I am so glad Paul is continuing with Cynic. As you can see by the result, he was the mastermind. Not to slight Sean, but it is what it is. They will not sound the same without Sean, that is obvious. Sean's style fit the music perfectly. I am looking forward to see how Matt's style fits with what Paul envisions. IMHO, this is one of the strongest songs Cynic has recorded. Trademark Cynic sound. Gives me hope that there will be another great Cynic album. In a time where Spawn of Possession breaks up, and Warrel Dane passes away, I needed this.
You're bang on the money man - I recall Sean saying some shit like there was no cynic anymore seeing as he was leaving, don't quote me on that... but it was something along those lines. He was dead fuckin' wrong - this is amazing and it's utterly Cynic.
You are correct. I read where he stated that Cynic was dissolved and that it was no longer an entity. I can empathize that he was upset, and that since he was there since the beginning, he had some say in the decision making process. He seemed really bitter at the time, and made some comments that were less than flattering about Paul. Fast forward, whether it was a payout from Paul or some other arrangement, Paul is moving forward with Cynic. I am glad for that. Realistically, Paul was the mastermind, so Cynic can move forward creatively. Sucks to say this, but drummers are more replaceable than singers and guitarists, and song writers. It's not like Neil Peart was quitting the band. I think in the end, Sean made the best decision for the fans, and I have huge respect for that. Best of luck to Sean. He was a huge part of Cynic's success.
I was a teen when it came out and I listened to it and still to this day... it sounded like the future. First listen I honestly didn't even know what I was hearing; I had to focus. It was 94sh I think. I became an instant fan for which my name was derived. It was my backup as my original was deleted.😉😉
Schuldiner's style is clearly heard for a few seconds, example: 1:58 I mean: Chuck lives in his old friends music styles and it's nothing wrong, it's normal and great thing. Paul and Chuck are outstanding guitarists.
This is really fresh. I just heard of Cynic today color me impressed. gives me real hope for guitar based music hearing fresh tunes like this. nice job Paul.
I just learned about Cynic and searched for "Paul Masvidal" on TH-cam, only to get a suggestion "Paul Masvidal death". I freaked out for a second before realizing that he was *in* the *band* called Death 😌🙈
Like a ballet on the fret board. Just gorgeous. I saw Cynic with Cannibal Corpse way back in the 90's. I was barely 15 and had already experienced one of my proudest moments.
MrJuico1337 Yeah, I'm very fortunate to have had friends who were as into death metal as I was. I probably wouldn't have seen as many bands as I have had I not had a good click to go with. At that Cynic show I saw Jason Gobel walking around inside with a video camera. It seemed like he was just walking around recording stuff. I walked up to him and was literally at a loss for words. All I said was, "oh my God, it's you". It was really embarrassing. After the show I met the rest of the guys in the back, including Dana, who sang and played keyboards that night. That was crazy. My first death metal show was Death (Human tour with Masvidal and Reinert) with Pestilence (Supporting Testimony with freaking Tony Choy on bass) and Viogression. It was total chance that I got to go. I was at a death metal friends' house that night and I was still into Testament(Souls of Black) and Metallica (Justice) type stuff. He said he and his brother were going to a death metal show that night and asked if I wanted to go. That evening changed my life forever. A few months back I was looking to see if there might be a Chuck Schuldiner documentary of some sort and ended up finding the footage of my first death metal show. That was emotional, to say the least. Gotta love TH-cam! I saw them then too Fresno CA Cadillac club they had a crazy chick singing the death vocals tripped me the fuck out went out and bought the cassette next day
Does anyone know if future Cynic songs will be for one guitar or two? This song is mostly one guitar, with certain sections that have two. Wikipedia says that right now Paul is the only guitarist in the band, but that makes me wonder if live performances will just use playback for the second guitar.
Tried this all afternoon. I'm a reaaally bad guitarist, but I could manage to play it quite similar. Sounded like shit. So, I was back in raw BM at night.
I like it but the vocals seem like a side note in this song. It reminds me of the last album but a little more forced and not as smooth vocally as I like to hear from Paul. I still miss the focus sound or the death human sound (greatest metal album) but I'm glad to see new music from cynic even though I wish they would have had more albums in their early years but o well
the call and answer solo section is simply beautiful
@NPC #102117 no u
We need Malone's bass playthrough!
That would be great.
Hell yea!
Yeah, this is great, but there's not even close to enough Malone footage around.
YEES PLS
@SacredDuck k That's a shame. How could people shit on his playing? It's impeccable.
This song bleeds Classic from every note. Such a good song. Wish they release an album soon.
Almost bro
The guitarist of Death's HUMAN!
... and cynic but ok
@@Hyperlink1337 I love death but I wish Paul was more recognized from cynic than death.
I didn't even know he was in Death lol
@@Alexistential watch some old death interviews

Check out the Matt Lynch drum play through of this song. He knocks it out of the ballpark!
All thats,missing is the growls
chito cynic never needed them. Except the debut.
How come it that Masvidal is so much more exciting a guitar player than 99% of the modern day prodigies?
This man is pure class for everything.
That half circle is probably the first inlay I see that actually looks cool!
Check out Padalka Guitars
What a legend of a dude.
If Paul can convince Jason gobel to come back, the 2 of them made an absolute masterpiece with focus.

Besides jazz guitar player you are one of my biggest influences thank you for your music paul
Those riff exchanges at about 2:15 - Muguuhd!

It's a great song. And its sickening how easy Paul makes it look to play! I've tied my fingers in knots with some of those riffs! :)

It's Buckeye burl, I believe.
You couldn't possibly mistake that sound for anyone other than Paul Masvidal.
AaronQ1222 totaly agree. You know when masvidal is on guitar
Chuck Schuldiner lives!
B M Irrelevant comment. What do you mean by it? Chuck is one, Paul is another one.
Schuldiner's style is clearly heard for a few seconds, example: 1:58
I mean: Chuck lives in his old friends music styles and it's nothing wrong, it's normal and great thing. Paul and Chuck are outstanding guitarists.
The thing is, that part you are talking about most probably was taken by Chuck from Masvidal, not vise versa
That shoes is awesome, the jacket also, what a class
I fall in love with the Guitar Tone
This is really fresh. I just heard of Cynic today color me impressed. gives me real hope for guitar based music hearing fresh tunes like this.
nice job Paul.
Wow!! What a track! Malone playthrough pleeeeease
Awesome guitar, love the inlays.
I love the bridge on that guitar!
I wish I could also watch the Sean Malone's bass play-trough.
So cool
Master of alternate picking!
Huh, ive always associated Pauls playing as more of a legato player, obviously he got those double or triple picked staccato riffs down though.
pretty sure hes an economy picker
He uses economy picking, but definitely not exclusively like Frank Gambale for example, definitely more of an alt picker/legato player.
SpocksBart you got the pauls mistaken.. paul gilbert
Yeah his alternate picking through strings is amazing
