light load will acidify them rather quickly, due to the high tension placed on them. no hipnotism required.

    The power of suggestion at work. Belief?
    Why not trust Derren Brown when he puts it in such a way?
    What allows this to happen? It's not the subject matter but rather finding a some thing to believe in for even a few short moments. Isn't that what Derren's mission has been all along? How deceptable we are, to want to believe?

    • @lekoman
      @lekoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "Why not trust Derren Brown when he puts it in such a way?"
      Because he's an *entertainer* and it's his job to be untrustworthy? It is amazing to me that no one trusts magicians cuz we all know it's just gimmicks and trickery, but suddenly if you doll it up in one really specific form of patter - mystic superstition - people suddenly think it's heresy to call it into question.
      It's all the same basic techniques every magician is using. You don't suddenly think Penn & Teller are *actually* possessed of the ability to catch bullets out of the air with their teeth, do you? You don't think Criss Angel can really levitate, right? David Blaine isn't actually doing any of the things he makes it look like he's doing. It's trickery. That's the whole conceit of magic. It's really impressive, requires a ton of practice and talent, but it's all just a trick. So why would you believe that the nonsense Derren Brown says when he talks about ELP or crystals or whatever are real? It's just magician's patter. He's not even actually trying to get you to believe him for real... it's just window dressing for the trick.

    Pay attention when they show a close up of the mug at 2:48, and ask yourself, why would a ceramic mug have a metal bottom?

    • @aaaa-xf3hx
      @aaaa-xf3hx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daryl Harkins It doesn't the bottom of the mug is just painted when the rest of it is white. You do realise even for regular TV a whole team of people watch it before it goes out if anything in the video gave revealed that it was a magic trick they wouldve cut that part out considering he made his whole career on not being a magician. If he was to fake it though it would make a lot more sense to get the professional actor to pretend rather than attaching extremely strong magnets to household objects

  • @lekoman
    @lekoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Guys. It's a trick. Derren Brown is an entertainer and a magician... not a miraculous spiritualist, or whatever. If a magician, in the course of performing a trick, starts creating fanciful stories about how the trick is supposed to work, you're not *actually* supposed to believe them or take them seriously. It's just window-dressing.

  • @leebumble

    I wouldn't dismiss the use of crystals as some type of quackery quite so quickly. There's a rather off the wall scientist who's name escapes me who made batteries from those massive WW2 gun casings and filled with different rocks including crystals. Sure you wouldn't be able to run your TV off them and the most they were able to do was light up an LED but it demonstrates that crystals hold some extremely unique properties despite what Derren would have you believe.

      Yes that's correct, uniformed lab grown diamonds to be exact, which can help in quantum computing and can store ridiculous amounts of information.
      Funny thing about lab grown diamonds is they hold more carats than any diamond ever dug up from the ground. Indeed the way to tell you have a grown diamond would be the fact it's too perfect!! Also notice how we never hear about grown diamonds? I wonder how much the diamond industry would lose if we just started making them ourselves on mass?! It would be in their interests to keep this kind of info quiet I'm sure (although there is a step by step on the internet)!
      Oh btw, the scientist I was talking about in my OP is called John Hutchinson. If you type in The Hutchison effect into TH-cam you'll see what I mean. He's one of those nutty professor types, half mad half genius :)

    • @lekoman
      @lekoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Cox It's a trick. It's only a trick. Derren Brown uses patter that reaches toward the mystical/pseudo-scientific, but that's just a style choice. You can dress the trick up however you want, but the way it works has nothing to do with any of it. In fact, no magician's patter is ever actually going to be close to how the trick really works... that's kind of the point.

    • @gingerbill128

      i've seen two friends hypnotized , one by derren , one by paul mcKenna . It took less than 2 seconds , i was amazed how quick it happened , nothing to do with being weak willed. Everyone can be hypnotised , some people just take longer and are no good for stage/street hypnotism.

    The food plate was metal and they turned on the magnetic table right at the time of the cell phone call. The coffee cup could also have had metal in it, and was "stuck" to the table as soon as a person in another room looking at a video monitor switched "ON" the magnetic table switch. That explains 2 of the tricks, but the pencil was a slightly different type of trick.

      Tried the one with the cup, waited the same amount of time he did before allowed to try, similar mug, real quartz etc. Did not work. I presume this works on your arm becoming tired and then the stone backs up some psychological aspect and thus makes you *feel* unable to lift the mug.

      Edd O I don't think anything I know how it is done.
      Put it this way, Derren is very good at it and is a legend in my eyes for exposing and showing the possibilities but it's all dark and deceptive.

      Not all is dark actually but still deceptive none the less. Trickery.

    How does Martin Freeman look better now than he did 11 years ago?

    Lol easy, he makes him talk while his hand is in that uncomfortable position. Every second passes indeed makes his hand weaker. Ends up with him struggling.

    Here my engineering mind goes like: “metal base in the cup and the plate, easy to cast prop cups and plates with a iron base in it.
    And have an door holding electro magnet, that is remotely controlled in the table top and a nice LiPo battery that power it and voila instant “heavy” plate”. This is how I as an Special Effects guy would do it.
    That’s a full proof method so you don’t have to rely on a suggestible person. But the latter is easy enough as well, says the stage hypnotist in me, if you selected a few celebs that passed suggestibility tests and you invite one for this demonstration then you are all set.
    You never really know what Derren and his team decides to use.
