This Tip & Trick video gives all the techniques on how to install a KERDI-DRAIN when there is no access to the plumbing from below. The KERDI-DRAIN in this video is used as a secondary drain, in a drying area or a laundry mat, etc. The floor was prepared with a grinder so that the KERDI-DRAIN can sit at the appropriate height for installation. Check out the video for all of the Tips & Tricks for your installation!

Thank you guys 😊
What if you wanted to simply put the KERDI drain direct onto Hardie backer Board then seal the top before tiling ? Can you buy the Kerdi collars separately and can you waterproof on top of this material with e.g. ARDEX WPC waterproof system?
Hi Elfin4,
Thanks for the question! A traditional mortar bed or one of our prefabricated trays are still required to provide support to the drain.
@@schlutersystems1 hey kerdi i have a similar question, so your saying i need your kerdi prefab or a traditional mortar bed, in a case like mine where a prefab is not possible to use, you are telling me it is not acceptable to use plywood and kerdi membrane to fabricate a custom pan only because the drain is not supported? what constitutes a drain support? how is that shape i see in your prefab offering any integrity to the structure?
I been working with ditra and kerdi fabric for a year and I like it better than cement boards
Thank you for this video. I’ll be using your products for the first time. Really excited to see the results. 2 Questions... You installed this on cement and ground down to match the flange. I’m installs on a subfloor. Should I grind the wood or cut the whole bigger to meet that quarter inch difference? Secondly, do you recommend screwing the flange to the floor or just setting in thin set as you did? Using rust proof screws of course. Thanks again!
Hi there!
For question 1, If you have two layers of wood already, you can remove about 1/4" from the top to accommodate that flange step-down. If you have only one layer of wood, you will need to install a second layer of subfloor (see handbook: sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/hb0/h39/9078303457310/Shower%20System%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf), or if you have access to the floor from below, an extra layer of wood between the joists (fastened from the top, honoring the seams) can be installed under the drain area. Blocking between the joists is needed to support the extra layer of wood prior to removing that 1/4" section. The hole for the drainpipe will need to be fairly tight, so you won't make that any bigger. Be sure to check with local building authorities as well.
For question 2, we do not recommend screwing the flange to the floor. Thin-set is all that is needed to install the flange.
Hope this helps!
Thank you for your video- very informative. I would attach a 2nd section of video showing the application as used in the real world. It’s a little bit comical seeing all brand new parts and pieces, air conditioned room, clean clothes, handing each other tools, etc. I understand it is necessary to show how everything is designed to work, I am just saying- I have to watch with a little grin.
I'm looking at the KERDI-DRAIN ABS 2" / CLASSIC 4" STN STEEL kit, product code KD2/ABS/E for installation in a sauna with plywood substrate. I have a few questions: 1) Does that kit include the large KERDI collar demonstrated in this video? It is not shown online - it shows just the pipe seal and the mixing valve seal. 2) Should I use DITRA-XL with it to account for the extra floor movement due to thermal cycling in the sauna? 3) If I use DITRA-XL will I still need to cut a clearance under the drain flange?
Hi Glenn, thanks for reaching out! Can you please give our Product Support team a call to discuss your project in a little more detail, and from there they will be able to advise you with the best options for your project. 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (Canada). Thanks!
Kerdi drain and the drain pipe is a 3" drain pipe? Is that advisable? Normally for shower drain, if I am not wrong, it should be 2" or 1 1/2".
Hi there Suneet! Thanks for the comment. We make drains to fit various size pipes and randomly chose this size for this video. Please verify with your local building authorities to determine the size pipes and drains to use in your application.
@@schlutersystems1 ok. Thank you.
I already know the answer to this question but I’m hoping to avoid having to start over with my plumbing. When I glued the drain flange, pressing firmly down onto the shower pan spacers, as I released pressure the flange has a 1/4 inch space on one side and spring. Is there any workaround for this with extra hard foam or am I looking at tearing it out and starting over...?
So hard to say, Jamie. Perhaps we could put you in touch with your rep. Wanna give our Product Support team a call for next steps?

Is the p-trap installed backwards here? I thought the drain was supposed to drop into the side that is straighter rather than more sloped?
Hi there, in general, when there is a height difference, the straight part pf the trap would connect to the drain outlet pipe. In this case, it doesn't really matter because both sides are the same height. Good eye though!
Do you have any videos describing best practices or tips and tricks regarding zero barrier for new builds.
Hi Dan, thanks for the comment! Are you looking for a video on curbless showers? Have a look at this one: th-cam.com/video/5C1s3YNYnfc/w-d-xo.html
Hi Jillian. We're happy to help you with your curbless shower project. This is a conversation that is better held on the phone, though, so we can ask you a few more specific questions. Can you give our Support Team a call? 888-472-4588
Can regular Oatey purple primer and pvc cement be used to connect that grey pipe drain to my white home PVC line?

I bought the shower kit with the drain and the drain flange, however I am wondering why the kit doesn't come with the collar?
Hi John. If you bought a complete kit with a flange and grate, it should have come with all the collars you need: the Kerdi collar for the shower tray and the collar and ring for the grate. If one of these pieces is missing somehow, please contact our Product Support team for help. 800-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (Canada). Thanks!
One thing it could be... did you look in the tray box for the tray collar? The tray collar is not in the little bag with the corners and pipe seals, it's with the tray. Hope that helps!
@@schlutersystems1 thanks for getting back to me. I have have looked everywhere for it and I can't find it. the box itself was used after we emptied it by my daughter to draw/paint on the inside which makes me quite certain that we emptied the box completely. where can we buy a replacement collar I can't find it any store that carries just the collar?
Hey John, sorry to hear this! Please give our Product Support team a call at the number I sent through, they should be able to help you out.
Great video
😊
Hi guys, do I have to level kerdi drain after thinset
Hi Orlando! No, the leveling will be done prior with the drain pipe and floor prep. If the drain pipe and substrate are properly leveled and prepped, there will be no need to level the KERDI-DRAIN afterword.
Thank you
Been using your product for 10 years. I see orange everyday. To be honest. My dream is to work for schluter.
Thanks for your support, Brandon! You can always send your resume to careers@schluter.com to see if there are any job opportunities via our HR team. Take care!
6:36 excuse me sir, that is not a kerdi trowel.
Hi! Can I use kerdi board it I’m using hot mop on showers?
Hi there, thanks for the question! While not a hot mop system, the Kerdi-Board can be installed in conjunction with a traditional mortar bed by integrating Kerdi membrane over the mortar bed and onto your walls. You can watch how that could be done here: th-cam.com/video/SVaPHoYkU-U/w-d-xo.html
Hope that helps!
If the Ditra ia waterproof, why do you need the Kerdi colar? Why cant you just cover the drain with Ditra?
Because of the thickness of the drain flange. If you put Ditra on top of the flange then the floor would slope up at the drain. Putting the Ditra around the flange makes everything level, then the Kerdi water proofs.
thanks
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you ejcsds! That's a great question. As Forest Page mentioned, the DITRA butts up to the edge of the flange because it is approximately the same thickness. Although the DITRA is waterproof, the seam between the DITRA , the flange, and the trapezoid cut outs in the flange are not. Every seam and opening requires waterproofing. This is achieved by installing the KERDI membrane collar over the seam from the DITRA onto the flange itself. The KERDI is also thin and malleable allowing it to follow the slope of the flange down towards the drain.
did he say interfere with the steel cable in the cement by grinding out an quarter inch 🤷🤦🤦🤦🤦
THATS A 3” pipe right???!
Hi LveMlike! Yes, this demonstration is done with a 3" pipe. 😀
