    why is the long corners schluter put on prior to the wall? Will not the water go behind the tile seeping behind the bottom corner put on last. I have done this several times with this system and I still always put down in this order. Floor, corners and then the walls so there is no "natural drainage" down behind something. Or is there still a chance of capillary action ? I would like some feedback on this

      Hi Nick! When KERDI is installed with a 2" overlap, water will not be able to penetrate and cause any issues, regardless of the order in which the KERDI and KERDI-BAND are applied, whether "shingled" or not. Hope this helps!

  • @alllivesmatter627
    @alllivesmatter627 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Water can leak at the transition piece going from the wall to the floor. It would be better to install the transition piece before the wall so it is overlapped from the top. Like doing shingles you want to do all u can to keep water on top. You would not install flashing on top of a shingle because it can leak even if sealant was applied. So why would you take the chance here. Have experienced leaks caused by doing this in this application already. On this video during water test that the thunder is already wicking the water. This is what causes water leaks later after tile install. Best solution I have found is to use a water proofing method over all joints prior to tile installation

    I’ve installed everything and planning to do a water test tomorrow night but I just can’t understand one step and how it creates a waterproof barrier. When doing the shower pan I put in each of the corners. I’ve cut the Kerri band to put between but I don’t understand how it is waterproof without overlapping. Looks like there is a small gap between the corners and the band in your video. Is this correct? Aren’t those areas where water can travel? Do I need to overlap it or use the Kerdi caulk? There is thin set but that’s not waterproof.

    I saw in another KERDI video that he was screwing the KERDI board directly to the wall studs. This video shows covering wallboard with KIRDI membrane. What are the pros and cons to this? I would think if you are totally renovating a tub/or shower you would be down to the studs anyway.

      Hi there! There are pros to each option; it is a personal choice. If you are directly on the studs, the KERDI-BOARD will save you a lot of time. If you already have gypsum boards on your wall and they are in good shape, then we would suggest keeping them up and using the KERDI membrane over them. • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not to worry; drywall can be used because KERDI is a waterproofing membrane and will therefore not allow any water to penetrate and damage the drywall.
      We generally install drywall screws every 12" o.c., which is standard.

    • @AmosMosesJr
      @AmosMosesJr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Schluter-Systems North America as a plumber things can and will go wrong. I've seen it. This is not a perfect world and I am not necessarily asserting that the Kerdi will fail. Other issues from behind the wall can cause water damage too. I am just saying it is an unwise practice if trying to save money. Plus depending on tile selection there will be a lot of weight hanging from those screws. Ordinary drywall screws are not known for their shear strength.

    • @schlutersystems1

      Hi there! The main reason for this is if there are different contractors on a project and the plumber comes through first and installs the drain flange. • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there! Apologies for the delay...
      The options for sloping a tiled shower floor to the drain are a KERDI-SHOWER-TRAY or a Portland cement mortar bed. The sloped mortar bed would need to be installed prior to the KERDI membrane so it wall be waterproofed on top and the water would slope to the drain and not saturate the mortar bed. The KERDI on top of the mortar bed would also continue up the walls in accordance with our Shower Systems Installation Handbook to create a completely waterproofed and properly sloped installation from the shower head to the drain. Neither grout or thin-set would be appropriate materials for creating a slope for the shower floor.

      Hi there! Close, but not quite. 🙂 We are saying that all waterproofing connections with KERDI, KERDI-BAND, KERECK corners, and/or valve seals need a 2" overlap, however, the corners are longer than 2", so the KERDI-BAND can be brought back a little in that area so the strips don't overlap each other. Hi there, Either way is fine. It generally just depends on user preference. Some like to overlap the KERDI as the go, whereas others prefer to butt join the KERDI and then cover with the KERDI-BAND. One practical reason for using the KERDI-BAND in some instances is when a small mosaic is being installed over the seam. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the build-up at the seam would be slightly less. Hope this helps!

      Edit: oh did you mean cement backer and mesh tape? I like to give that the same treatment as mold resistant drywall. I know you've probably finished your project by now,but ive made just about every mistake you can is all.

Rather than replacing all of the tile work in the entire shower, can I demo and replace the pan, remove two feet of the old travertine and shingle the new Kerdi a few inches above and behind the old shower wall base? • @schlutersystems1

      Hi Pam, we don't have any specific information as to whether those products are safe for marine life. However, our Safety Data Sheets are all available on our website. You can find them on the product page under "Downloads". They may be helpful. Also, since all of our shower components will be encapsulated within the tile assembly, you may want to focus on the suitability of the tile and grout that you'll be using in your application, as they would be the exposed products. Hope this helps!

    Why use a butt-seam at 5:30 when you could just overlap the two full sheets of Kerdi-membrane like you did on the other wall? Are you just demonstrating the use of the band if for some reason it's impossible to just easily/simply overlap the full sheets upon one another and skip the whole need for the kerdi-band process?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, yes, we are just showing the two options in this video. Since the KERDI-BAND is thinner than KERDI, the butt-joint method might be preferred when installing smaller tiles, such as mosaics, because there will be a little less build-up. Hope that helps!

    Can I ask why you would use corner and seems on the outside and not the inside?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. Since KERDI membrane is installed over the solid backing down to the subfloor and the provided shower tray is waterproof, the seams of the outside perimeter and corner seams of the shower tray must be sealed to create a fully waterproof and vapor tight enclosure. By installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK inside corners over the pre-sloped shower tray, these components prevent moisture disseminating below the top of the tray; therefore, installing the KERDI-BAND and KERDI-KERECK corners underneath the tray is not necessary as moisture will not travel to the substrate. In 20 years never anchored a door set into a shower curb or tub edge, that is ripe for leaks. you lay down a double bead of silicone for pre-fab units. Custom panels depends on the install type but are usually similar. Those yelling about hot mop and vinyl liners on here are just afraid of the inevitable. Currently using this system to replace a hot mop/mortor bed custom job that apparently leaked for 20+ years...had to replace 90% of the subfloor in the bathroom and a couple floor joists. This system is so much easier and lighter, never had a leak in all the times I've used it.

    If installing 2 curbs (90 degrees); how do you waterproof the “top” of the inside corner? They dont make a patch for that. Turn a corner inside out and cut the part that would now lay on the top? Also need to add a small strip of kerdi band to top of that?

    I have installed my walls (Kerdi board) but haven’t taped yet. I now think I’d feel better if I trim the wall bottoms to accept the pan after thin set, cut the pan to fit stud to stud, remove the pan and tape the walls, install the pan, Kerdi fix where the walls meet the pan and curbs, tape the pan and curbs (my kit uses membrane on the pan and curbs). Would you talk me out of this? If yes,

    I installed my shower, but missed the part where you discuss “memory” in the corner pieces - I could not get them smooth due to the shipping fold - blocking them to flatten them out created a couple of other dimples (oops). I guess I just cut those flaws out and put a Kerdi-band patch over the flaws?

      @@surfingweb7176 I actually tried futzing about with it until I pulled it out - washed off and heated it with hot water, dried it off, tried again. Eventually blocked it (fail - mentioned above). Finally just cut a long piece of band and put a patch over the pieces flattened by slicing off lumps, taking care to 2” overlap. Result was nice but not so much mid-way. Yes the hair dryer (or heat gun) would have greatly improved. Now I know. Thx.

    • @schlutersystems1

      Hi Kevin. The KERDI-SEAL-MV features an overmolded rubber gasket designed to seal protrusions and protect moisture-sensitive solid backing panels at the mixing valve. The overmolded rubber gasket is not flexible to fit over larger mixing values. We don't recommend modifying the valve seals as they will not work as designed. @schlutersystems1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark! We recommend installing tile or stone over Schluter®- KERDI. However, there are occasions where a small area of Schluter®- KERDI may need to be painted. A small area is defined to be the area between the end of the tile installation and the next closest stud and/or to the ceiling. Schluter®-KERDI is not designed to have larger surfaces painted. For best results, please follow the procedure below: · Skim the area with plaster. · Let the plaster dry completely. · Paint the area with a latex primer. · Paint the area with a latex paint. Note: Painting small areas (as defined above) of KERDI does not invalidate the KERDI product warranty.

    Hi, I have a schluter shower TT pan that I want to install. Can I use modified thinset to affix it to the plywood substrate? And if so do I then use unmodified thinset for laying tiles and laying the kerdi band? Part of my questions directly relates to the point when you embed the drain. I was made to understand that everything above the pan must use unmodified thinset. If so, how do i deal with the excess modified thinset that pushes out when I'm embedding the drain? Does this adversely impact my installation? I would really appreciate if someone could get me in the right direction. Side note I'll be using either customs or a Mapie brand thinset.

    Why would tar paper not work the same?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Tar paper is not recommended to use in conjunction with the Schluter Shower System. Just like a traditional PVC or rubber liner installation, there may be alternatives to using the Schluter Shower System. Differing installation methods should not be combined with our system to create a hybrid system. Schluter Shower Systems are an integrated family of products and are designed and engineered specifically to work cohesively to create a sealed system. Hope this helps!

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, no, it's not necessary to tape the joints between drywall panels before installing KERDI. If you must tape the joints per fire code requirements, make sure to apply a latex primer over the taped joints before installing KERDI. Joint compound can be water soluble and should be protected from the moisture in the thin-set mortar used to install KERDI. Hope this helps!

      @surfingweb7176 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@schlutersystems1 - That's not what you folks said in 2002 when training took place at TCNA. Drywall is tapered at the seams. This area needs to be filled and taped because mortar shrinks as it dries causing mosaics or subway tile to belly inward. Primer is optional and latex modified thinset should be used on backerboards for a tenacious permanent bond.

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, If you are installing KERDI over tapered drywall edges and are installing smaller tiles, such as mosaics, and have a concern that you may end up with an uneven surface to tile over, you can always fill in the gap with thin-set and let it set up for a few hours before installing the KERDI over it. However, this is generally not necessary. The best way to install KERDI over tapered drywall edges is to bridge the gap with the flat side of the trowel or drywall knife and fill in the area and then immediately do the same thing again with the notched side of the trowel, being sure both edges of the trowel are supported by the higher points of the drywall so the trowel does not dip into the gap. When installing the KERDI, use the same technique when pressing the KERDI into the thin-set, so you end up with a perfectly flat finished surface to tile over.

    Just a question. If modified thinset is a food source for mold, doesn’t that mean every shower that has ever been installed without modified thinset has a mold problem? That is basically what Schluter is saying but I find that hard to believe especially because I have never once in 25 years went back to a home because there is a mold problem. Overall, their shower system is pretty darn good. There are just way too many steps, seams every where, and their fabric is too thick and doesn’t crimp. I had a rep install a kit in our showroom and I had to tile it. I had to shave the back of the tile to get the cuts around the curb installed. Multiple layers of fabric = thicker bumps to tile over period.
