Tremendous player, and I agree Sean would really appreciate him. Cynic is and has been the most creative, ground breaking, band. R I P Sean Reinert.

I miss Reinert so much and is still my favorite drummer, but it’s nice hearing cynic evolve and Matt has done a great job taking the drummers role

Man, it must be hard coming into a band to replace one of the most respected drummers in modern music.
This is pretty different from Sean's style, but the guy's gotta do his own thing. Tremendous drumming in any case!

I have been holding drum sticks backward my whole life
It makes the sticks super front heavy. If I want a bit more weight on the front, I just grab them a little farther back.

It’s so the rim clicks jungle parts are louder, when you use the meaty part of the stick it makes the rim clicks much more pronounced. Definitely a drum and bass technique, or just a good technique in general to make rim clicks sound big and meaty
Very Matt Garsk'ish' style. Even the circle in the middle of the snare testifies on his precision. Reinert would be very proud of you men!

The pleasure of hearing every instrument. Everything in its place, in its correct measure. What a joy.
Although the style is different from Sean's (but just as amazing), the drum sound is sooo similar, in my opinion! Specially the toms, it reminds me so much of the intro to Integral Birth.
Can't wait to listen to the full album!

Cynic has always been about moving music forward. I think the best thing that could be done to honour Sean and Sean is continue to write with this ethos. Liking the new stuff, excited to hear the rest!
I gotta disagree. Paul should definitely keep making music but cynic was founded on the chemistry between him and the Seans.

This guy has some pretty big kick pedals to fill, but I'm digging his style. Loved the double-stroke snare roll in the middle of the track and the not-so-ghost notes with those backwards sticks on the snare as well.
More like Demon notes on the snare hahah
very excited for the new Cynic album and as far as I can see, Matt certainly plays some sort of tribute to Seans style on the later works past Traced In Air while also bringing his own personality to it. So far nothing I do not love here!

Same here. I'm not a drummer, but my guess is that it provides a stronger attack on the hits.
Take a look at Slaughter to Prevail's drummer, he does it as well and to the extreme
Bonham inspiration I bet. But yeah not often used, nice to see that and the reverse fill, making an appearence.

Playing the stack at the 2:30 part makes no sense to me, all other instruments have a kind of flowing sense to them, but the stack just adds friction, I dont get it. Not the first song I'm being annoyed by this... Overall really cool song and solid playing though!

Really hard to fill the roles but there’s still really good playing in what has been released. I just wish it didn’t sound like the songs were recorded through a cardboard box. (this performance vid excluded)
