Everything about Derren Brown is next level. Taking mentalism and NLP to a logical next step. Practical application of psychological concepts that, in reality, are mostly used for advertising, brilliant. Anything he has produced is so worth watching. And so worth looking into the mechanics of.
Absolutely nothing Derren Brown does involved NLP, which is frankly a pseudo-scientific grift he has specifically dismissed as nonsense in multiple books and interviews. And as a matter of fact, almost none of what he does involves any form of psychological manipulation at all; he's a magician, the vast majority of the things he does involve common magic and stage mentalism techniques, which again he's straight up written about and even released instructional videos regarding. Go and track down a copy of The Devil's Picturebook and you'll understand, he reveals the method to several routines that will begin to open your eyes to the real techniques he's actually using, not the fake ones he pretends to use. Derren Brown's greatest trick of all has been to convince millions of people that reading body language and psychological manipulation are real things, when the reality is that there are thousands and thousands of practicing mentalists who routinely do the exact same things he does (albeit with a much smaller budget and on a much smaller scale.) It's absolutely masterful, he's the greatest showman of our generation by far, and he almost singlehandedly revitalised the art of mentalism.
I think Derren hypnotised David in the makeup hut once he signed the document he told him to to forget what he chosen and to only remember he was chosen as the participant because of the beginning he seemed unsure of some stuff lol
Wow I love this! The first one was in such a beautiful location, I'd love to have seen around it a bit more, I reckon that would be a fascinating space to just relax in, so much to take in. The cat picture was really strange, the way they were so similar to each other was like there was a ghost of a picture being shared between them! The third one was the most fascinating though, that one is eating me alive.
Ok, so when David was first drawing what he imagine, my mind went straight to 'cat' too... idk if that's something that Derren suggested or what, but that cool/creepy or just coincidence.
12:00 I guessed cat too. I think most people when asked to think of something will think of a cat, which is the first thing we all learned how to spell as kids.
19:06 Did you see Derren pull the switcheroo with the envelope? He of course got his own copy of the paper beforehand, had a handwriting expert approximate David's writing and just wrote a few words from the paper mixed with the scribbles.
You’re right. When he was writing his words stacked on top of each other and Derren asked him to move down the page. On the sheet they’re reading from the flow of the script isn’t regular, but not stacked. Well spotted and thanks for saving my sanity lol
Nope, because it was "automatic writing", ie.scribbling while thinking of something else see 16:00 And Derren even admits he got the paper beforehand 21:24 "I have looked at the paper this morning".
I've seen this and many others from Derren years ago and I still don't know what to think about that time travel. Did David genuinly came up with those images from the past or did Derren put those images into David's mind throughout the day?
How he got him to imagine the time travel was by subtle suggestions prob from the makeup and when he "assaulted him" in that booth all the way to when he underwent the hypnosis. But when he gets him to predict the future its more a test for Derren himself since he is still not 100% convinced himself, that ppl actually gets hypnotized when he preforms it and its limitations. I believe Derren when he says that all this isnt scripted with the ppl and what they say. I also believe the unconscious mind picks up on things in what is now known as the collective subconscious, but i have no idea how one can do it if one can.
I don't see how Derren could plant the precise image of a cat in a random lady. At @10:26 you can see something in the corner that could be a camera above David. So then you would just have to inform actors that they need to draw a cat (and what it should look like). The part of the river bank might actually be closed to the public and all the people that we see might be actors.
@@CaPtNBoOBoO the thing in the corner is just an IR movement sensor from an alarm system, the trick is done by that big chunky marker pen. The pen has motion tracking tech (like in a phone) in it and can roughly replicate the motion of the pens movement during the drawing and transmit it to someone else. the woman is a stooge who was shown the drawing the pen tracked which would have been apparent it was a cat regardless of how rough its tracking turned out and she drew a similar image. Pens like these are used a lot in these kind of tricks and over time they have become less chunky so being much less obvious
It's one of the more common things people think about when told to picture something random. People most commonly think of houses and stick figure people, which is why Derren eliminated those, and another common one is sailboats. But that doesn't really matter at the end of the day since she could have drawn absolutely anything and the pictures would have matched, because the picture David shows is not the same one he actually drew.
When i try to see within, i feel blindfolded. When i dont ...try... to see within, im still in the dark. Sometimes in the land of nodd, half way between awake and asleep i see stuff, but like a dream, it dissapears from recollection like smoke in the wind.
19:09 is a nice way to change the envelopes covering the move with the newspaper. (with a professional slight of hand). Why would you touch the envelope Darren? Why don't you just let him hold it the whole time? He kept it for days... and gave it to Darren and got it back for no reason. David shouldn't touch it the whole time😉, right?
@@LivingLegendMe He also had David write a full sentence before actually doing the automatic writing. This is more of a "cold reading" trick that involves fitting the article to the writing, rather than switching envelopes.

David Tennant is coming back as Doctor Who (in the main show) and Russel T Davis is the showrunner for it this year. Do some research. You may be astonished to find out what I have just told you.
You can tell David wanted Derren to go crazy on him (mean, creepy, etc.). I get that it's dangerous to do that to a national treasure who has agreed to be on your show, but I'm not going to lie, I kind of hope one day Derren gets to do a proper practical joke on David, perhaps something of the same level of creepy as the practical joke David did for the Friday Night Project.

I'd love it if Derren did a new series where he unprogrammed my friends mind to realise that God isn't real, and all he needs is self belief. i.e show him a future where he is unemployed and God doesn't provide for him because he doesn't exist, then show him working for himself without God and being successful. Then when he wakes up he realises that the religion his parents bestowed upon him was just a form of controlling him. Your good you go to the good place, your bad you goto the bad place. Just ludicrous that anyone in this day and age can believe in an invisible man in the sky.
