Sorry, we have had Cockers for 30yrs and they can be lazy turds. They love the outdoors, but are just as happy laying on the couch all day sleeping. They will be happy in any environment with any person that will have them. We have had males, females, English, American, white, black, and mixed Cockers.

I love this. I’m an ultramarathon runner with a cocker and people are always so surprised he does all my training with me. We built up safely (he’s almost 5 now) but he can very happily run 50km with me on the flat, or 10-12 hours in the mountains. Sniffing and doing “side missions” the whole time! ❤

@@lindaj6655 Hello friend! I started when he was about 6 months old, with guidance from his vet - to start with I only ever took him off leash and on soft trails so he could go at his own pace, stop and sniff, and it was easy on his feet. Up until a year old I only ever took him every second day, but now he's five he comes with me on every single run. He's a working cocker and so definitely sees running as his "job". If I stop when I'm out on a run to take a photo or walk a steep part he barks at me!!!

I have owned 3 cockers and they are a wonderful breed and this video is spot on. They love and need exercise, very smart, loyal, friendly and love discipline so plan to train them a lot and absolutely need to keep up with the grooming/brushing that is the only negative I would say. So many people often say look at the puppies even when they are like 8 years old.

I've had a Cocker, as it was trained to be a support companion. This animal's ability to sense when something isn't right, is absolutely phenomenal -- they are almost perfectly in tune with their owners emotional status and can often pick up on anxiety attacks before you even register that you're having one. I just buried my best friend (Roxy, My Cocker) and let me tell you, I've never had a better breed of animal. The prices on buying one these days in Canada is absolutely staggering now, $800+ for one ... That's a bit steep for someone on Disability and Veteran's Affairs. But if I ever had the opportunity to, I'd have another one in a heartbeat. This dog perfectly emulated everything about me. It was energetic when I was, it was lazy when I was. It knew when to comfort me, and it knew when to give me space.
100% would own again. But it's a shame that breeders ask so much for an animal.

@@DavoBlairo I've looked at breeders all over Canada. CKC registered dogs don't usually exceed $1,200 for the breed. Even when you google the averages prices, it comes up with this.
On average, you can expect to pay between $500 to $2,500 for a Cocker Spaniel puppy. However, some breeders may charge higher prices for puppies with exceptional pedigrees or for show-quality dogs.

I've had 7 cockers, and fostered a couple dozen more through a group here in Texas (USA). Most of them were American Cockers, though a few were the English variety - one of whom bit my husband 5 times in 2 days. They can be unpredictable! One of ours had a VERY high prey drive and birds just drove him nutty in the yard. We have 3 now: my eldest is 9, has lost an eye to glaucoma and had surgery to replace her lens in her remaining eye; she went to the doc today and has increased pressure though she's on 4 eye meds; she also has severe allergies and we hand-make all her food. But she's a wonderful girl and we'd do anything to keep her happy and healthy. ... Our middle boy is a mix of a cocker to a chihuahua/shih tzu; he has all the cocker looks though he's quite short and has a very growly disposition. He loves us. End of line. ... Our youngest is a breeder surrender because they really screwed up and created a Double Merle boy. He's gorgeous and lucky - has most of his sight and hearing intact! He's almost pure white, with one grey ear and a smudge of grey on his behind like he sat in some paint; he's super smart, and still a young boy so he's SUPER energetic and playful. We love them all and wouldn't have them any other way.

Have always had cockers and just got my newest he is 10 weeks, blue roans only in this household. Love the breed with all their quirks. My little treasure has just discovered toes and feet and I have the scratches, teeth marks and bruises to show for it. I love their coats and a previous cocker I showed and absolutely loved him in full show coat which he had all his 14 beautiful years. Can't wait for all his vaccinations to be done so he can get back socialising and start puppy school which I believe is a must for all cocker owners, if you can't recall a cocker you have big problems. I would love to ultimately to get him into agility training but that's after all his basic and intermediate training is complete. Love your channel and I'm glad I found it a few months back.

I rescued a cocker and he is mostly clean, his grooming doesn't take hours daily, if your routine is daily walks and visits to the park without getting into mud or hunting. Mine never hunted. He needs to play and run, but he also loves his chill time. The challenge at times is his high territorial behavior, but it gets better when I keep making him feel safe and secure. He can secretly taunt other dogs and he does not like to share me or anything. Took a year working on this. I love him so much!

I never let him hang his head out the window because of all the bacteria that could hurt. I also had his bowls lifted and spread out to limit his ears getting into his bowls. I also cleaned his eyes and ears every week.weekly maintenance goes along way. Also lots of love!!! Nose kisses and belly rubs

Our Scooter was known for doing "Scooter laps" which was simply running in big circles in our back yard. Indeed, once in Seaside, Oregon, Scooter was released from his lease simply took off across the sand like a rocket. I was afraid that he was running away . . . Nope; he was just blowing out the carbon from his engine. Yes, they love the feel of the wind in their hair. Prey dogs? Scooter loved every living thing. He saw me kill a gopher one day and wouldn't go near me the rest of the day. He loved our cats, our grand kids, everybody. He lived for only 17 years and we miss him greatly. He was a blond/brown English Cocker.

We have a 5 month old Working Cocker called Snoopy. He is a service dog in training for my 2 children who are disabled. He’s an amazing, sweet, clever dog. He needs a 45min-1 hour walk or train and play session a day and I also take him on a quick walk on an evening. He’s fairly chilled 99% of the time, is super friendly and affectionate. He so far has a low prey drive when off lead but when he’s picked up in a scent when on lead, he will hunt that smell down until he’s pulled away (so great for scent training!). As for grooming, be careful when grooming paws as they have webbing between their toes so careful where you cut! Snoopy has a good old scrub in the bath once a week, daily light clean downs, teeth brushed every day and he’s good to go.
Best choice of dog I’ve ever made!

She is great on the lead and her recall is excellent. The one big issue is that I have a cat and Jess has gone for her three times this past week and it took all my strenght to hold her back. I am now in a desperate situation as I have had my cat a few years and she is not going anywhere, but can these two live together. At the moment, I am keeping them in separate rooms but this does not work very well in a one bedroom ground floor masonette. I just dont know what to do, I am that stressed out as I feel Jess may attack my cat.

How would you recommend dealing with a working cocker spaniel that runs off through the woods and only comes back when they are done with whatever they were chasing/flushing? Especially if these woods aren’t too far away from roads or fields with livestock?
Our cocker loves walks and fetch, but as soon as we get to any woods or a hedgerow where she can smell whatever wildlife is in there, she ignores recall and puts herself in danger!
We’ve resided to limiting walks to fetch on the open fields or on leash on longer walks through woods or where she may be able to get under fences etc.

Cocker spaniels that get a lot of time pleasing themselves learn more and more just to do that. Nothing you offer them can compare to the thrill they get chasing a pheasant. ‘A year on the leash for a lifetime off the leash’ I learned that far too late. My spaniel, like yours, became self employed and entirely self serving. If you cannot get your dog back you cannot let them off. It’s awful because they need so much exercise. Before your dog has too much time free ranging go and see a trainer who specialises in spaniels to help you. They need to know that they are allowed the thrill but only when it comes via you. If recall is optional there is no recall.

I’m thinking about getting a cocker spaniel, I’m use to active dogs as I’ve had a border collie and a Labrador but I’m told spaniels are very vocal, is this true?

Depends on the dog I think. The three spaniels I’ve had before were only vocal when they saw cats outside 😂

Anyone that owns one of these dogs knows all that, We have had five of these dogs and they are great pets, we had one in particular that went for walks for 2 days or more and I can assure you she covered a lot more the 40 miles so I really do not know why you would be surprised at the distance that these dogs can cover, Just to add to that we where living on a large 90,000-acre farm at the time or I guess large by your standards but average by ours here in Australia at the time.👍👍👍

Google says just over an hour a day with them, youtube video says 20 mins in morning and 20 mins in afternoon ,I knew they could go for miles on end 😅,it's a shame when my brothers cocker who is a year and a half is always at work, this female dog is so energetic and I take it in the garden alot and an hour or more walk here and there. Trying to get it to walk beside me on a lead. However they do prefer being off the lead.

Would they be happy as trucking dogs? I’m a long haul trucker in the US, considering getting a cavalier King Charles or cocker for a companion. I stop every 2-3hrs for a 15-30min walk/stretch during the day and walk about an hour in the evening. Is that enough for a spaniel?

I am well familiar with both the Cocker and the Cavalier. First off being that you are based in the US I am going to guess you are likely considering an American Cocker Spaniel. While the American Cocker Spaniel and the English Cocker Spaniel have the same origins they are recognized as two different breeds and as such do have different needs and traits. For instance the English Cocker, which this video seems to be mostly speaking of, is still largely a working breed, where as the American Cocker was bred for both companionship as well as a working dog. As a result the American Cocker tends to have lower energy needs and prey drive then the English Cocker. However they do still have moderate-high energy needs, especially when young, and benefit from having at least a couple walks a day. My Cocker doesn't take enjoy running all that much but would rather slow down down and take the time to smell and explore everything possible during her walks. She also tires more from mental stimulation than she does from physical exercise.
As I mentioned I am also familiar with Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as my parents have had several. The Cavalier has been soley bred for companionship and therefore is noticeably less energetic than the Cocker. They are willing to get out and walk, run, etc alongside their owner but are also happy to lay back, relax, and do nothing. We thought for quite awhile about getting a Cavalier when we got our most recent puppy but what largely held us back was the many health problems the breed is plagued with, particularly mitral valve heart disease and syringomyelia. So if you do decide to go with a Cavalier be sure you go with a reputable breeder that health tests the parents. While that is no guarentee a puppy won't develop these problems, especially with syringomyelia, it does lessen the chance. Sorry for the long answer but I hope that helps out some.

This video is at least 50% rubbish! Spaniels are wonderful dogs, you make it sound like they are un trainable nightmares. If you exercise a young spaniel too much it builds their capacity. You need to focus on mental games when they are young in order to get a calm dog. you can then ramp up the exercise once older. If anyone is put off by this video, ignore it. Speak to a spaniel expert.

    • @mamauk1
      @mamauk1 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

But that’s the exact problem! Regular families with zero training knowledge don’t know this. They feel they must simply walk and walk and walk their dog more than ever in the hope of tiring it out. They have no clue what mental training to do with a spaniel and the only exercise they know is a ‘walk’. So it’s exactly why they should t have a spaniel.

I really fell in love with the Cocker Spaniel breed and am trying to figure out wether I could give one a good life. The crazy energy levels that people claim Spaniels have, have intimidated me a lot. I want to provide my future dog with enough walks, time outdoors and mental exercise but I do live in an Appartement in the City and am a university student (study from home a lot). I am currently taking a semester off and think that now would be the best time because I can put all my attention on a puppy. To care for a dog has been a dream of mine for a long time and I am aware of the responsibility, that’s why I want to make the best decision for a potential future dog and myself. Given what I told you about my life, do you think it would be a good idea for me to get a cocker spaniel right now?
I am trying to make the best decision, that’s why I am trying to get as many opinions as possible and you seem to know the breed very well :)
