Several things....#1. ME, I can be the biggest distraction to the school day, now that my last child is doing more independent work.I have to keep myself quiet & on task. I also have to be firm with myself & not get caught up visiting - inner discipline is a tough thing in this type of life. Especially when you also REALLY value people & want to keep the peace. And my MOTHER. She will stop by at random times in the a.m. KNOWING we are doing school. Often she is using my house as a way station & its hard to deal with this. If I let her stay, or use my facilities it interrupts the day, my daughter slinks off never to return to focus. If I try to wrap it up & move her along, she will act put out & the silent "treatment" can go on & on. And unexpected company. YIKES! In the spring-fall our house can feel like grand central station as it is a farm & we have folks coming & going doing work, partnering with us, etc...Most people understand if I just tell them, "Nope, its school hours. I can't visit today." But it is hard when it is ME who wants to talk. I have never had seasoned teachers be 'cheerleaders' for homeschooling where I live. So consider yourself very lucky. There are often very rude & condescending remarks about how homeschoolers are just parents who can't 'let go' or the district just needs to find a way to 'make them come back to public school, because they are losing $ for our kids', or that 'there is no way parents know what they are doing'. So I ignore all of this. My kids went to public school. I KNOW what its all about. In NY, they spend $14,000 avg a year on students & many of them are not proficient in reading or math. and if my kids are not in their buildings the district doesn't get state aid. I NEVER feel guilty. I offer my kids all sorts of opportunities in a safe & loving environment. My kids have not missed out on anything & say they never want to go back to school. The best way to realize that you are doing a great job is to tutor some public schoolers, look at the standardized test results, and look at the reading material @ grade level. I tutored during covid (incorporating some kids into our homeschool days for several months). The things they did NOT know at their grade level & their lack of enthusiasm for learning was mind boggling. One teacher only required reading for 10 minutes - a DAY! This was for an upper middle schooler. The high schoolers could not tell me basic vocab definitions, didn't know when the Civil War, Great Depression, or WWI occurred (even tho the one assured me that they had just finished learning about WWI & didn't need to sit thru our lesson). these kids quickly admitted that our 'schooling' was way harder for them & had no interest in continuing it. LOL. They had previously thought that what we did was some easy-peasy lounge around in our pjs type work. I look at the reading material for high schoolers & it is NOTHING that I would ever want my kid reading, or discussing with another adult & kids of the other gender. I never feel guilty, I feel vindicated & confident. Just graduated one & she aced cosmetology school, with the teacher telling her she was the most prepared independent learner she had had in a while. She did 4 hours of school every night while working 40 hours a week.

I totally agree with what you said at 5:00 about how watching other mothers can recharge your battery! I often come to your channel for encouragement and a recharge. It's so valuable when it's from a more experienced mother, like Paul said in Timothy (maybe?) about how older women should raise up and mentor the younger women. Your channel really does shine a light into people's hearts

You are speaking to me and my situation right now. As a homeschool mom, it drives me insane when people who know that we homeschool, call during school and expect to have long conversations that aren't really important, mostly small talk.
I have been praying a lot lately and God has really placed Proverbs 31 and Titus 2 on my heart recently. The fact that it keeps popping up everywhere feels like confirmation.
I totally get a house being under construction and trying to keep the house clean with kids and construction. I keep reminding myself, our needs are met and this too shall pass. I am needed by my younger children and there will always be messes somewhere. One day, I will look back and long for the noise and messes when our house is empty.
We also gather the whole family together for science projects. I love that my older ones can help teach the younger ones. A lot of times, they will ask siblings for help and when I offer, they say I've got this mom.

Hello, thank you for your comment! I didn't share it here, but one thing I did to cure the people that wouldn't stop calling during school hours is I put an auto responder on my phone to take calls. It told people school was in session, and that I'd get back to them after school. It also gave the times they could call back that I wouldn't be doing lessons. It worked!

The discipline with schooling is something that I struggle with. With my own health and several kids with special needs I tend to shorted a lot. I always look back and know that if I would do better with planning more. I find it hard to plan the way I want to. I stand in my own way with this! It is my job and I would take the time if I were out of the home. This is something that I see in myself and know I have to work really hard to protect that planning time. Thanks for talking about it and sharing your own struggles.
Wondering how long of a break do you take for lunch? Is it predicable? I have thought about setting a timer for hour and that would making lunch, eating, and cleaning up. Our lunch time isn't predictable and I know it would really help.

    • @mountainhomesteadfamily
      @mountainhomesteadfamily  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hello Alesha! So I didn't share it in this video, I did in last years, but we use an Alexa for reminders! Since we've been doing this awhile the kids are used to the routine, however it took awhile. It probably took 6 months or more!
Every time we get off the normal schedule it takes a bit of effort to get back on too. I've spoken with teachers about this, and they have noticed the same thing as I, it seems to take almost as long as the break was to get the kids back into and used to the routine sometimes. If the routine remains the same with very little changes though it's easier to get back into.
I put a lot of thought and prayer into our routines, and they consistently do need adjustments especially with the seasons, so there's a degree of flexibility, but having checklists helps very much, especially if there is an adjustment.
Finding a good routine for the family though is a POWERHOUSE! It's amazing what can be accomplished, especially in school, once the routine is down!
Yes, lunch is pretty predictable, almost always at noon. The kids may need to be reminded to start their school, chores etc....but snack and lunch time, lol? Nope, they are on the ball with those times, hehe! The Alexa makes an announcement to start lunch at 11:40 so that helps to keep it structured.
Before Alexa, I used my phone. It wasn't as effective but it helped some.
I'm sure you are doing better than you realize though, Alesha. And God has a way of filling in for our weakness too, especially when we have answered His callings.

(This is JusticePirate with a new username) Wow so much snow! It is good that you have chores for your kids to do things.
I liked seeing the supplements you take. So many!!! Ahh.
I enjoyed seeing your kids doing their schoolwork. I wish that I homeschooled my two oldest for high school rather than deciding to put them into public school for high school :: sigh :: but they like going and we have lots of conversations about what they are learning.
Why would we judge you about the clothes your kids wear? If they were filled with holes and dirt, we might question it. They seem fine.
I am glad you are someone who goes to therapy and is not afraid to share that you go. That is really cool.
    candy rewards Mmm!!
"I don't know what you mean." Kids don't understand that saying and writing helps them learn things better. Hopefully in time your son will understand.
I used so many of the books shown or mentioned in this video for when I homeschooled my kids. I can't wait to start again in a few years.
I feel a lot of homeschooliing moms teach way more thoroughly than a lot of professional teachers, honestly. It is nice you go to some teachers to see about that. I think for myself, it helps that I retained all the things I learned in school with my photographic memory.
The room your husband was painting, personally, I would make it a lighter color because there is not a lot of window light in that room, so it will open the room better to keep it light, while rooms that have lots of light can work with darker colors. Just something I have learned from one of my friends who is a designer. I had that same green color in my bedroom for a few years (now it is white with green accents). I love that green!
Unfolded clothes gives me stress just looking at it. Ahh!
I hope things work out with your chickens and meat birds.
Have a great rest of your week!

Awe, thank you for telling me! One of the reasons I started my channel and blog was because I saw a lack of people sharing practical solutions to the problems we all face in this journey. What you said about it all being a blur.....that is what happens once we are out of a phase of life, and I saw a need for people in the phases, actively sharing solutions and encouragement. Thank you for sharing this, Nancy!

I just wanted to say that your videos are so very encouraging. I appreciated your word at the end about waiting…and not feeling abandoned by the Lord. It can be so hard to wait, but if we embrace the season that we’re in, it can bring a lot of growth, too. Thriving, not just surviving. That’s been a theme for me this year.

We just faced the school board which was horrible. I'm considering home school as dealing with the school is very stressful for us all, but I'm so scared of failing him and not being able to help him learn, he's not up to level for his age and has a very short attention span and gets angry when he doesn't understand, do you have any advice, I have been praying but I don't know what to do😒
