Hey Watchers! Steven here - first off I wanted to say thank you so much for checking out Homemade! A lot of you may know me from Worth It, a show that gave me the privilege of eating some of the most delicious meals all around the world. When I was thinking about what I wanted to be my next project, I realized there were so many more stories around food that aren't covered in the media revolving around homemade food. So with this series, I wanted to take a deeper dive into the stories of those beloved recipes and the cultural themes that underlie them. Hope you enjoy and that this content can help push the conversation around culture a little bit forward.

I actually love that the conversation at "home" went so natural, switching languages n stuff. It just felt much more personal this way? If they forced themselves to do all of this in English it probably wouldn't flow as much. I gladly read the subs if that means the people on the video as comfortable as they can be, I mean it's about home after all. 🙏🏻

I just wish they put the translation of the Chinese in the closed captioning as well (because they do have the English typed out). I rely heavily on closed captioning for English because audio processing disorder sucks and because CC is at the bottom of the screen like the subs, the cc ends up covering the English translation. I tried my best to alter the CC appearance so I could read through it, but it's still hard.

I literally teared up when Steven said, "I feel like I'm capturing a piece of my identity by doing this," because sometimes making your homeland's food is the closet thing you can get living in that culture and being a child of immigrants, I feel like are so many things I've lost living in an environment that is whitewashed. Making your culture's food is ritual, it is family, it is love. Thanks for reminding me of that.
I 100% feel that as well. I’m from India but moved to America when i was 1 1/2 years old. I still do classical dance even though I don’t believe in the gods it teaches about. I also like to help out with making the indian snacks we eat. It makes me feel connected with my home country because as an immigrant it’s really hard to ground myself in my roots. I love being able to participate and be a part of my culture

Damn, I can already tell that this show is gonna resonate with everyone, and I hope Steven knows that too. I'm not even asian but everyone talking about nostalgia and their cultures and how they love that feeling of homemade food is gonna make me cry. It just reminds me of when my grandma showed me how to make tortillas and I could only make ones big enough for me.

I completely agree. I really want to talk to my grandparent from each side of my family and find out if they have any familial recipes to send my way, because I’ve never had that. I mean, my nan had some of her own traditions (like peanut butter cookies during the holidays) but I haven’t learned anything that runs through the family.

When they were talking to her in chinese, it made me almost cry. A lot of asian parents dont teach their kids the language so we assimulate faster, and its so good to hear it.
I live in an Asian country and my siblings and I didn't get to learn Mandarin properly either xD
A lot of asian parents don’t teach their kids the language? Where I live (in the US) every Asian kid can speak their parents language (except for the adopted kids of course although some of them speak as well due to tutors and schools etc)

mixing all the languages you know is the definition of being multilingual, I don't think you can be multilingual and speak only one language fluently without inserting a word from another language. If you can, I applaud you.

Chef Shirley seems so cool and nice and fun to learn from! But when she said "come on, Asian kids" at 5:51, I instantly had fear kick in because of all the trauma from Asian parents/aunties/uncles telling us to be A-sians and not B-sians 😂

Was just watching this earlier I cried a bit because it reminded me of my Dad and how a few weeks before he passed away last year he said we should make dumplings together (just like we saw when we watched Crazy Rich Asians when he was in the hospital). He would have loved your show

Honestly I teared up when you guys were making dumplings because all I could think about was how much I miss my grandma in the kitchen showing me how to make Persian kotlets as a kid. She passed away suddenly this year and it's been hard for our family. Thank you for the good memories you guys. ❤️

So far Watcher Network is just all a win for me, like all of these shows have been so fun and well-thought out and produced and extremely entertaining while also being high quality and I'm just so happy you guys have gotten to do this!! There has to be an episode on jewish homemade latkes versus jewish deli latkes. Come out to Minneapolis/St. Paul my bubbe can make a mean latke and I know of the only delicatessen that can even come close to home made quality
Kyle Katarn jewish deli latkes are never crunchy enough! Homemade ones are way better because they have such a good crunch
That would be interesting, especially as the years have gone by. No one told me were Jewish until my teens. They left Germany in around the 1870s, and slowly as they became more and more American, they also ended up becoming Catholic. I don’t think we have anyone practice Judaism anymore.
Granted I’m atheist, but I’m still a bit upset on some cultural aspects I never got to learn about, not even the foods. Jewish foods were NEVER cooked - just more generically German.

Food is something that hits a special place in my heart and reminds me so much of my family cooking together and teaching and learning from each other. When she started crying, I knew where she was coming from. Dumplings are such a tradition; I always think about my grandma and a lot of childhood memories. I loved this episode.
I hope that this show continues after Covid. Watching this one and the other episode was wonderful.

As a South Asian (Pakistani) I'm so happy that Steven and his guest can speak Chinese! Us Asians don't pass on our language in so many cases, really inspires me to keep teaching my wife Urdu, and I'll definitely be talking to my kids in Urdu.

Oh man, the nostalgia and homesickness hit hard, and I'm here for it! I immediately got flashbacks to making dumplings and eggrolls with my family, and the warmth that came with it. I can't wait for future episodes and for others to remember that same feeling of home.
It's funny because as I was watching I realized the process is nearly identical to the pork and beef tortellinis my family would make when I was younger. It made me want to get out my pasta roller!
That's what life's about. Being Native American I can say to you don't lose your language, food, and ways. When you feel the spirit of food like you guys did it makes me happy to see you almost cry. Family is there go out and get it. Love you guys.

Me and my friends flip between korean and english so fast and often sometimes we forget that there are people that cant do that and have to concentrate to make sure we’re not rude and speaking in only korean
When I was younger my parents had a rule that we could only speak Spanish at home. Now that my siblings and I are older it's second nature and almost a language on its own when we switch between English and Spanish. It also feels like meeting other who can also do this brings us together as well.
All the talk about making dumplings together as a family and every culture having their own version of dumplings really resonated with me and made me super emotional. I’m turkish and we have a dish called “mantı” which is basically very tiny dumplings with ground beef inside. My moms family is from the mantı capital of turkey and every year me and my mom go there to visit my aunts. While we stay there we always get together and all the girls (my aunts and their daughters + my moms aunt who is 74) fold mantı. It’s a great time to joke around and gossip and catch up and I love it. Watching this really made me miss that

As an American from the South for me it’s biscuits and gravy...both together and separate.
I think it has to do with the strange and late evolution of American food culture that we don't really have dumplings, or much in the way of original recipes either.
I imagine if native Americans had the types of crops they had in Eurasia, we'd have some hella cool native dumplings.

I finally got the chance to watch after a horrible week, and I am sold. This show made my heart just melt. I'm not of the Asian culture but this still brought back memories of the feelings I got when I baked cheesecakes with my Grandma.

The end actually made me tear up
This episode just gives me the same feeling that I get when cooking with my grandma while making some basic Lebanese foods, that we all learned from my grandpa that was from Lebanon and all that. Got me really emotional so I can say that this will for sure be my #1 comfort show. Thank you for making this possible for us to watch!!!!

Steven, I gotta admit, I wasn’t sure about Homemade when I first heard of it because it was so different from everything else on watcher (that I know of) but i was very pleasantly surprised. It was a very good show and i am proud of u and Shane and Ryan for doing this regardless of what people think of it :)))))
Some people seem to have issues with in-show promotions... I love it. It's companies cutting out the middle man (the platform, the ad generators diagnosing viewer interest, the repeatative ads themselves) and just giving you money. It's awesome.
Teaching my now-husband how to make my family's dumpling recipes is how he wanted to spend our first year anniversary together back when we were dating. He had never had *any* kind of dumpling before, let alone tried to cook them! ...but he wanted to try, and it was so much fun. Each year, we celebrate by cooking dumplings together... it reminds me of my family, whom I haven't seen in years, and it reminds me of our togetherness as a couple. Basically, it reminds me of all the love my friends and family share. And no, I'm not crying, someone is cutting onions for a stir-fry...

this video means a lot to me. I am Vietnamese and Australian and haven't really been able to connect with family (due to language barriers) except through food. I never learned Vietnamese, and a lot of my family never learned English or learned broken English, so we sort of meet in the middle at New Year's (both lunar and western) and Christmas and other events where we can have a meal. the part of the video that got to me is when Steven, Melody and Wan Qing were making the dumplings and all speaking both english and Chinese, it felt like something that i've been missing my whole life. thank you all at watcher for making this series
