The amount of grotesque, stupid, ignorant comments about “real Japanese” (made by mostly by what I’m assuming are not even Japanese) or have any knowledge about the makeup or the problematic history about purity and ethnicity in Japan and what defines identity is just plain depressing. Thanks BBC for reminding me that we are in fact reversing in intelligence… First this man was one of many judges. So unless he was the only Judge or strong armed or manipulated the rest his vote did not erase the other scores… Secondly, Japan is made up of several ethnicities. Is “real Japan” Okinawan/Ryukyuan? Is it Ainu? Or those hyphenated Japanese like Japanese-Koreans who lived in Japan for generations (who don’t even speak Korean?!?) like the Japanese Royal family who are predominantly ethnically Korean or even descendants of groups who like the Jews saved from China during world war 2?!? Or someone like her who has lived in Japan their entire life? What does it mean to be say “Real” anything? Real American when you are not a member of the indigenous first inhabitants? Its corrupt win because apparently the affair man she got with is one of the judge, not sure if thats true. But it also show how screwed up asian beauty standard, especially Japan's is. If the situation was reversed, say in America, an Asian woman(not half or Caucasian) was selected to represent US as Miss America, she’s born and raised in America, I doubt that she will even be chosen cause though America is a melting pot, there are some underlying issues…
That's kind of impossible, then you have to start defining what DNA markers define a person as Japanese, and it will quickly get out of hand, as the most Japanese descended from immigrants from the continent in the 6th century. So probably the best they can do is maybe require one to be born within the borders of Japan or have at least one parent who was Japanese citizen at the time of the birth... which will also have exceptions as there had been fully Japanese national football team player who was born in the US or would exclude kids of parents who retain Korean citizenship etc... So probably the citizenship requirement of the contestants is fine, but the pageant should at least tell the contestants to not sleep with the judges, maybe.
You would not keep this energy for any other place on the planet. Imagine if we say asians cant be Miss America, or only Indigenous Americans. Or that you needed to prove you were ethically Germany to be Miss Germany. Bizarre race realism shit happening

The US is an exception since it wasn't necessarily the land of common ancestors, it was just europeans that came there very recently and then many immigrants/minorities came there, making it a melting pot, which in US case would make sense. Even the US boast about it being a melting pot, which would be part of US identity. I find a lot of people tend to mix up nationality, ethnicity, culture, phenotype and religion together. All those things are part of one's identity, but they are all different things. Even if someone is born in japan, it doesn't make them japanese by ethnicity, unless one or both of their parents are japanese which would make them japanese or half japanese. If a black or white person goes to japan and get a japanese citizenship, they would be considered as nationally japanese by citizenship, not ethnically. Same case for if a white couple makes a baby and the baby is born in japan, it doesn't make the baby ethnically japanese, they are still white phenotypically. A title such as miss Japan is made to represent the people of japan.

I believe this contest in particular is about Japanese citizens rather than ethnic Japanese women. If it was, they would let members of the Japanese diaspora compete, but they didn’t. Frankly if they did that would have been alright, but in this case it isn’t really an issue. Also, she was raised almost all of her life in Japan. Id trust a Japanese person more about her identity as “Japanese” more than a random TH-cam comment.
Only giving it up after being exposed about something unrelated just shows how much she really cared about japanese peoples anger. She didnt. She doesn't deserve pity.
Is Japanese culture generally opposed to affairs? No. So why do they pretend to be judgmental only now, when it supports someone's racial-purity campaign? Nitpicking over her personal life is not something she owes them anything for, and she only shows how Japanese she is at heart, by taking it seriously and apologising when she is not wrong.

But she KNEW he was married and had a FAMILY. Instead of telling the wife, she chose to continue the relationship knowing it was wrong OR she knew from the beginning and just didn't care. She didn't cheat on anyone, that's true. BUT she has horrible morals clearly. She is still wrong for doing so. She needs to take several seats.
@@neko7606I would agree, except for the fact that to me it seems like she was picked for being white, not necessarily beautiful. She's very pretty, but if she represented any Western country she wouldn't be picked for Miss anything.
@@neko7606 I agree sleeping with the judges was part of it. And I also agree they have a different standard of beauty, but part of that standard is the weird focus on white features. Korea and Japan are known for skin-bleaching products and eyelid surgery which makes them look more white.
@@neko7606 You make a point with the skintone, which I will take back since after some more research it does lean more towards ancient culture than anything else. But the eyelid surgery is specifically correlated with the popularization of western beauty amongst Asian women. Many Japanese people have double eyelids but it wasn't something specifically sought after until the exposure to Western folks. It would be Eurocentric to assume the majority of Japanese women want to look white, but it would be naive to not see how Western movies, shows, culture, etc. have had their influence on Eastern beauty standards. In the same turn, there has been an influx of women and men trying to look more Korean due to Korean beauty and Kpop influence. I'm not trying to say everyone wants to look white, but you can still see some of the effects of putting white beauty on a pedestal.
@@neko7606 Then you can agree by that logic that there may be some appeal to (presumably) Japanese judges to pick someone who doesn't look like the other Japanese contestants, while still being able to naturally perform Japanese culture and characteristics?
Even as someone who thinks it’s completely fine to favour European beauty standards if that’s your preference, and who personally has that preference, I do think the representatives of each nation’s beauty should have features characteristic of that nation

What made me most disappointed was that Karolina ishii was clearly unfit to participate based on her ethics alone. This pageant is 'supposed to' be about women supporting women. Celebrating women. She does not understand that belief so she should have not participated in the first place. Secondly, she has been living in Japan since the age of 4. She should know what happens when the Japanese media reveals an affair. Therefore she should have ended the affair if she truly wanted to participate. The doctor (age 47) initially lied to her about being a divorced man when they first met but she later revealed that when they met again he was honest about having a wife and kid. However she decided to keep seeing him.* But you have to have some dignity to not be a mistress. Who knows how many more lies he was saying to keep her close. He's also 21 years older than her and four years older than her mom (age 43, teen mom). Her mom's name is Lana and she recently won Best Body Japan 2023 last Fall/Winter. The doctor and Karolina have also participated in the competition and won in categories. Therefore, they should already know how long it takes to prepare to compete. Some of these women prepared since childhood to become Miss Japan and compete in Miss World/Universe. Wasting the other pageant participant's time and resources only for the crown to be vacant this year is selfish. 😢 This could have all been avoided if she didn't participate. Clean your dirty laundry before you hang it out to dry in public. Add: Initially I tried to think maybe Karolina was a bit shocked by the marriage but turns out the doctor's wife even tried to stop them. Though they continued.

I don’t understand how a European born woman who doesn’t have Japanese blood, represent the beauty of a country from a different continent? I agree with the Japanese people here as they have their own unique charms like every other country, but “Miss Japan” has the charm of a EUROPEAN woman. No plastic surgery (or lip injections) can make her look Japanese or even Asian in general. It woukd be more acceptable if you were born in that country and your family has a long history in that country. For example an African-American woman in the US would still be valid to represent the USA’s beauty as her family has had a long history in that country and she was also born there.
I get what you mean. For Japan I feel they should be born there or be part Japanese if they are mixed. America is a multi-ethnic country filled with diversity which I’m very thankful for that. And also America shouldn’t be standardized as European. And most black people have 500 years of history in the USA and help built it so absolutely their beauty should be represented.

There are many better looking japanese women and this just feel biased. I think every country should have their phenotype represented. Mostly when it comes to a grant title such as miss JAPAN.

Yeah I don't get it either. Definitely not prettier then most Japanese girls. Those judges were just tired of looking at their own kind.
The Miss Germany situation is even worse. Picking a 39-year-old Iranian woman instead of a young beautiful German. I get that they wanted to make pro-immigrant propaganda, but they could've at least picked a young and pretty Turkish, Syrian, or Iranian girl.

Because white people are like that.
Considering every other culture claws it’s way into things in western countries, I don’t see the problem.
👍🏻
Maybe don't have this obsession with somebody's laundry? Is this your business?
It's a private life. You are all yucky

How insulting to all these beautiful Japanese contestants that missed out on the opportunities being a pageant winner gets. Pageant careers are very short and this Ukrainian woman’s scandal wasted a year for the Japanese ladies

If an ethnically African women won miss Denmark or something, how would you react? Similarly?
Do you feel the same way about a man winning miss universe?
I don’t understand how a European born woman who doesn’t have Japanese blood, represent the beauty of a country from a different continent? I agree with the Japanese people here as they have their own unique charms like every other country, but “Miss Japan” has the charm of a EUROPEAN woman. No plastic surgery (or lip injections) can make her look Japanese or even Asian in general.
It woukd be more acceptable if you were born in that country and your family has a long history in that country. For example an African-American woman in the US would still be valid to represent the USA’s beauty as her family has had a long history in that country and she was also born there.
Why should someone's identity be 100% defined by something they can't control?
I hate that she keeps squinting her eyes. She has issues.
It’s a beauty pageant, not a President election. Woman is a citizenship of Japan, thus, she is qualified to take part in the pageant. Duuhhh🙄

No, she didn’t give it up all because of a “tabloid scoop”. She gave it up because she compromised her own integrity by lying that she didn’t know the man she was having an affair with was married. The fact that transgression and her lack of integrity were brought to light was not the cause of her downfall, ultimately her own actions were. Let’s not try to paint her as a victim. Responsibility is also a feature of empowerment. She did it, she owns it.
