    I like how he says "I've got no need for a leather jacket" with SUCH sincerity, to convince us (and himself) that he would never have written that.... but does not realize he has NO NEED FOR A BMX BIKE EITHER!

    It was the touching of his shoulder ,locking him in, the rapid hypnosis induction handshake, the wrist pressure and constant dialagoue mixed with the external visual cues , Derren's linguistics are unbelievable and not easy to master to the level of ease he just spews out subliminals off the tip of his tongue as if its daily conversation. . That's exactly what he wants you to think. I remember one show many years ago where he was "influencing" people to draw a certain thing. Of course they had free choice to draw whatever they wanted. Derren was chatting to one lady saying things like "let an image sail through your mind" and "don't go overboard, just draw whatever you want". No shock to know that the lady drew a yacht (which Derren "guessed"). As he has said many times, all is not as it seems ☺️

    another thing he does here in addition to suggesting things while talking is that he puts him in a suggestible state by interrupting the handshake quickly and instead of shaking his hand he puts it down on the table. The way this works is that unconsciously we know what we are doing when we shake someone's hand and by interrupting that unconscious action, it puts the person into a more unconscious state where they are more open to suggestion and more easily influenced by things they the don't consciously notice such as the bike themed room or the language derren uses to implant the idea of a bmx bike into his mind.

    As others have said, I think it was a simple envelope switch and forged handwriting, and the "psychological tactics" were just for show. That said, I think it is entirely possible that Derren's techniques shown here could actually make someone feel at least a temporary sense of positivity and excitement about a bike. First he gets Simon to remember that feeling when he really wants something, which makes him experience it in part, and then anchors it to a touch on the arm. Then he uses the same touch on the arm to emphasise his embedded suggestions about bikes. So the arm touch will create both a feeling of positivity and excitement, and subconsciously elicit the idea of a bike in him. It's not unlike what adverts do when they show you images and music that are designed to make you feel good and then show their product at the end so you attach the feeling to the product.

    • @nicksamuel8324
      @nicksamuel8324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's real, and it can be done within minutes, however if it is it only lasts up to about fifteen minutes to half an hour.
      As for the original comment, he's a grown man. He wouldn't have written BMX bike and also in a later interview he remembered having written leather jacket.

    • @CarlDidur
      @CarlDidur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@nicksamuel8324 Pegg wrote "RED BMX" a gift he wanted as a child, given the parameters of what the TV show producers asked of him, I am sure it made sense. His original note was lifted or copied when he wrote it and the production team bought the bike and figured out the decor and script for the bit. The forged "leather jacket" note was substituted or revealed in place of Peggs actual note using standard magical methods. Hence his actual feeling of desire for the bike and confused indifference to a jacket... Nothing was planted in anybody's brain.

The handshake is such a normal and second nature thing, that as soon as you mess with it the brain does a double take but has no time to process what happened because Derren's already launched into his speech. When you read the techniques, you find out that the actuAl trick is on the audience. Simon is awestruck because he DID write down that he wanted a BMX bike. How Derren got a hold of the note, replaced it with handwriting similar to Simon’s, and then staged a show for us to make it seem like he did all this influencing with the red, the words, all that showmanship, that is what Simon is gobsmacked about. You have to take Simon at his word that he is flabbergasted, but more about how Derren knew about his red bike, but also how he got the leather jacket note in his wallet. Probably with a bit of help from inside Simon’s circle,: wife, friend, girlfriend. As for the handwriting, Derren is sure to know excellent forgers. But what you learn about mentalists is that the big trick they pull is the showmanship, the better you are at that the better the audience experience. Just thinking that somehow Derren had the note lifted, got a duplicate forged but with the words leather jacket, buying a red bmx bike then setting up the room with all these hints, and taking a couple days to do that, certainly isn’t as cool as thinking he Influenced Simon to forget about what he wrote and replace his wish for a leather jacket for a BMX bike. That’s what make Derren a great performer.

      Derren's Plan:
      - Convince the audience-- and Simon Pegg-- that Pegg originally wrote "leather jacket", but through subliminal suggestions over an extended period of time, Pegg now believes he originally wrote "BMX bike".
      Actual Trick:

    Here's a theory... Simon wrote down BMX. Derren and his team then over the week located and pilfered the note Simon wrote (they probably provided the envelope to make it easy to switch, as it looks very specific), and replaced it with a forged one saying "Leather Jacket" (forging handwriting isn't hard). Then went through the whole song and dance of the hypnotism routine with all the "subliminal imagery" in the background. Then Simon opens the letter and sees "Leather Jacket" and is amazed as can't remember writing it, he remembers writing BMX. Hehe, you know it would be the easiest way to do it. :)

      PolyHero I'm amazed that no one else seems to be questioning the scenario given that Pegg repeatedly says that he wrote down 'BMX' to start with.
      Although kudos to Derren Brown for creating a scenario where a guy says he wrote down BMX and is then given one, and Derren says 'no you wrote down something different down' and everyone believes Derren instead of the first guy.
      Part of it stems from making an audience want to play the game. I worked out it was going to be a bike around the whole 'two tired' line. And I congratulated myself on being perceptive and clever. And that's what Brown wants. He wants his audience to have worked out his script and congratulate themselves on spotting the 'method', which keeps their mind off the real, somewhat more obvious conclusion, which is that Pegg is telling the truth, and the 'leather jacket' is a plant/switch/forgery.

    It would have been even more impressive to film Pegg while he's writing on the paper. But they couldn't, because he wrote "BMX bike". And he had to do it 2 days in advance so they had time to swap the paper, buy the bike and prepare all the surrounding rubbish.
    To think that Derren Brown can mess up your mind from "something I would like for my birthday" to "I've got no need for it" (5:35) is ridiculous. And why would you think that no one on Earth can do the same trick although Brown explains how he did it? Because it's not possible. It's simple as that. This is Uri Geller-level piss take.

    There is so many little things he does to convince people. Notice he often does tiny little nods. Barely noticable but they are there and they often open people up to suggestion because nodding is a very positive gesture. Its the universal gesture for yes in many countries and languages. And yes is often a relaxing term because it suggests good things while no is a refusal.
    Then you'll notice he always connects physically with people, often by touching their arm or their shoulder. Humans enjoy contact especially if its limited and subtle. Not too much to be intimate, but a friendly touch to indicate friendship and thus, trust. its a relaxing technique design to put his "target" at ease which opens them up further to suggestion. It also acts as a trigger, if he wants to recreate that feeling of trust, he performs the same touch to force their brain to recall that feeling.

Derren's distanced himself from the NLP thing lately because people were getting interested in replicating the kind of thing he does and were investing a lot of time and money into it but it doesn't actually work; at least, not to this level. It's a magic trick with a neat twist to it.

      +Kieran Kelly i'm gonna say no because... hypnotism is bullshit and simon pegg(actor) hurts his own credibility by making this seem authentic

      +HashbeanSC2 do you really think Derren would risk Simon leaking the story: "Derren got me to act for him, he told me to say "BMX"

    You are a genius , I'm a hypnotist project and this reinforces what I think inductions do not need all those movements and outdated standards.

      It's not fake, I don't think he's ever used plants. But it's also not what he claims in the shows. He does mostly traditional magic tricks. Here I imagine he switched the envelopes like a lot of magicians do. It's fun the way he presents his stuff implying how he does it but it's misdirection and for the audience. Similarly if you watch Something Wicked This Way Comes he does a similar 'explanation' at the end of his show but it's not true. It's just really well done magic tricks.

      @@woc5767 Obviously the explanation at the end of Something Wicked is just for show and it's just a magic trick, but in this case I think it's a fairly clearcut suggestion routine and does operate the way Derren says it does. Having that much control over the person, the room, the language. It's not implausible that hypnosis and suggestion techniques could achieve this result by any means.

    Mental-Magicians call this method "dual reality": Unfortunately he just somehow switched the paper inside the envelope, and had to fake the handwriting, thats basically it! ...but well performed, so it looks like true mentalism!

    The trick might be that they somehow found out he wrote BMX, and the envelope was somehow switched. Then the script was written for the BMX.

    Simon was hypnostised before or at 1:21' , then the suggestions were put on his mind cleverly after that. You must watch the video of Derren bought many things then pay with blank pappers. Then you'll know the process of how they were done. At the end of this video, Simon was still hypnostised until several minuites later when he got out of the door.

    I always wonder if the explanation for how he does the “trick” is actually just misdirection, & has absolutely nothing to do with how it’s really done. If all of the BMX wordplay is just a ruse.
