  • We get asked every day how the ranger works and questions about it. We love getting feedback and questions but the easiest way to talk about it all is in a video. So this is for all of you that had questions or just wanted to know more about the truck.

    Sounds like it just needs a bigger turbo, I would definitely look into it. That or adjusting fuel delivery ratios. Had one of the swapped into an s10 blazer and with the turbo we had, we could pin it through 5th and it hold egts at a reasonable temp. Not to mention it would spin the 33's like nothing. If anything try to find a bigger exhaust side of the turbo. And always remember, not enough fuel can cause high egts as well.

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      She rolls coal pretty good, if anything we think it’s a little over fuelled. A bigger turbo would probably have the biggest impact.

      Shifted Interests - Chris Boot that's exactly where I'd start! I had the same problem, so I cut the exhaust housing side and intake side to take bigger wheel. Couldn't hardly reach 1250. Bit pricey so I would just look into getting one with little larger wheels and housings.

      That’s a K03 off a 1.8T Passat, the factory upgrade is a K03S, which has a larger compressor housing. A K04 might also help. I’m running an IHI rhf5 off a UK 2.5 diesel Ranger. There’s a forum on dieselbomber.com discussing all the different K03 specs and what everyone is running on their conversions.

    My understanding of cab clearance lights at least in the US, is that it designates a vehicle over 8 feet wide, and is illegal for vehicles under 8 feet wide. Not sure how manufacturers are getting away with having them on 4-wheel pickups recently though

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My understanding of the matter is that it is not illegal to have extra lights (clearance lights in this case). But they are required for different reasons such as: 8’ wide, long trailers, high vehicles, high trailers, etc.
      My guess is that manufacturers include them on pickups because of the tow ratings that go with them, they are expected to be used for their full tow rating without modification or adding lights. I have never heard of clearance lights being illegal wherever they are not absolutely required.
      On the Kubota ranger, they are decorative.

    Have you ever put your truck on the dyno? If so, what are your horsepower and torque numbers? You also didn't mention what gears you are running or what axle. Also, you should race another SOHC 4.0 ranger with a tune, intake, and exhaust just as a comparison. That would be cool.

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If we find someone local with a similar truck but 4l then a race would be a cool idea!
      As for dyno numbers. We haven’t put the truck on a dyno yet, but we are guessing it’s around 100 horse and 300 ft/lb torque
      For gears, we guess it’s stock 410. But we have never checked. Limited slip. Stock axle.

    • @ShiftedInterests

      with 0.79 5th gear ratio(M5R1) and 4.10 final drive you'll be running ~2200rpm on 31.6" tires. Some people got good results with 3.73 gears. It may lower your EGT if the torque is enough ....

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... you are good at math, want to calculate our smart car top speed? What numbers do you need to figure it out?

    • @wusslwussl
      @wusslwussl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming it reaches redline in top gear:
      - redline (let's just assume it maxes out there, alternatively and more honestly especially in top gear rpm@max power)
      - top gear ratio (let me know what transmission you have I may be able to take it from there)
      - final drive ratio (Stock smart should have 4.530:1)
      - tire info (to calculate outer diameter)

    • @wusslwussl
      @wusslwussl 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see. You guys hooked the FZ1 transmission output to the rear axle. I need the sprocket teeth count for transmission-output and axle input(aka. the big sprocket). FZ1 transmission ratios is dependent on year. Also, does top gear still make enough power to make top speed with the weight of the smart?

    Why not a 4bt?

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The previous owner did the swap, I’m sure he had his reasons (probably cost and ease of access) 4bt has better specs but it’s not always about the specs.

      Shifted Interests I mean, the only reason to ever do a swap is to get better specs.

    Id suggest lower final drive ratios. As the gas ratios are for,more powerful engines... And,the,motor wouldn't work as hard

      We were considering lowering the gearing in the beginning. But it goes highway speeds in last gear, around 2,000rpm. If we lowered it any more, it would be revving a little too high and wouldn’t go highway speeds anymore.

      Alot. By the sounds of it he did not build this truck he got shops to do it. Even building yourself a diesel swap is easily 5 grand for a small 4 cylinder diesel. He may know the shop or have got a good deal. But I wouldn't be surprised if he has over 15 grand in that swap.

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out our first videos on this truck, you might be surprised. It was a cheap old truck that was falling apart when we bought it. But the swap was already done by the previous owner. there wasn’t much that went into the swap on our end, this project was mostly body work and accessories.

    where as it is nice to see out of the box problem solving this makes no sense. it will never fully run right because the fuel system is intended for skid steers and refer units. both setups are meant to run at a set rpm all day. as to putting a weaker engine into a truck any efficiency gains made by going diesel are lost by the fact that the motor is underpowered for the vehicle even with the turbo mod. again nice to see something different.

    The real question is, does it have a spare tire?🙃

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not... the crossmember that ford designed to hold it was non existent when we first started the project. We just put a steel pipe in its place for strength. The lighter the truck is, the better though, so I doubt we would have a spare even if we could.

    It’s not your egts I promise. That turbo is off either a diesel or gas Jetta engine and it’s not big enough. And the radiator is way too small for that diesel. It’s not your Intercooler.

    • @ShiftedInterests
      @ShiftedInterests  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The radiator is made for a 4l vs 2.2 that’s in it. It doesn’t have any coolant temperature problems 😂
      We are guessing the turbo is the largest problem, that’s causing the high EGT’s. egts are a problem considering the previous owner melted the pistons on his first test drive because he wasn’t watching his gauge.
