What a great video brought back a ton of memories. Thank you so much. 44 was always one my favourites along with 28 - not the prettiest 40 following its accident at Chinley in the 70's and having the 2 different front ends - but she was a stormer and never let you down - R.I.P.
sorry to be off topic but does any of you know a way to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot my password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Morgan Colton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Great video gosh that take me back. The turbos, the whine of the generators, the heat, the smell of diesel......an awesome combination, sadly missing nowadays. Wished id saved the videos i made on the North Wales Coast in the early 80s. I can remember coming home and being black from 'Thrash'. So I did something id always wanted to do a few years back with the help of the CFPS and spent a day driving 40135 on East Lancs with Chris Guntrip. What an awesome day. If you get chance id recommend it to any fans of English Electric loco's!!
you can see the third or fourth traction motor over heat and give some smoke once in a while in first and secbd field divert! Quite a climb up tae Buxton !
Although plausible Fred I doubt it. It looks more like the driver was putting down sand. Traction motors don't smoke... They get hot and go bang if anything! Cheers
I remember sitting in the driver's seat at Crewe open day. Must have been 86. Remember it was a really hot day. 8 years old then. I'm sure it's the one that someone wrote ' Burton Albion ' on the nose.
Let's not forget that the last remaining 40s (apart from D200) were withdrawn in February 1985, although 012/060/118/135 were reinstated for the Crewe remodeling project
Worked it's last train on Sun 20 Jan 1985. It was dragging a Euston service out of Manchester Piccadilly when the overhead power was off. It was a regular turn on Sundays. I'm not sure if it worked to Crewe or Birmingham before being taken off. It was withdrawn overnight 20/21 Jan 85.
@AndreA-ke2id there were a couple of 40s on Manchester to Birmingham that last Sunday I recall, think both 1G06 and 1G60 the two most likely candidates produced. The very last class 40 scheduled service, not counting d200 popping up regularly for a while, was a Brum to York service that evening that I took as far as Burton. I recall it being hauled by aureol, someone wrote Burton Albion on the front rather bizarrely.i liked 44, I also had a soft spot for 104 which in the summer holidays 1984 hauled the daily Brum to Llandudno holiday special almost every day for a month.
The Fart Cart outside Stockport station was obviously held back to follow this charter train but yep loads of railfans on board. Looking at the Derbyshire countryside reminds me how dank an miserable it is up there in winter
Sure was Michael when we had a proper railway with real locos and had loads of fun chasing and travelling behind the very few that was left at the stage.
That's because they were overweight and underpowered , thrash em full bore and they would do 80. Put a load with them and they failed to keep good schedules . Controversial !! .Maybe but true none the less.
At about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, Buxton is the highest market town in England. Due to this relatively high elevation, Buxton tends to be cooler and much wetter than surrounding towns, with daytime temperature typically around 2 °C lower than Manchester.
A little taste of lovely old England!
Thank you for sharing. Brilliant footage that brings back so many memories, I'm now 59 and still miss those days.
You and me both!
And me. I just retired from driving trains but I wish I was driving them in the 70's and 80's. It's all rubbish now.
Eight years after this first appeared I still come back and watch occasionally because it's out-flippin-rageous.
Brilliant stuff.. great film! Thank You… don’t you just love Behind the Engine films - especially mainline!
My favourite 40. Had her on a railtour and merrymaker.
Thanks for sharing this

1984 ? Holy crap I would sell my soul to be back in 1984.
brings back great memories of the heydays of real locomotives

@Morgan Colton it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my account !
@Imran Paxton no problem xD
Bloody love Tats !!! Hearing that fan roar and those 16 cylinders pound, Awesome !!!!! Glad I worked of these beasts back in the 80's 👌
Dost know Rob Wigley ¿?

Unofficially named Burton Albion on the nose, saw this at Buxton, can't believe it's over 30 years ago.
Absolutely fantastic
I was on that tour, great to see!

I can see wisps of steam coming off the front bogie occasionally. Obviously the steam is leaking from the front pipes.
Simply wonderful.
I was on this tour, great memories!
Excellent footage 👍🏻
Many thanks!
One of my favourites
Great thrash from the old beast, had her many times. Must be a Haymarket man or a longsight man up front. The Scots loved their proper loco's.
I agree!!!
Haymarket man with a massive route card
Top class recording that
What a great loco. Withdrawn just four weeks later. Criminal.
It was Six Weeks later, actually !!

Rather a lot of people on that boggo at 1:20 taking pictures!
Very true. This train was held back.
brilliant and fantastic
Fantastic footage. What happened to those days? Took me right back....
BEST video on youtube
What a dark gloomy place Derbyshire is and I remember growing up there with the dismal climate
We called DMUs Fart Carts then! With Class 40s hauling some passenger trains I'm speechless!
Did it have different 1 and 2 end noses?
Best 40 thrash videoever (a massive thanks)? Cleared 44 for a thou, not my machine, but nevertheless, a nice loco
Glad you enjoyed it

Happy days great memories 😊
Beast!
Class 40 departs Thrash-port! 🚂👍
Great engines.
My lords
Spot the allotment at 11:36
Were right hot too thoses mk1 compos with steam.
I remember the name Burton Albion at Crewe Works. Was it involved in a collision some where in around Buxton area? I have been there since 1976!
Gordon Johnson
Crashed at Chinley but what date I cant remember
Makes me wonder why they didn't just store the whole class when it came to the 40 because there's still a massive need for them now
Not really.
Brilliant
a long time ago
Sure was Michael when we had a proper railway with real locos and had loads of fun chasing and travelling behind the very few that was left at the stage.
Shame you cut out the bit through hazel grove!
Battery went - the time I changed over, we'd gone through :-(
Can someone explain why one minute it seems to be on full power and the next minute it seems to be almost idling.
That's because they were overweight and underpowered , thrash em full bore and they would do 80. Put a load with them and they failed to keep good schedules . Controversial !! .Maybe but true none the less.
because it is wheelsliping on wet rail, the control system cuts the engine power wnen it detects wheelslip.
Wheelslip. A lot of power demand on a damp rail. Common to all English electric locos.
I heard the entire class of 142,s was built with the steel from one 40 bogie?
And I thought the 142s were made from the plastic of one drink bottle 😀
Nice
Spot the silver ford Capri
where?
Looks like its struggling to go any faster it looks like its only going 40 odd mile an hour why's that?
Ben Conway it's a steep gradient
The line climbs steeply from Hazel Grove to Dove Holes
The recent class 56 tour didnt go much faster!
