    I get 25 days. It runs 24/7 , fridge, cooking, hot water. Only thing I’ve done is fully insulated the rear of the fridge ( no gaps ) installed a roof vent with computer fans running 24/7 so it draws all hot air out. Then turn down the fridge to position 3 with fridge fans running. I travel with the inverter running the fridge so it stays way cooler. I Never use 12v. It takes to long too cool it down. Works great. 🍻🌮

      Hey Jorji, wow 25 days that’s awesome. We’ve only ever run the fridge on the 3 position.
      Running the inverter while we travel is an idea, will have to try that.
      Thanks so much for watching and for your advice. 🤙

      What size fridge?

  • @arthurhartwell1978
    @arthurhartwell1978 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lads I would be looking for a slow leak in you gas pipes more likely outside the caravan as you would smell it if it’s inside
    We turn on our gas hot water just prior to having a shower stops unwanted heating
    We get a couple of months out of the gas

    • @LBWAdventures
      @LBWAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Arthur, I have been over every join I can find inside and out with soapy water and have found no leaks. It has been so consistent in it’s usage over the last 14 months I have no reason to suspect a leak.
      We are still trialling our hot water running off the inverter so we will see how that goes.
      Thanks heaps for watching and commenting 👍

    You might want to edit the map at 0:21. Woolshed cave is about halfway between Sheringa and Streaky Bay, not south as on your map.😆

    3 way fridge : only use 12v when in transit ,it's only designed to maintain fridge temperature not cool down
    Hot water: leave off , use gas,but only turn on when you need (once a day???) then do dishes ,shower etc and turn off If left on is using gas to keep water hot ALL day/night 🔥

    • @LBWAdventures
      @LBWAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ron, yes after trialing the fridge on 12v last year I come to the conclusion that it was really only meant for travel so that’s all I do now.
      The hot water I have only ever turned it on as required so it’s not turning on and off, but we will see how we go.

    Hello guys just thought we would message you to let you know we run an extension cord from the hot water heater to the PowerPoint in our bedside box to turn it in and off. Easier than having to lift the bed up everytime. Cheers

    We have a bit of the same issue. Tips we have found for saving gas as we have a large 3 way fridge also. Add an extra solar panel/s if you can. Once batteries reach about 90% (about 10-11am) I switch 3 way to 240v using the inverter (3000w) solar will then continue to charge batteries, at a bit of a reduced rate but still enough to top it off by mid afternoon. I then switch back to gas by the time the solar is not covering the fridge (battery still at 100%) also use induction, air fryer ect for cooking plus electricity for HWS aswell. BTW, seen you guys a week ago, you pulled over for us coming through with our grey truck and van around the bend as you were coming out of camp, we turned around and camped in the other section near the water and the hill out. Didnt get a chance to come back and say Hi. Anyway safe travels, may see you again if you're near by.

      Hey ya Alan, switching to 240v is an idea that never occurred to me for some reason 🤦‍♂️, I will be giving that a go. Also I’ve been trialling the HWS on power for awhile so we will see how that one pans out too.
      I do remember seeing your truck come in we thought you would be in camp when we got back and we’re going to come and say hi, but we weren’t sure where you’d gone 😂
      Hopefully see you out and about again.

    Hey guys, nice video. Thankyou for sharing and such an interesting topic. I have a Victron setup as well but i installed it in my ute so it charges when Im driving on day trips as well. I turn the hot water heater on in the mornings on gas and when its hot i turn it off and like you guys, it stays hot all day. I try to do most of my cooking either with an induction cooker or over a fire and very rarely with gas. in a caravan park, I always go un-powered but use the camp kitchen for cooking and washing up. Can be a pain in the butt, but does save gas and money. i get nearly 6 weeks out of a 9kg bottle. A good tip is to have a sun shade over your fridge vents too to make it more efficient. Hope this helps :)

      @LBWAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey ya mate, thanks so much for sharing all your tips. We will continue to juggle our habits and see how it pans out. I’m definitely going to try and use electricity more and hope that makes a difference.
      If I ordered a van from new I think I would have a induction cooker installed.
      Thanks heaps for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍

    Get a 12v fridge or a 240v inverter fridge, 9kg bottle lasts us 4 months on average

    We recently upgraded our power system. We only have a 2000w inverter and a 150 Lithium battery. We have found that through the day if it’s very sunny and the battery is full or nearly full that it can’t take in any more solar that we can run our 3 way fridge on 240 power with the inverter. It extended our gas usage by nearly a week, as we were like you and going through the gas. Just have to remember to switch it back over to gas when the sun goes down.

    • @LBWAdventures
      @LBWAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok this is a great idea and one we haven’t yet tried. We’ve only tried running it on 12v via the solar so we will give 240 a go and see if it saves us some gas🙌🙌🙌🙌 Thank you for the suggestion and for watching!

I watched your episode this time not because of you gassiness but that you were on the Eyre as that is where we are heading in 3 weeks. Maybe we will even cross paths as your van is so distinguishable now….love what you did to it by the way. Cheers Karen and Larry

      @@LBWAdventures I was in same boat, I am in NZ best decision I made getting rid of 3way, having a fridge that properly cools and freezes is a big deal, get a few bucks for the one you pull out and move on.
      I did everything I could to try and make the 3way work all I am afraid to say a total waste of time, the gas fridge used to be cheap when gas was cheap and really was only option, and it just is not designed to work on power, it does but very very inefficient I tried multiple heating power methods, I used to manufacture electric heated towel rails so I know a little about heating and heat transfer, did fan mods etc all totally frustrating failures. I have 200amp batteries and 600watts of solar you have a far better setup than me your system will piss bowl a compressor fridge

  • @Davi.b
    @Davi.b ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Leave your fridge on gas. But when you travel use 12 v. Don't run your water heater unless you want it. Remember . YOU ARE NOT AT HOME. simply put you are drawing Way to much power and gas. Jet boil for coffee. Loose the high wattage appliances. Toaster.

    • @LBWAdventures
      @LBWAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Davi, we have been living in our van for almost a year and a half so we are quite aware we are not at home.
      Thanks for the tip on the fridge, to date that’s how I have been using it.
      We only ever draw as much power as we can make and have gone over 170 days continuously off the power grid by managing what comes in with what goes out. So we don’t think we are drawing to much power. Our lithium battery bank has never been below 50%
      We use a coffee machine and airfryer daily. Sometimes a steamer at night for dinner. Haven’t got a toaster yet though 😉
      Thanks heaps for watching, and taking the time to comment. 👍

      @Lentil Bit Wiser well that was an eye opener for you.
      My mate has the same van and the same setup.
      I had to show him how to save gas .. now his gas bottles last 1x 9kg in summer lasts 25 to 28 days. By introducing the engles freezer 12v to store the frozen foods. Your gas for your fridge is NOT using about 8 grams per hour which is 5.4 kg of gas a month.
      That is the difference of an extra week worth of gas for your fridge per gas bottle. .

    Wonderful video guys, really made me laugh 😂 sorry about the gas usage but I have an older style Dometic 196L fridge and as you said it works perfectly on gas but using the hot water unit and the fridge I usually get 3 weeks but I am a solo traveller so 11 days for both of you seems right based on my usage, I am sure someone may be able to give you some good information to help you achieve lower usage, sorry can’t help with a better answer, thanks as always for sharing your travels, you are awesome 👏👍cheers Darrel

    Hey guys you are way too gassy, it depends on if you cook everything inside your van or outside. I don't travel full time. However, I have stayed for two weeks at at a time in Dunsbouruogh WA in winter and left my gas hot water system on 24/7 and used 1/3 of a bottle of gas. Conversely, when up North of WA, FREE camping , I use the gas for hot water, BBQ and fridge and use very little. Very economical here guys. Good videos and travels uou guys.
